I have installed Ubuntu 8 within window 7. But when system starts, it does not promote for OS selection. By Pressing F12 on booting, i came to OS selection, but windows 7 is only listed, not ubuntu. As per my friend help, i checked msconfig-->boot, but it also list windows 7 only. The same ubuntu i have installed earlier within windows Xp. but in windows 7 it produce issue like this.
View 5 Repliesi have a pc having OS Windows XP and Windows 7 installed (hd0,0 and hd0,1). Yesterday i installed Debian 6(hd0,5). But it doesn't show boot menu on startup. It automatically load GRUB and start loading Debian. While i m on GNOME or KDE i can see all the files of windows XP n 7. Is any way to rescue and boot with Windows???
And yah one more thing ... i also dont have menu.lst file in /boot/grub/.
I'm reinstalling an ubuntu machine that does not boot anymore. I have a complete backup of all the files that were on the harddrive.
I would like to make a list of all the programs that were installed, so I can re-install them on the fresh install.
I've found the following procedure, but this method requires that the machine still boots. (and my machine does not boot anymore) code...

I had a problem with my grub (system displayed "unknown filesystem" and then the grub rescue prompt). I then used a livecd of ubuntu 9.04 and ran fsck for a while (closed it in the middle). Grub then worked. But when i select ubuntu 10.04 it goes to the purple screen and stops there. There's some error before loading the purple screen.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was recording a DVD when I wanted to look at a folder to see if there was a file there. I went to "places", as I always do, and a window poped up asking for a password. This has never happened before. I entered the password and went to the folder. I always view folders as "list", then they displayed as "icons". I finished the recording and re-started. It still appears the same, and when I open programs I notice little differences in the way things look and feel. The reason I was recording DVD's was to get some of the movies off my hard drive. It was down to 81Gbs free, It now says there is 365 Gbs free. I have searched everything and I see nothing missing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently (today) installed Debian on a logical partition of my master hard disk, but when booting it will just list Debian or Debian recovery not listing windows at all. I know there may be some that will think that is a good thing but I do need access to windows.
I had a root about and found this thread which I thought might solve the problem as it is similar:

But when I got to the part where I entered the command su -c "nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg" the terminal prompt changed to a > and I felt a little unsure of what I was doing as I would have prefered to have opened the grub.cfg file as a text file, as it is I recieved a syntax error.
As you can probably tell Linux to me appears to be a bit of a black art, but I am enthusiastic none the less. I will list the output of the terminal window so that you may see the steps I have taken.

I tried to change the basic toolbar to cairo dock,a tutorial that i found told me to write in terminal gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.listso i write it and a window opened,i couled not find the text that told me(the tutorial i mean)so i closed the window,after that i keep taiking the same error

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 but while completing installation at the point when we remove installation CD from drive and go to press enter to restart the system, I saw this error:[2993.693601] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 537844 like this line there were so many line displayed the I pressed enter the PC got restarted and now Ubuntu running as nothing happened. But I couldn't understand what was that error and how much serious it was.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
i upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04 today .but after upgrading so many errors crept in .

1. Original login screen of ubuntu 9.10 is not being displayed.
2.By mistake i removed volume control and network connection applet from upper pannel.so can any one tell me how to re organise the pannel...and get back those two applets or can any one tell me how to completely recover the upper pannel.
Got Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 installed.. I've been using Fedora 13 64bit for some time now dual boot with WinXP.. Ubuntu installation to a free Hard drive went well till i rebooted, my Fedora installation was gone , and i thought Ubuntu is much installer friendly than fedora.

Initially when I upgraded to Lucid I uninstalled openJDK and switched back to sun-java5 packages due to some application support limitations. Now I have to upgrade to sun-java6- packages. I removed the sun-java5 packages and installed the sun-java6 packages. Including the sun-java6-plugin.
I can see the plugin in aboutlugins in Firefox 3.6.10 however nothing (like webex or applets) related to java works. As a workaround I have used the Icedtea plugin which comes with open JDK and that seems to work. However I want to get the sun-java6-plugin working.

I have a fresh install of COS5.6 installed a test laptop. I have following instructions to set up the PXE server based on the following: http:[url]......The base PXE installation seems to work fine (The menu labeled CentOS 5.6 works fine ). The whole purpose of this was to be able to boot iso's like Hirens and Imaging software ISO's.The issue is that whenever i try to pick an iso from the list it just says "Could not find ramdisk image:" [path to iso][path to iso] being either of the two iso i had set up to test this.

I have a limited experice with linux in an enterprise environment and looking for any direction as to what to do about this.
After seeral attempts to load Ubuntu 10.19,I ourchased anew dis in case downloaded one was faulty.I load the disc in and it starts loading.I then get sveral "gnome"errors displayed.I clck to "not delete"and it then contiinues to loadI get a sreen up to select "language",eventually I get the "forward" which I click.It then appears to start loading.However it is still in this state seven hours later.
I have noticed that prior to start loading the title says "Debian 4.1" is this correct or is this in my PC.Should I be using another disc to wipe this out???? is this the unrecoverable error?

My boot loader was overwritten by windows 7. so I inserted the boot cd and repaired the boot using YAST. now I am able to login to suse but when I select windows it says bootmgr missing. When I do a phpinfo(), no where are the settings for pear (meaning where it's located). If I recalled there is supposed to be a setting displayed there for PEAR.
