I have configure few folders access by 3 users, In common folder only users that create that document can do changes. The rest of the users can only read the file but can not do changes. Ownership of the folder is admin, group is sambashare which already have the access create and delete files. All the 3 users already in sambashare main group, and they only can edit the file that they copy or create to the common folder .........

Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

I just recently built a new linux server Redhat Enterprise Linux 6 and installed Samba version 3.5.4-68.el6.I copied a configuration file from an old Linux Server (Redhat Enterprise Linux 3.0AS) with a properly running Samba version 3.07131 . To make sure that everything will be ok, I created the same group and added the users on that group and created the same directories with the file name and attributes as that of the old server. Evrything seems fine as I can see all the shared folders on the windows XP and windows 7 Machines until I tried to write something on those folder. I keep getting the message that the action is denied and I need permission to perform that action. I do not know what to do next, hence this post.Below is the copy of my configuration file.
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too

I have mounted samba volume and I need to have write permissions for every new folder that's being created (currently, by default, on every newly created folder i have only read and execute permissions).I tried changing umask, but with no effect on mounted folder, umask changed only for local filesystem. I tried mounting with umask option, but with no effect again.I'm using ArchLinux on this machine, and I installed samba using default package manager (pacman).

Following a re-install of Ubuntu 9.04 I now find that I am now unable to access some of the Windows folders on the "C:/> Drive" as I did before the re-install was done.
Using the access from "Places" only some of the folders are listed. I have also been trying to re-configure "Wine" to run one or two of the applications in Windows. However, I was able to configure one such application to run but from the External HDD, because I had a backup copy of the ".exe" file. I transferred this file to the Internal HDD and it now runs satisfactory. The other applications are inaccessible because of this "Access" shortcoming. Strangely, I somehow was able to get to the "Start Menu" in Windows listing all the applications' shortcut links, but sadly not the Programs Folder with the ".exe" files in Windows.
I would appreciate any help and/or advice of how I can overcome this problem to enable me to access all Folders in Windows XP.

samba quit working after win7 I'm new-ish to linux(not using ubuntu tho, but servers)i don't know what PID is.. i just installed a new ubuntu server of an old computer, for file sharing in workgroup with samba, and a little apache server running webmin is also running, giving me an error when restarting samba all worked very well untill i used win7 to access the \server this blog post have a fix for vista7? connecting to samba, but wont fix my problem after i connected to the share with win7 nothing seems to work
Quote:
# service samba status
* nmbd is running
* could not access PID file for smbd
and this:
# service samba start
* starting samba deamons [fail]
restart wont work, neither do reboot the server. I am clueless some of my research is pointing me to /var/run/ and there is no smbd.pid there, not in any folder (nmbd.pid exist) i found something
# service samba reload
* Reloading /etc/samba/smb.conf smbd only
No process in pidfile `/var/run/samba/smbd.pid' found running; none killed.
[ OK ]
i dont have any smbd.pid in the samba dir, should i create a new one.. and where do i get the PID -id that should be inside?

i have 3 shares on my samba. i have users - user, manager and boss projects is RW to everyone reference is R to everyone RW to manager and boss Proposals is RW only to boss, no access to others However when boss logs in and creates a directory in projects share, the directory can only be renamed bu users and manager, and directory contents are read only for users and managers, even deletion / rename is denied. How can i make sure that when ever boss creates a directory in projects, it retains base folder permissions and is writable to user this is my samba file... i am using red hat 6.1 with samba 3.5.6 (i think)
