Fedora :: Safe Way To Disable Xsession Error Log File?

Mar 26, 2009

I noticed the xsession-error file in my main user's home folder grow up to a big size, it's usually at 2-3MB sometimes up to 20MB. I use Fedora 10 64bit and KDE4.2. I got no problems at all and the xsession-error logfile is full of weird entrys, almost everything is reporting to it, mplayer, xine, opera, firefox, dolphin and many other software I use. I don't think the most of these entrys are real and critical system errors, especially all the mplayer stuff. However, I'm not worried about the file size since Fedora 10 seems to delete the file on every log in.

My problem is the disc access because all this never ending writings to hard disc kinda break things like the mount options noatime, nodiratime. I read something about you can redirect the logfile to /dev/null but that was for an ubunto distribution and I would like to get a how to for a save way to disable the xsession-error logfile, I got 8GB RAM so everything is in cache anyway after a long session, I really want to get rid of unnessesary hard disc access like that. If not recommend to disable it, can I direct it to an usb stick or ssd?

General :: How To Disable Root Login (Not Over SSH)

Nov 26, 2010

I have already disabled root login over the ssh by modifying /etc/ssh/sshd_config. But how would I disable root login on a server itself. We have implemented LDAP in our environment and our security guide states that root login must be obtained by first logging into the host using his/her own regular userid then gaining root privileges by using the SU.

Fedora :: Can't Login Into The Root Account: It Returns Me Immediately To The Login Prompt?

Jan 27, 2010

I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared). Why is this happening? Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

Debian :: Root Login Without Setting Root Password

May 14, 2015

I edited fstab to automatically mount my windows data partition on boot, but I screwed it up by not specifying the file system type, however that is not the problem, I was able to fix that easily. The problem was that when it failed to mount the partition, Debian automatically entered root and I guess that is to be expected in order for me to fix it, but I never configured a root password and it just gave me full root access without asking any password, not even my user password. I though that was strange so I set the root password and sure thing it asked me for the root password this time without automatically logging into root....

I then tried to lock the root account to see if it will ask me for a password or not, it did but of course I wasn't able to login as root because it was locked now and I was left with no way to access the system. I had to fix fstab from a live cd so that I can login normally as the user....

I didn't know what to search for or if that is the expected behavior if you don't set root password during installation, but it just seemed a bit strange to automatically enter root when you specifically disable root login during installation...

OpenSUSE Install :: SuSE-Kernel Ignores Framebuffer Disable Via Vga=0?

May 6, 2011

Kernel parameter vga=0 or vga=normal does not work as expected - First it works as expected text mode resolution is 80x25, but after some seconds the kernel, or the initramdisk does switch resolution of console again! I hate to say but it looks like OpenSuSe (again) thinks it is more clever than the user.Since rmmod radeon in runlevel 3 says "ERROR: Module radeon is in use", I do think that somehow SuSe ignores my vga=0 ... Is it the kernel or the ramdisk, I do not know where to search, since the parameter vga=0 is accepted and used in the beginning - it switch again after "doing fast boot" or 1-2 lines later..

Debian Hardware :: Enable / Disable USB Root Hub

Basically what I'm wanting to do is only have one USB keyboard connected active/enabled at any given time. i.e., enable B1D14 and disable B5D2, then enable B5D2 and disable B1D14. I'm actually wanting to enable/disable at the root hub. Something analogous to mount/umount a device instead of a file system.
