Ubuntu :: Wlan Signal Went Down With Upgrade To 9.10?
Apr 23, 2010
in my work computer i put ubuntu, i had to install the version8.4 then i had to upgrade one by one to 9.10 because the computer was not able to detect it via a usb live instalation. in my wlan signal when i had 8.4 it had the 4 stripes that mean the signal was like 90% but every time i upgraded the signal became weaker, and now that i upgraded to 9.10 the signal is 14% it takes forever to DL the updates and aplications. and the connection is 2mbps
i have a really old laptop a toshiba sa30-3-3 with 512 in ram and a pentium 4 a3.06ghz.
does anybody have an idea of whats going on and how to get ti fixed.

I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 on an IBM Intellistation Z Pro (64-bit).Install went smoothly.Upon restart, everything works fine up until the log-in screen. The normal hardware checks all run and the new white Ubuntu symbol appears but when it switches to the log-in screen, a "No signal" message appears on the display and the green power light goes orange.
I can still log-in remotely from another machine and access all the files and drives, run jobs etc., so the machine did start-up properly, it is just an issue with the display.

I'm running Fedora 15 KDE on a Sony Vaio VPCS13V9E. No problems in connecting to the wlan. Today I upgraded the system. There was an upgrade for Network Manager. After the upgrade the system is not able to connect to the modem - router (Linksys WAG320N) any more. Network manager keeps on crashing and sends messages like "network disabled" or "connection failed". Kde demon is reporting errors too. I guess the new version of Network Manager is bugged, because before the upgrade it did work well ... (unbelievable!).

My version of Squeeze was about half a year old when I updated/upgraded it just now. As part of the (longish) process I was advised to run apt-get autoremove, which removed what looked like a stunning amount of material. As another part I noticed a huge number of error messages about nonexistent locale files (I think) whizzing by.
Well, the result has various cosmetic changes and no doubt fewer bugs, but it doesn't have WLAN. I used to see an icon at the top right like two tadpoles chasing each other, turning into a set of green (if I was lucky) or grey (if not) bars. No longer. No tadpoles, no bars, no error message, nothing.
This very recent thread ("Just isntall debian 6.0, wired networking ok but no wireless") looks helpful. However, I don't know what WLAN hardware I've got or how to get a text dump of this kind of thing. 4D696B65 kindly points the person who asked to wiki.debian.org/ipw2200. I don't know whether I have any of these "Intel PRO/Wireless 2100, 2200 and 2915 devices" but I'm encouraged to read there that [the file] is now also available in the nonfree-firmware tarball which we build regularly on cdimage.debian.org. Supply this blob on a CD/floppy/USB drive etc. and d-i will do the right thing. I don't know what either "blob" or "d-i" means, but I was rather hoping that some software or other would look at the hardware, look at the available firmware, and install accordingly (as happened months ago). So got the (small) file; I opened it up; I copied the contents to a CD (even though it's not an ISO). But apt-cdrom add is not interested.

There is no wlan0 interface when trying to run FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N 2.4 on OpenSuSE 11.2, though it works fine on Fedora 11 and Mandriva Spring 2009.1. All 64bit. Contrary to Fedora and Mandriva, there is no need to compile the compat-wireless module ar9170usb for OpenSuSE 11.2 because the kernel is very recent and includes this driver. Kernel: 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop The /var/log/messages gives this after I put the stick in the PC. At first it is seen as a mass storage device:

When I start Ubuntu, the Ubuntu logo appears, then the screen goes black and "No Signal" appears on the monitor screen.
Earlier today, I installed a new processor, a dual-channel AMD from a single channel AMD. I decided to put the entire computer into a new case since I was dismantling everything. I have two hard drives: one for Ubuntu and one for Windows XP.
When I started it up, I got errors 13 and 17. I went into the BIOS and changed the disk order. Now Grub appears and I can get into Windows, but I cannot get into Ubuntu.

About 50% of the time when I boot my 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 machine, while Ubuntu is loading, my screen will go black and my monitor tells me it is receiving no signal. From here, I have about a 20% chance of getting signal back if I pound my keyboard to death or turn my monitor off/on multiple times.

After that I tried to edit the grub like a thread said by changing splash or whatever to nomodeset and it won't allow me to edit.

I installed several desktops on my system to test them out recently. After that I did an update and the system proposed to autoremove some files that were not used anymore. Since then, I can't connect to the internet from any of my desktop environments. In GNOME, the wireless network applet completely disappeared, the same thing with KDE, so I'm thinking a system driver must have been deleted. Could you indicate me any file that I might need to download to repair this problem?

my netbook doesn't see my HomeWlan, but like every other int he neighborhood. I am using a live-usb atm because i want to check if everything works out bevor i completely install ubuntu.
Details: I want to use my home-WLAN but Ubuntu doesn't see it, which is quite fascinating because it does see a bunch of other which belong to the neighbors. The second quite interesting part is that when i switch to windows i can connect without any problems (and yes it does see it as well). Any clues what might cause that behavior? My only guess is that the adapter broadcasts on a false Channel, but i aint sure about that. I entered "sudo iwlist chan" and the output is:
Code:
lo no frequency information
eth0 no frequency information
eth1 14 channels in total; available frequencies :
//bunch of frequencies
current channel 1
So i guess my adapter broadcasts on channel 1, but my router does on channel 6 (I am sure about that part). But when i tried to "fix" it with "iwconfig eth1 channel 6" and then i check the channels again, it is still on the same on (Channel 1). Well, i do have a second guess but this one seems even more unrealistic than the first one, it might be possible that my adapter isn't strong enough to get the signal, even though there are just like 2 1/2 Walls between. But this scenario is really unlikely because my netbook is getting so much other signals.

I was running windows vista 32 bit (NOW UBUNTU 9.10) on my custom built pc with a TP-LINK TL-WN353GD wireless pci card, before on vista my wifi signal strength would be in the low 70% range with a speed of 54 Mbps from a access point roughly 250 yards away, now with ubuntu 9.10 signal strength in the 15-20% range with a speed of 1 Mbps. My question is, what is the best way to overcome this wifi signal strength and speed problem, it is a noticable performance disadvatange easily seen on a website like ..... where as before videos would play 95% of the time without having to stop and catch up, would a different wireless pci card be a better choice than what I have, or is the problem in the software as in a driver incompatability or lack of correct driver, not sure how to remedy the problem.

I have installed Lucid on my G4 Cube and it works fine except that I only get a video signal on the VGA connector. I would like to use my 15" Apple Studio LCD, but cannot get a signal on the ADC connector. If I boot the the original OS 9 CD, it works, so I don't think it is a hardware problem. I have tried creating an xorg.conf file with many different setting - still no signal to the LCD.

I installed 10.04 1st by making a partition with bootcamp on MacOSX.Then I formatted the partition according to Ubuntu's instructions. I didn't install rEFIt, because I prefer to just hit the alt (option) key.I made the necessary adjustments according to URL...Community Ubuntu Documentation - and everything seemed to be working fine.I upgraded to Maverick and everything seemed to be working fine aswell. But then I noticed, that the wireless signal keeps failing and I'm asked to put the password again and again..
I don't think this is due to the upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, but I just noticed it recently, maybe because of the air humidity, the signal was stronger a few days a go.. don't know!!Is there anything I can do?Perhaps install a new driver, or another wificlient, like Wifi-Radar??

At my workplace the wireless connection is open but once you connect you first need to authenticate on your browser to be able to use the internet. On Windows as soon as I open whatever page I get the login request. On Linux I open firefox but nothing happens, just get the usual error page like if I had no connection. The IP's I get as well as DNS seem ok, I even tryed to match them up with windows.I tried a lot but can't get to the login page.

I remember a few months ago I attempted to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell laptop however the Dell 1397 internal card wasn't recognized which was a huge problem. I posted here & nobody responded. Now before I try and install 10.10 on my laptop, is there a way I can verify that my WLAN card will be recognized by the kernel or is it the same thing as 10.04?

I've decided to try out Ubuntu again on my Samsung netbook. I tried 9.10 before and a lot of things didn't work so I gave up, but that was quite a long time ago and I wanted to see if the new one will work.
I booted 10.10 off the USB stick, don't want to zap my Windows 7 installation if Ubuntu doesn't work. Everything seems to run fine, the webcam works, wireless seems to work, it shows the networks in the range and allows me to pick the one I want to connect to.
Sounds good so far, but when I try to connect to my WLAN and put in my password it thinks about it for a while and just pops the password again. It can't seem to connect to the network even though it sees it and the password is correct. I triple checked the password, it's definitely correct.
I can only assume there's something wrong with ubuntu and the driver. I have a Samsung N140 netbook which uses Realtek 8192E chipset.

Today I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. After accidentally turning off the computer during the upgrade, booting into recovery mode, remounting the file system as writable and finishing the upgrade, it worked just fine.
However, I can no longer use any wireless networks. Wired ethernet works fine, but the wireless inteface won't even show up when I run ifconfig. When I first installed 10.10, it worked instantly and I was able to use it during installation.
I have an HP Compaq nx7300 laptop with a Broadcom BCM4311 network card.

On an Asrock ION 330HT-BD box Im running Ubuntu 9.10 (2.6.31-17-generic) with the nVidia driver 185.18.36. The Asrock box uses the nVidia ION chip and the nVidia driver appears to be working without any problems.
My problem is, that I what to use the box as a MythTV frontend with an (old) SD Plasma screen as display, which have a native resolution of 852 x 480 and I cant get the box to output a 852 x 480 signal. The Plasma is connected with a HDMI -> DVI cable. No matter what settings I have tried in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, the box keeps outputting a 1024 x 768 (or higher) signal
Questions:
1) Is the nVidia ION chip capable of outputting a 852 x 480 signal?
2) If Yes to above, how do I configure my xorg.conf file?
