Ubuntu Installation :: Pure LXDE Borked Xsession Autologin?

Nov 28, 2010

Installed 10.10 Ubuntu and found the Dell D820 did not digest Gnome that easily. I tried adding Lubuntu from repos after adding PPA. Seemed unstable to use, so I followed Psychocat direction for Pure LXDE and removed Ubuntu. Now login is giving error "xsession:unable to launc "openbox-gnome" X Session --- "openbox-gnome" not found; falling back to defaultsession." Where do I correct the xsession login to allow auto login. (I know the chances for autologin, and still choose to use it)

Debian :: Enabling Autologin In LXDE Not Working

Nov 30, 2015

I'm running Debian + LXDE in a VirtualBox. Here are the details:

Code: Select all➜  ~  hostnamectl
   Static hostname: debian64
         Icon name: computer-vm
           Chassis: vm
        Machine ID: #############################
           Boot ID: ###########################
    Virtualization: kvm
  Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux stretch/sid
            Kernel: Linux 4.2.0-1-amd64
      Architecture: x86-64

I really would like to jump into my desktop environment when I start my machine without the need to enter my user name and password. Apparently this is very easy to do. I added the following lines to my /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

Code: Select allpam-service=lightdm
pam-autologin-service=lightdm-autologin
autologin-user=username
autologin-user-timeout=0
session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession

And also added my user to the autologin group

Code: Select allgroupadd -r autologin
gpasswd -a username autologin

As you can imagine, it didn't work. Otherwise I wouldn't be here... I also tried to install Slim and enable autologin adding the following line to the /etc/slim.conf

Code: Select allauto_login = yes

That didn't work either!

Am I missing anything? Enabling autologin in LXDE?

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove Pure-ftpd Pure Admin - Getting A 530 Authentication Error

Mar 24, 2011

I am having problems troubleshooting my pure-ftpd setup. I am always getting a 530 authentication error. I attempted to correct the problem by doing the following:

# pure-pw mkdb
# ln -s /etc/pure-ftpd/conf/PureDB /etc/pure-ftpd/auth/PureDB
# gedit /etc/pure-ftpd/conf/PAMAuthentication

[code]....

This create a new error. 421 Unable to read the indexed puredb file (or old format detected) - Try pure-pw mkdb I am getting a feeling this is getting from bad to worse. I attempted to remove pure-ftpd and pureadmin to start over again. However, it appears I cannot remove everything. I attempted the following:

apt-get remove pure-ftpd pureadmin I am not sure what this really does because I can still see the folder /etc/pure-ftpd and I cannot remove it. I could not use rm /etc/pure-ftpd because the system said it was not empty. I also tried sudo aptitude remove pure-ftpd pureadmin . Again I cannot completely remove the folder. How do I completely remove pure-ftpd and pure admin and all databases, files and folders so I have a fresh system ready to start the install again?

OpenSUSE Install :: Inconsistent Autologin / Can't Get Autologin To Work Consistently?

Nov 29, 2009

I've been on 11.2 KDE for about a week (clean install). Previously on 11.1 Gnome. Everything's great except I can't get Autologin to work consistently. It worked perfectly in 11.1 Gnome! In 11.2 KDE sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I set it up as root in both Yast and System Settings.

Software :: Pure-authd Not Passing Variables To Pure-ftpd

Feb 9, 2011

I have set up pure-authd and pure-ftpd. They are both running, I have created the socket etc.

In my authentication module (a php script) for testing purposes I have done a vardump in to a file, and have realised that pure-authd is not passing on any variables (username, password of the current person trying to log in via ftp) to the PHP script.

I am sure the authentication module is working (have tested it vigorously on the command line), but after 10 hours wondering why it wouldnt work and messing about with the script, I have realised that the variables were never even getting in to the script in the first place!

I am running the processes such as this:

Everything seems as if it is working other than this. For instance, when testing the setup with a very basic auth module which doesnt require a username or password (the basic module just passes "auth_ok:1" to pure-ftpd and the user is then logged in), I can log in to the FTP server fine.

But like I say, a vardump ($argv) on my proper PHP authentication script would suggest that no username or password are being passed to it.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Is Borked After Last Update?

Sep 7, 2010

Whilst I've been using Ubuntu for years now, I don't really do much at the command-line, basically because I don't *have* to (which, to me is the beauty of this OS!). However, the last update via update manager has rendered my dual-boot with Vista on an Asus laptop non-functioning (at least Linux). What happens is this: after the BIOS splash screen, it says starting GRUB and then, instead of a menu of current and recent Linux versions and the Vista option at the bottom (white text against colour background) it now just shows one line of the menu in magenta... the rest of the menu is black, but the arrow keys will show the other options. Hitting ENTER does nothing: the text line is replaced with a blinking underline which goes back to the text in magenta again when i hit ESC. I can't seem to ESC or SHIFT to GRUB's command-line prompt at all. I've boot to the LiveCD and ran a boot_info_script in bash: here is what that revealed:

Code:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Syslinux is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Borked Partitioning

Jan 1, 2011

I attempted to install windows 7 to the partition where vista was installed. The install failed, think it's a dodgy burn, and obviosuly took grub with it. However it's also somehow screwed up the partitioning of an extended partition where instead of two ubuntu's, a partition for my media files and test partition for chrome all is left is a big chunk of 'unallocated' and swap. I found a recovery tutorial here but the instructions are little vague.

Ubuntu :: How To Run .Xsession In 10.04

Jun 9, 2010

I recently upgraded to 10.04, but I'll be darned if I can get GDM to run my personal .Xsession (or .xsession or .xinitrc or.Xclients...) when I log in. I don't see any option on the session menu. The only entries are window managers and "xterm". My script works when I log in from the console. don't tell me that Ubuntu (or GDM) has made things simpler by taking away the option of a .Xsession! Nah, couldn't be.

Fedora Installation :: New Install With Only LXDE

But after the installation-proces finished and I did a reboot, I only got a commandline in which I only was able to log into as root. No LXDE. Nor did the command "startx" start X. to my surprise. On another pc I did an install of F10 with Gnome and later on I've installed LXDE. After a reboot I was able to select LXDE in gdm. But how can I get a clean install of F10 with only LXDE? What am I missing here?

General :: Best LXDE Based Distro/distro That Supports LXDE?

Dec 15, 2010

Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).

LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.
