OpenSUSE :: Top Indicating Wrong Amount Of Memory Used?
Jun 4, 2010as you should see, top is indicating 3.544.864kb (3.5Gb) of memory used while gnome system monitor only 609Mb. What's wrong here? (I am pretty sure Gnome SM is right. Top is updating every sec.)

Jun 16, 2010I just received a band new DELL laptop with a blank disk and installed Kubuntu Lucid Alternate 64 on it. No problem during install (the only option I specified was for an encrypted LVM), but when I try to boot all I can see are colored lines scrolling/blinking on the screen. If I press any key it changes to white text (unreadable) scrolling/blinking.
If I press a key during the boot and get into grub, I cannot edit the boot options, cannot go to command line, cannot use MemTest86 (maybe because the partition is encrypted). Booting with the recovery mode shows the same lines. Edit: if I try to boot with the standard LiveCD, I get the same mess, so it's abviously a video card problem. Damn, I had checked beforehand that Ubuntu could run smoothly on it.

May 16, 2011I have just installed 11.04 on an eeePC B602 connected to my LG TV over HDMI
All runs fine, except the video is at the wrong aspect ratio. (this results in everything looking too fat!
Running the Preferences->Monitor utility shows that I have 1024x768 resolution selected at 75Hz (good!, as that is what the TV manual recommends), but it says that the aspect ratio is 4:3, but I want 16:8
Running xrandr gives:
Interesting, the physical dimensions reported 828mm x 620mm which is 4:3, but I want 694x393mm (I measured it with a ruler), which is 16:9
The card is a Radeon HD3400 series
So, what do I do next, in the good-old-days, you could just edit xorg.conf, but it seems that this no longer exists.
I am guessing that there is an xrandr command to change it, but after reading the man page for a while and playing around, could not get it to work.

Feb 2, 2010I'm a Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) user.Everytime I start Ubuntu up, before the login screen, I get a message that there's something wrong with the graphics or videocard, telling me that I'd have to run Ubuntu in low-resolution. Okay, fine, log-in screen, I log in. The wallpaper loads. That's all that loads. No panels at all, no desktop icons, nothing. Alt + F2 doesn't work and I strongly fear that I'd have to reinstall Ubuntu, and that's a great loss to all my files. I currently can't afford external memory and I don't have external memory in possession.

Jun 11, 2010I am running ubuntu 10.04 with the fglrx driver installed with apt-get. I have an ATI Radeon HD AGP with 512MB of video ram. My bios window size is 64MB. The Xorg.0.log file shows that 512MB is recognized. I also tried checking the /proc/mtrr file and it shows two values one I believe is my ram size which looks to be correct at 1.5GB the other is 512MB which I think is my video ram size, but when I do an lspci -v the video ram size shows 256MB. I am trying to run Doom 3 and it only allows me to use 256MB of memory.

Jan 20, 2011I installed the video drivers for my ATi 3870 and I found out the hard way it was the wrong driver, so now upon booting I can only get as far as an Ubuntu screen with some text and then my computer will restart once it reaches that point. It'll keep doing this until I turn it off, and I can't seem to get to a point in which I can get any control over it. I made a live CD but it has the same effect.

May 8, 2010I have a video edited in Pitivi. The source files were recorded from a VHS tape, so it's NTSC size (720x480).
Problem is that when I render it the output looks stretched vertically. When I play it in Totem Movie Player, the aspect ratio option can be changed from "Auto" to "4:3 TV" and then it looks correct.
How can I render the output file with a different aspect ratio?
I tried going into Project Settings and adjusting the Video Output height and width, but this doesn't change the aspect ratio. Also tried PAL and VGA instead of NTSC. What should I try next?
Using the version of Pitivi that comes with a fresh install of 10.04 LTS.

May 15, 2010ive been trying to install 10.4 as a fresh install from a LiveCD. I downloaded the 64 bit ISO (I use Win7x64 normally, my processer is a core2 duo 2.2ghz or something along those lines), booted it up, and it starts loading. after a while, the screen chantges to a massive amount of coloured static. I tried reburning the disc, but it made no difference. Im now redownloading the file and the 32bit version too. Is this a problem anyone else has had, and if it is, is there any way to solve it? I would really like to use the 64 bit version.

Aug 3, 2011I would like to upgrade my linux distro, since I'm using Karmic Koala and it is no longer supported anymore. However, upgrading via the updater always breaks my system, so I want to do a clean install. However, I have a LOT of programs installed in this machine, including a good number of games. Otherwise I think most of my data is neatly confined to my home folder, which I can easily transfer via external hard drive.
How do I get all my programs over, however? Like my PDF printer, for example, or all my games, or Inkscape, or Skype, or any number of things that I have installed. Especially WICD. I can never get my wireless internet to work without WICD. I will make a list of my programs beforehand, just in case something goes wrong, but is there any kind of less painful and time-consuming way to do this than going back and installing every program all over again from scratch?

I would however like to use Banshee, but in Banshee all my iPod 5G-music is displayed under the video folder, while the music folder is empty. Any idea why?And also I have several albums with different artists on them, which gets spread out on i.e. 10 single albums even though they belong to the same album. This happens - as far as I can tell - after I've accessed the iPod from Rhythmbox (which is part of the reason why I wanna use Banshee).

Sep 17, 2010Initially when I upgraded to Lucid I uninstalled openJDK and switched back to sun-java5 packages due to some application support limitations. Now I have to upgrade to sun-java6- packages. I removed the sun-java5 packages and installed the sun-java6 packages. Including the sun-java6-plugin.
I can see the plugin in aboutlugins in Firefox 3.6.10 however nothing (like webex or applets) related to java works. As a workaround I have used the Icedtea plugin which comes with open JDK and that seems to work. However I want to get the sun-java6-plugin working.

Debian Installation :: Booting Options Not Displayed On Startup?
Apr 30, 2011i have a pc having OS Windows XP and Windows 7 installed (hd0,0 and hd0,1). Yesterday i installed Debian 6(hd0,5). But it doesn't show boot menu on startup. It automatically load GRUB and start loading Debian. While i m on GNOME or KDE i can see all the files of windows XP n 7. Is any way to rescue and boot with Windows???
And yah one more thing ... i also dont have menu.lst file in /boot/grub/.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Migration Attempt Gone Wrong
Feb 27, 2011I installed Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit version) a few months ago on a system with two IDE drives (cable select configuration). The primary drive (/dev/sda) is 40GB and the secondary drive (/dev/sdb) is 80GB. I created all of my partitions on the primary drive and left the secondary drive unconfigured. After a month or so I noticed that two of my partitions had quickly reached 50% capacity, as I had just taken a guess at an appropriate partition size when I first installed Ubuntu.
Since I had a larger unused drive already in place, I decided to migrate my installation from the smaller drive to the larger drive, but sizing the partitions in question more appropriately (i.e., much larger). I assumed that I could install Ubuntu on the bigger drive with larger partitions, byte-for-byte copy all my existing partitions from the old disk to the new one, edit /etc/fstab, reboot, and GBTW. Naturally that didn't work as I expected.
Here's what I did: Carefully logged my existing partitions on /dev/sda and their mount points Used a live CD to install the same version of Ubuntu on the larger drive (/dev/sdb), using its partition tool to generously size my partitions. I carefully logged the new partitions and their mount points. For each partition on /dev/sda (except for /boot and swap), I used dd to create a gzip'd image and stored all of those images on a backup drive.
I then used dd to complete the task of migrating all of these partitions (again, all but /boot and swap) to their respective partitions on /dev/sdb.
Ran blkid to see all of my partitions. I noticed that some of the UUIDs existed on both drives. I thought "hmmm...that's weird" and moved on.
Mounted my new root partition (/dev/sdb6) on a contrived mount point.
Edited /etc/fstab (after backing it up) and carefully replaced all the old UUIDs with their respective counterparts on my new drive. Also replaced the device reference for /boot with its respective counterpart.
Crossed fingers. Rebooted. Got some warnings about missing UUIDs.
After the system completely booted, I used the graphical disk utility and saw that the system mounted some partitions from /dev/sda and others from /dev/sdb. Not good.
Here are the steps I took since lurking here:
It seems my installation still has an identity crisis. What steps should I take from here to force my Ubuntu installation to only use my partitions on /dev/sdb?
Was there an easier way for me to migrate my installation to a new drive?

I had it running pretty nicely on Ubuntu10.10, I started windows and later restarted and after that it wouldn't get past the Graphic cards bios. this is rather odd isn't it? I suspect it maybe dead or that my motherboard bios is stuffed but i reset that too and it still wont go.. The specs are Pentium4 Proccesor 1gb ram motherboard 661gx-m7 Nvidia GeForce FX5200 DDr128mb

Looks to me like the installation media for i386 doesn't have an i386 kernel! I'm trying to install to an i586 CPU.
