CentOS 5 Networking :: IP Address Conflict Log?
Dec 4, 2009
I was particulary suprised to have nothing in my logs regarding an IP address conflict in Linux compared to the windows and its popup !Did I miss something in the logs ? Or is there someting to configure to have it ?Otherwise can I do something to have the date in the dmesg log file ?Here my story about this problem :My linux machine was monitored by Nagios so i've seen some Up/down/up/down phenomene when I came to work this morning. I tried to figured out what's wrong browsing the logs (messages & dmesg & mail/root)... but nothing usefull so far...Then I hearded that a collegue booted a old Windows machine the day before. I checked this machine and there was the classic windows popup regarding a IP address conflict! So that was the problem, the Windows machine have the same IP than de Linux box.I was particulary suprised to have nothing in my logs regarding an IP address conflict in Linux compared to the windows and its popup !Did I miss something in the logs ? Or is there someting to configure to have it ?Otherwise can I do something to have the date in the dmesg log file ?Linux : CentOS 5.4 64bitsWindows : Windows server 2003 32 bits

I am running fedora12 in my machine and used virtualbox. I have 3 virtual machine running linux, xp and fedora as well. I have used linux as my gateway and configured NAT for my xp and fedora machine which is under the ip of 192.168.1.0 network.. Everything is fine but often i get error message in my xp machine that says 'there is an ip address conflict'.I just wonder there are only 2 machine on that network and how can there be a ip conflict(i have used a static ip for xp and fedora virtual machine).My ip address for linux is (192.168.5.x and 192.168.1.101). XP (192.168.1.1). Fedora (192.168.1.50).

I am running an application that requires use of my /etc/hosts file. In it, I have my machine name and its LAN ip address. The program creates a service on a specific port, then attempts to connect to it based on the host name. So my hosts file has to be correct.I added the nameservers to resolv.conf and now my application will not run. My guess is that the computer is checking the name servers first, timing out then checking the hosts file.Is there a way I can tell the system to check the hosts file first, then DNS. I thought it should behave that way by default, but it does not appear to.

I am having a problem getting a wireless network connection on my DELL laptop running CentOS 5. I have no problem getting a wireless connection when the laptop is booted in Windows XP. I also don't have a problem when booted under CentOS 5 and there is no authentication setup on the wireless router. I only have a problem when I setup authentication. The router wireless log shows the PC connectinng, authenticating, and succeeding authentication.I am using the Broadcom Hybrid-wl wireless driver.

I am a developer, not a network admin - sorry if this ia dumb question. I need to test an application on CentOS 55 64 bit. The instalation went fine and initially I let DHCP work its magic. The router IP address ia 192.168.0.1 and all other VM's I have are granted dynamic ip address on this range (i.e. 192.168.0.x). However, the CentOS vm got an IP address that looks like it belongs on a different subnet :192.168.1.1
The VM (vmware desktop) network setting for this VM uses "Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network". I can ping the host (Windows 7 64 bit) and the host can ping it (it been the VM) - but no other computer on the network can see it. To make things easier, I changed the network configuration to use a static IP address. Here are my configuration files:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
HWADDR=00:0C:29:83:4B:A4
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=Ethernet

I have a requirement of switch between wireless network with a single wireless device. First it should be switched to adhoc mode and then after sometime switch to infrastructure mode to establish internet connection. Everything works fine except the gateway settings.
I have used:
system("route add default gw x.x.x.x dev wlan0") to set the gateway, where x.x.x.x is gatewayip address.
I have used this whenever switching happens in addition to ifconfig command to set the ip address and netmask. But this is not setting the gateway ip address. How to set gateway IP address?
System details below
OS :CentoS 5.3
Kernel :2.6.18

With virtualbox I do a test session to train myself with centos before I make big mistakes on my production server.I did take a harddiskfile vdi to another computer with virtual box. Now I have the problem that de MAC-address is changed.I can not get the mac adres anymore, becaus those computer is sold. How can i change the trust of the MAC-address in centos? Or must i change de MAC-address? If I may change the MAC-address, i must do that inside centos, end not inside virtualbox, if you understand me?

The install went fine but the only issues is getting the server on the network.
I can't ping any thing other that the ip address assigned to the server.
I did it through the gui , the command line and using ifconfig and editing the ifconfi-eth0 file and nothing works.
any ideas on how to get this to work.
i see nothing wrong in the messages.log file either.

Running CentOS 5.3
Recently installed - manually, not with yum, the rpm distribution of the latest MySql (5.1.34) as I needed the latest version, not the one that YUM lists. I am now trying to set up (for the first time) an email server on the same system, and I have been led to believe that postfix and dovecot are the way to go. I have a VPS (Mosso Cloud Server) that is administered and monitored by Platinum Server Mgmt. I have CentOS 5 and Apache 2.2 installed. I requested that my Document Root be set to /var/[URL] and also a subdomain setup to /var/[URL]. They responded by telling me that it would, "[This would] cause a problem with the permissions and that it will be a permissions conflict if you set them to /var/www/. For security and compatibility purposes, they should be in /home/username/.... It can be put anywhere in there." This is the first time I've been involved with any server administration, but while coding on numerous private vps's before, they had a setup similar to what I was requesting. Am I incorrect in my understanding of the previous situations and the Mgmt company is in fact correct?

Basically I have a triple boot setup on a mac pro tower. Windows /osx /centos 5.3 everything was great until I tried setting up my Wacom. I did get it setup but in the process revealed a problem I was having that I didn't notice until this point. Mind you my system boots perfectly everything runs perfectly except I believe my DVDrom and rear usb ports are trying to share the same IRQ and from what it looks like they don't want to play nice with each other. Eventually CentOS kills the IRQ thus killing both devices. Everything works fine on the windows and mac osx side. I have tried unplugging and replugging the DVDROM, I wanted to try another ide channel but the motherboard only has one. I have changed the device from auto to master to slave. When the DVDROM is removed i have no IRQ errors in my dmesg. I forgot to add that adding IRQpoll to my grub boot pretty much destroys the system.... hard lock within 20 seconds of loging in. In CentOS, is there anyway that I can force the DVDROM to it's own IRQ?

I am attempting to get this network card running under CentOS 5.2 but have had no luck. Some sites say to use the sk98lin driver, others the skge, which I can't find at all. I have tried multiple versions of the driver in rpm but none seem to work. The card shows under the network manager but will not get an IP address from the DHCP server.
Here are the outputs for this card.

Edit eth0 (eth0) - vmxnet3 -> with a static IP I rebooted my server and since then I lost my eth0. I still see it in system-config-network, but I can't active it anymore.:
/etc/init.d/network start Bringing up interface eth0: Device eth0 has different MAC address than expected, ignoring. [FAILED]

Everything worked fine until very recently, and without apparently ANY change to the settings on the server, a secondary IP that was assigned to my server won't work anymore..Any IP attached to the same server works fine.. So in my case, the problematic IP is 213.8.155.67. The other IP (213.8.155.42) works without any problem.How would I go about troubleshooting this?

New CentOS 5.4 system working fine. Sys admins came in and copied the hosts file from one of the servers down to my desktop and ever sincethen machine has been slow (progs take 10-20seconds to load). RunningGnome. Luckily I saved the old hosts file and copied it back and all is now well. But I'd like to understand why, particularly as I will need to change myhostname in the future.
As configured:
/etc/hosts (yes my hostname is "dummyName" that I will need to change later)
127.0.0.1 dummyName localhost.localdomain localhost

I've used ssh for a long time, but recently I set up a new server on my LAN. Often when I try to connect to it I get a message like so:
Code:
Warning: the ECDSA host key for '<snip>' differs from the key for the IP address '<snip>' Offending key for IP in /home/<snip>/.ssh/known_hosts:14 Matching host key in /home/<snip>/.ssh/known_hosts:12 Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? What is weird is that, in the known_hosts file, the entry for the ip address (line 14) is a "ssh-rsa" type, but the entry for the hostname is a "ecdsa-sha2-nistp256", even though they both connect to the same server. What is going on here?

What happen if we assign a static IP address to both linux and windows host?Consider host A is a ubuntu machine and host B is a windows machine. I first set a static IP for host A (W.X.Y.Z) and connect to it through ssh. Then I duplicate that IP for host B (W.X.Y.Z).The result was that I could no longer connect to the ubuntu machine!
