My boot loader was overwritten by windows 7. so I inserted the boot cd and repaired the boot using YAST. now I am able to login to suse but when I select windows it says bootmgr missing. I read thru some of the board and added the following lines to menu.1st:

I am trying to Dual-boot Windows & and OpenSUSE 11.4, and have run into walls all over the place. Here is what I did:
1. Windows 7 was already installed. (Don't like it, freezes all the time)
2. Installed OpenSUSE using default partition options.
3. Booted into OpenSUSE with no problem
4. Tried booting into Windows, no joy.
5. Got that figured out, now I can get into Windows.
6. GRUB is gone, so now I can't get back into OpenSUSE.
I added an entry to grub's menu.lst and reran grub (grub-install hd0) and now my background is gone and the entries just show up like on a normal console.
I searched the forums and I couldn't find anything. Does anybody know why this happened and how to fix it?
I have not changed anything in menu.lst except for adding the new OS.
I had dual boot PC (openSuse 11.3 / Windows XP). Then I had to reinstall Windows XP, so I lost dual boot capability. (No Grub boot options screen, directly Windows boot.)How can I reinstall Grub (only Grub)?I tried by booting with the openSuse installation DVD, but no repair option appears as in older versions.

View 7 Replies View RelatedNow I installed Opensuse on my system which already had Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 on it. Whilst Opensuse's replacement Grub correctly identified Windows as an alternative system it did not do the same for Ubuntu. I've been tinkering around in menu.lst (after taking back ups) and I can't ever get Ubuntu running - I either get a Grub error 15 (file not found) or error 17 (unable to read partition). By booting on a live CD I can see that all the information is still there, I just can't for the life of me figure out how to get to it from Grub! Did Opensuse move the partitions around during install?

I was bored with windows 7 and wanted to learn another operating system. I made a boot cd with openSuSE gnome. On the internal hard drive is my windows 7 boot system that i do not want to touch, and on the external 1tb hard drive, i'd like to partition 50 GB for openSuSE. If this is not possible i have another method, but i'd rather not use it (which is use my secondary 80 GiB hdd). I used to dual boot openSuse and XP but I yanked out my linux HDD and now my Windows will not boot, I get a GRUB error 22 (missing partition).This PC does not have a CDrom so I can not simply use the fixmbr from an XP recovery console.I have booted into opensuse Live CD (Flash Drive) and tried to use Yast but it gives me an error it can not write because of the partitioning. I also tried the recover shell but am totally lost trying to re-write GRUB because I can not find the menu.lst file.
View 5 Replies View RelatedBefore installing OpenSUSE I shrunk my Win 7 partition down in half, then created 3 partitions out of the new free space for /root, /home and /swap. I installed opensuse and when it got to the bootloader section I kept getting Grub error 17 - cannot mount selected partition, and so on. I made sure it was writing to the MBR and also into /boot if that makes a difference, but I did get a prompt that said YaST couldn't make changes to /dev/sda (I'm paraphrasing and can't remember the exact error message). At the moment I have suse installed and my windows partition intact, but no bootloader (not even windows one) so all I can do is boot to Live CD.
Below is the output of fdisk -l. There's quite a few more partitions than it's showing, sda3, sda4 and sda5 are my /home, /root, /swap and the other ones are windows partitions, like the system recovery along with the win7 install. During the suse install I formatted the home and root partitions with ext4 filesystem.

View 8 Replies View RelatedThis is a problem when Windows is running some malware that cannot be removed, which happens all the time. The problem is all the new hardware or specialized hardware will not work on Linux so Windows is the only choice. I would think the latest versions of Linux would have this problem worked out by now. I installed 11.3 one week ago, only to find that the repair option in the install menu no longer exists so don't bother uses this link to reload the GRUB HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive. I also tried this link Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic which does not work either. On step 2 typing grub returns the error message "grub command not found". You can use GRUB if you boot the install DVD and select Rescue Boot. However when you type find /boot/grub/menu.lst the error message "file not found" is returned.
I did the following to restore my GRUB boot record. Boot the install DVD and select the update option during installation. Change all the repositories to enable except the NVIDIA repository, it is not responding at this time. When the system comes up go into Yast and open the boot loader. It should have your original boot menu in memory. Change the default to another option and re-write the MBR. This will write a new MBR using the original data updated with your new default. Re-boot and then change your default back. I am just a NewBe so this may not be exactly correct but I hope it saves someone like me some time fixing a MBR re-writing by the Windows installer.

I have installed SUSE 11.3 and I am using KDE4. I also installed the font "misc-console".
After installing the NVIDIA driver 256.53 the font misc-console becomes useless because it is displayed so much slanted that it is imposible to read. However, if I disable the NVIDIA driver (by replacing "nvidia" with "nv" in xorg.conf), then it works fine. It also works fine in KDE3 and the NVIDIA driver. So, it seems to be a combination between NVIDIA and KDE4. A lot other fonts are also overly slanted and unreadable (like "Sony fixed", "misc fixed", etc.).
If I launch konsole from a terminal, I receive the following warning:
konsole(6928) Konsole::TerminalDisplay::setVTFont: Using an unsupported variable-width font in the terminal. This may produce display errors.
Is there a way that I can use "misc-console" without having to uninstall the NVIDIA driver? I'm just used to this font for my terminal.
The same happens whether I install the driver manually or through YAST, 32 or 64 bit. The video card is NVIDIA 8400GS, the system Athlon 64 4400+
I recently installed KDE (I was using GNOME). After that, I found for gnome applications, KDE font settings is applied even when I log in using GNOME. Whatever I do in appearance-fonts, all gnome applications follow the settings from KDE Personal Settings. (Application Appearance -> Fonts)
I lost all the subpixel hinting, and I finally just found out that if I set it in KDE Personal Settings it actually affects gnome applications. (I'm in GNOME now)
I have installed Windows Server 2003 after CentOS. Then GRUB boot loader lost. Is there a way I can install GRUB boot loader from Windows?

On this laptop, I had already installed ubuntu but decided I no longer liked ubuntu very much, but for no real reason. I encountered almost the exact same problem using both ubuntu and kubuntu, but I had more problems on top of the graphical problem - so I decided to give openSuse a try. I love it so far!Anyway, to the point - I have an Nvidia GeForce GT330M. I have tried installing the drivers the "easy way" and the "hard way" and I have even used the script lnvhw, all to no avail.
What seems to happen is that, after I install the drivers (from runlevel 3, of course), as soon as I restart my computer it initially loads just fine. However, after the loading bar shows up, I get dropped into a console login (tty1), and tty7 & 8 show absolutely nothing, except a blinking cursor.I have two graphic cards in my computer -- an Intel HD card. This is loaded normally and, from "My Computer" it is the graphics card in use, as far as I can tell. The other, as I said, is the nVidia GeForce GT 330M. I'm not much of a "power" user, so I'm not really sure where to start with finding the issue
I was getting ubuntu grub menu, and i was able to login to windows xp, windows server 2008 and ubuntu 10.10. Recently there was some problem with windows server 2008 and i had to reinstall it, once i did that i lost my grub menu. now i am getting plain windows menu with option of login into windows xp and windows 2008. So how can i restore the grub menu, so that i can login into all the three os from one point.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.

I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?
When trying to install 11.2 from DVD, the user information I entered at the beginning of the install gets lost. I get to the Automatic Configuration step at the end of the install where the computer needs to reboot, and it asks for my user ID and password (it shouldn't do that). It won't accept the user I created (always says login failed), but it will accept root. That really doesn't matter, because the Automatic Configuration step has done anything, and I have a busted install. I've tried the install 4 or 5 times, but it is always the same problem. I eventually reinstalled 11.1 without any problem (though I did have to click Use Entire Disk on the partition section so it would delete the ext4 partitions created by the 11.2 install and create ext3 partitions).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't get my usual gui now. I had videocard problems which I was attempting to solve by uninstalling the proprietary ATI driver. While doing this the card failed completely and I had nothing on the screen at all. So I had to shut it down by killing the power. I now have a new video card in the machine but I've lost KDE. I'm not sure how it happened but when I tried to log in I was presented with the login screen one usually gets when you choose to log out of your account after a normal boot up using, in my case, KDE.
Logging in normally in that screen as my usual user didn't work. It simply went back to the login screen after a few seconds. But this screen also gives you various options to log in that aren't KDE and I chose one of those. I don't remember which. It sort of worked. I get a small cli window in the upper left corner of the screen. However, I can start programs from there, including Firefox, which I'm using to post this. I have the gui within those programs. How do I get my usual KDE gui back? I'm using 11.3 and an ati 4350 card.
I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.
If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

I have a used PC that came pre-installed with suse 11.2.Unfortunately, I do not have the install disk to use in case of whatever.I already know that when configuring a dual boot with Windows and Linux, it is recommended to install Windows first.I do not have that luxury now as 11.2 is installed and GRUB is the boot loader.Question is, if I boot the Windows 98 install disk on boot, how to not mess up GRUB and still add Windows 98 to GRUB menu?
One hard drive only here. 98gb free.It seems that W98 install will overwrite GRUB in this situation - causing problems. Maybe not, I don't really know for sure.I just need to install windows 98 on the same hard drive and if possible, have suse and w98 visible on boot in GRUB.
I have installed 11.2 next to my 11.1 version I have a few big problems with 11.2 and I like to completely remove it. there are 2 grub's active now. I want to remove the 11.2 grub and make the 11.1 grub master again, but I do not know where to change this, the MBR points to the 11.2 grub and changing menu.lst probably does not have any effect.

I found out that by putting the pendrive into my sat receiver recorder with Ext3 mad the machine go crazy and I have had to sort that out before this! To say my wife was mad as hell is an understatement, but this was what I was told to do on AVForum.But now this leaves me in a predicament. I have no OpenSues booting. It goes through all the loading and then it asks me for the password with all the script showing and not the desktop. It says repair boot after this. Is there a simple way to resolve it? I think it was looking for the pendrive. Well I had to reformat that back to FAT.

If i try to make a bootdisk via mkbootdisk --iso --device/tmp/bootdisk.$(uname -r).iso $(uname -r) under Fedora 12 i get a kernel panic if i try to start from this disc:Kernel panic: not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)PID: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 #1Call Trace: then there a some hex values and the message that i should choose a proper root partition. if i start with options linux root=correct_bootpartition i get the same kernel panic with the same message.I found out that it must have something to do with the kernel*.img file. In earlier versions the of fedora it has been copied to the iso image. That's not done anymore.Iso size F11: ~ 8.8mb; Iso size F12: ~3.4MB
