Ubuntu :: File Sharing Filling The Gaps?
Feb 10, 2010
I am relatively new to ubuntu/linux and although I have made some good progress on my server I'm struggling with a few points. I am sure what I'm about to ask has been covered in some other thread/guide but I just cant pick out the missing piece hence my direct question;I have 2 computers; a server and mediacenter.on the server I have installed nfs:
Code:
sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server nfs-common portmap
then
[code]....

Directories(-entries) are in a EXT2 file system
managed in a singly linked list.
Delete files in the directory causes Gaps or holes to appear in
the linked list of the directory. How does a C-source code look like,
which would reorganize this list and remove the gaps or Holes.

I work for a company that makes portable devices running Linux and I was recently asked to make the underlying file system read-only for "security" purposes. Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.

I've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and I'm using GNOME classic instead of Unity.
Here's my problem:
Sometimes, I see gaps in the panels. Portions of the background picture can be seen trough them. These gaps are usually temporary. Right now I can't provide you with a screenshot of such a gap (I haven't made a screenshot).
What could be the cause?

just installed dwm i'm getting border gaps while in monocle view and tiling mode.i set border to 0 in my config.h file which fixed the problem, but after rebooting/suspend? the problem appeared again.

I am using nvidia-settings to configure multiple monitors . The monitors' native resolutions are different, so this generates 'gaps' where the items are drawn on the virtual screen but not on any of the physical ones. How can I configure the display settings to not have any content drawn on the regions which are not directly mapped to a physical screen?

I am facing some problems in font rendering issue for Urdu (South Asian language). Actually the alphabets are being displayed as, for example, "a p p l e" instead of "apple" - if you see this website, probably you will see the gaps in alphabets are making them difficult to read.
I have installed at least 10 different Urdu fonts but still no help, then I tried adding:
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO="0" to /etc/environment but it also did not helped.
I am using OpenSuse 11.2, Firefox 3.5.10

I have a Server Computer with a 2.0 TB RAID on it. I want to be able to access and modify the files on it from any computer remotely. Is what I am looking for an "SSH Tunnel" to fileshare over the Internet? If this is what I want, please help me find the resources for doing this. I dont even know where to begin!I am running Ubuntu 10.10.I am not looking for remote computing. I cannot guarantee that the remote computer I am on will have Ubuntu on it. I want the files to show up like they would over normal SMB/SAMBA networking. I just want to be on any computer in the world, enter in an IP address, enter a password, connect, and be able to access my files.

Problem: Neither Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64 bit machine can access any shared folders on windows PC's, or on the other Ubuntu machine. However, my windows machine CAN access the folders I've set up to share with Samba.
When I click Places>Network it FINDS the other computers, but when I double click one of the other machines the "wait" pointer comes up and then it says: blah blah blah... "The folder could not be displayed: Sorry, could not display all the contents of "Windows shares on debbie-desktop": DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."
Why can the windows computers access shared files FROM linux, but the linux computers can't access anything non-local?

I keep trying and keep trying to set up my father's documents folder on our PC running Ubuntu 11.04 as a shared folder across the network with Windows computers, and I keep getting error messages like this one:
"'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /home/frank as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own. Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = false" to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this."
I currently have his home folder set up so anyone on our PC running Ubuntu can access and change the files, at the moment. I also want to know if I can set up this file sharing with Windows, but still have all his files protected with a password?

I just installed 9.10 and I tried to share specific folders by right clicking and selecting share. Not a problem.
However when I goto a Windows machine I see the share but cannot connect, says incorrect login/ password. I used the same login/ pass for the linux box and I created a new user and I still get the same results. What am I doing wrong?
I want to use the GUI for this please. When I edit the smb.conf I don't see the share.

I have tried to set up file sharing using ssh, samba with no luck. I now have it set up using NFS the only thing is it is just one way and I need it both ways. I was wondering if I installed the same packages on the other pc if I could make this work both ways.
The command I used on the first pc was:
sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server nfs-common portmap
And on the other pc the command was:
sudo apt-get install nfs-common portmap
Or is there a better way?

How can you turn off unwanted file uploads in Amule? In Limewire you can decide if you want to share files or not. How can you do this in Amule. I've turned down the settings to 0 or1 and reduced the bandwidth time etc. But to actually prevent? Also in windows there's all kinds of file splitters and joiners what is recommended in Ubuntu.

I have a small home/office network, which currently consists of a very old mac running osx10.4, a windoze 7 laptop and an ubuntu 10.04/windoze vista laptop, along with a homebrew setup on a wii which understands smb. I'm in the process of setting up an additional ubuntu PC which will, among other things act as a file and web server, mainly for web development and for sharing files, music and videos.
Up until now I've just run everything on SMB, and I will have to set samba up on the new server, but I would prefer to use a different protocol for the ubuntu and mac systems, as SMB doesn't recognise/create file permissions properly and it takes a while sometimes to notice new files in folders it's recently looked in.

I have encountered many problems in Ubuntu, many of which I have been able to figure out how to fix myself (except a few tricky ones). Found a new one recently that I just cannot figure out. I have set up file sharing on my network between two systems running Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), one a desktop and the other a laptop. I Installed the proper packages on both systems, and it seemed to be working properly. However, on the laptop, when I try to mount or access the public-files of the desktop or laptop I receive the following error:
Code:
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

I use VirtualBox at work, where windows7 is host and ubuntu 10.04 is guest operating system.
I want to access my windows drives, folders in ubuntu, when i did sudo blkid or mount or fdisk -l, i cannot see all the drives on my machine.
So i finally did with shared folders concept. Now i can't mount them wherever i want, but when i say automount in the virtualbox settings->sharedfolder, then it auto mounts in /media/E-drive??
But to see, copy, edit or access those media files, i need to be sudo?? With normal user i can't use those /media files.
Suggest a good method of sharing files from windows7 to ubuntu in virtualbox

I have 4 computers/users and we need to put all the files on a central server. The server is running Ubuntu 10.04. What is the best way for these 4 XP users to see the files that will be stored on the server?
Or basically, how will I either share or map the files *from* Ubuntu *to* XP? Also, the users will be reading, writing, creating and deleting files on the server.
