Ubuntu :: Switching On The Internal WLAN?

Mar 30, 2011

I have a Fujitsu Siemans AMILO Li 2727 and have tried and like Linux Ubuntu. My problem is I have an internal ariel that switches off when you power down. It has to be manually switched on by pressing function F1. I can't get this to work in Linux - I want to be able to use my laptop with my wireless router again.

OpenSUSE Network :: No Wlan With FRITZ WLAN USB Stick N 2.4 On 11.2

Nov 27, 2009

There is no wlan0 interface when trying to run FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N 2.4 on OpenSuSE 11.2, though it works fine on Fedora 11 and Mandriva Spring 2009.1. All 64bit. Contrary to Fedora and Mandriva, there is no need to compile the compat-wireless module ar9170usb for OpenSuSE 11.2 because the kernel is very recent and includes this driver. Kernel: 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop The /var/log/messages gives this after I put the stick in the PC. At first it is seen as a mass storage device:

Ubuntu :: No More Internet / Wlan Not Available

Jun 13, 2010

I installed several desktops on my system to test them out recently. After that I did an update and the system proposed to autoremove some files that were not used anymore. Since then, I can't connect to the internet from any of my desktop environments. In GNOME, the wireless network applet completely disappeared, the same thing with KDE, so I'm thinking a system driver must have been deleted. Could you indicate me any file that I might need to download to repair this problem?

Ubuntu :: WLAN Is Not Found?

Oct 22, 2010

my netbook doesn't see my HomeWlan, but like every other int he neighborhood. I am using a live-usb atm because i want to check if everything works out bevor i completely install ubuntu.

Details: I want to use my home-WLAN but Ubuntu doesn't see it, which is quite fascinating because it does see a bunch of other which belong to the neighbors. The second quite interesting part is that when i switch to windows i can connect without any problems (and yes it does see it as well). Any clues what might cause that behavior? My only guess is that the adapter broadcasts on a false Channel, but i aint sure about that. I entered "sudo iwlist chan" and the output is:

Code:
lo no frequency information
eth0 no frequency information
eth1 14 channels in total; available frequencies :
//bunch of frequencies
current channel 1

So i guess my adapter broadcasts on channel 1, but my router does on channel 6 (I am sure about that part). But when i tried to "fix" it with "iwconfig eth1 channel 6" and then i check the channels again, it is still on the same on (Channel 1). Well, i do have a second guess but this one seems even more unrealistic than the first one, it might be possible that my adapter isn't strong enough to get the signal, even though there are just like 2 1/2 Walls between. But this scenario is really unlikely because my netbook is getting so much other signals.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Won't Connect To WLAN?

Oct 25, 2010

I've decided to try out Ubuntu again on my Samsung netbook. I tried 9.10 before and a lot of things didn't work so I gave up, but that was quite a long time ago and I wanted to see if the new one will work.

I booted 10.10 off the USB stick, don't want to zap my Windows 7 installation if Ubuntu doesn't work. Everything seems to run fine, the webcam works, wireless seems to work, it shows the networks in the range and allows me to pick the one I want to connect to.

Sounds good so far, but when I try to connect to my WLAN and put in my password it thinks about it for a while and just pops the password again. It can't seem to connect to the network even though it sees it and the password is correct. I triple checked the password, it's definitely correct.

I can only assume there's something wrong with ubuntu and the driver. I have a Samsung N140 netbook which uses Realtek 8192E chipset.

Ubuntu Networking :: No WLAN Interface On 11.04?

Apr 29, 2011

Today I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. After accidentally turning off the computer during the upgrade, booting into recovery mode, remounting the file system as writable and finishing the upgrade, it worked just fine.

However, I can no longer use any wireless networks. Wired ethernet works fine, but the wireless inteface won't even show up when I run ifconfig. When I first installed 10.10, it worked instantly and I was able to use it during installation.

I have an HP Compaq nx7300 laptop with a Broadcom BCM4311 network card.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wlan Has Stopped Working?

Jun 30, 2010

I have a Thinkpad T400 notebook that dual boots windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04. My wireless has worked both in windows and ubuntu for the past several months. However 2 days ago, the wireless in ubuntu stopped working. I think this may be a result of trying to set up a static eth0 connection between my laptop and an embedded board, but I dont see how messing with eth0 would stop the wlan from working.

Symptoms: When I left click on the network connections icon in the tray, all it lists under "Wireless networks" is "device not ready". Needless to say, there are no networks available to connect to. Also the wireless is working fine under windows.

But i cant even ping 192.168.1.1 (Network unreachable error). Is it possible that Ubuntu tries to use eth0 (which was connected to a similar /16 before) to ping 192.168.1.1 or is there somethign wrong with my commands?

Also will an AP allow access to the network although i don't have an IP from its DHCP server?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wlan Card Is Not Working Any More

Dec 25, 2010

I'm a new user of Ubuntu and I think I need some help but let me mention before that I got this up working on a Debian system. My current kernel version is $ uname -r 2.6.32-27-generic.The problem is that my wlan card is not working any more such that my system freezes every time I enable networking with the hardware switch on my laptop. Therefore I bought a USB - WLAN stick and try to get this working.

Network Manager has the option "enable wireless" greyed out if I disable the hardware switch. If I enable the hardware switch and remove the module of my wlan CARD before (modprobe -r iwl3945) it says "wireless disconnected" for all networks.

Ubuntu Installation :: Switching From 32 Bit To 64 Bit?

What I'm wondering is if there is a way that I could possibly switch to the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 and still be able to boot my Windows OS. I know that I could remove the 32 bit Ubuntu and start fresh, but I'm concerned that if I do that I might not be able to boot the Windows OS, due to the replacement of the Windows boot with GRUB.

Ubuntu :: Compositing Keeps Switching Off?

Nov 26, 2010

I'm running kubuntu, 10.10, 64 bit on my ASUS X59GL, with 4Gb ram - and NVIDIA on board GeForce 8200m.

I'm running KDE with compositing switched on - trouble is that it keeps saying Desktop effects are too slow and compositing is suspended. Surely this setup is powerful enough - this seems to be getting worse with each subsequent release - (a couple of releases ago, this didn't happen).

It's just happened again, and all I'm running is Firefox, nautilus, skype and dropbox (all but firefox are minimised), and uptime load average is .3 Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Is there any 'ratings' as to how 'expensive' each of the effects are? - i.e. which are the least impact, and which are the most?

Ubuntu :: Switching From GNOME To KDE?

Nov 26, 2010

I currently run Linux Mint 9/GNOME on my main desktop but am thinking of switching to KDE. The main reason being that the file managers seem to have more to offer than anything in GNOME and the DE itself just seems to look better.

So the question is, if I switch, what issues am I likely to run into? I would like to continue using as many of the same programs as possible and I know that a lot of them are going to require GNOME dependencies and either might not run or will run slow, but I'm not very Linux savvy and don't know much beyond that.

I would like to still use Compiz, Guayadeque, and a few other programs. If I am going to loose the ability to run a lot of programs I am use to just to get the nicer file browser and DE then it's probably not worth it.

I'm pretty familiar with GNOME now so I'm looking for some advice from KDE users, especially if you started with GNOME.

Ubuntu :: Switching From Gcc-4.4 To Gcc4.1?

Dec 2, 2010

I am trying to switch from gcc-4.4 (defaut with the "sudo apt-get install build-essential" command) to gcc-4.1

I was able to install gcc-4.1 using sudo apt-get install gcc-4.1 The command "which gcc-4.1" gives "/usr/bin/gcc-4.1" I suppose this means that it is properly installed. I was also able to uninstall gcc-4.4 using "sudo apt-get remove gcc-4.4" However, the command "gcc --version" gives "/usr/bin/gcc: No such file or directory" This is because the gcc file(?) is named gcc-4.1. A name change should work, I think. But I do not have the rights to rename this file (after right clicking, "rename" is inaccessable).

Is there some way to use sudo apt-get install gcc-4.1 and make it install into/usr/bin/gcc to avoid these issues?

Or maybe direct the OS to usr/bin/gcc-4.1 rather than usr/bin/gcc?

Ubuntu :: Switching From UFW To Iptables

Dec 20, 2010

So I've used UFW for quite some time now and its been great. But I'm thinking its time to take the plunge into iptables. I want to start blocking repeated connections from IPs trying to brute force my SSH.

I've been reading up on iptables, and it doesn't seem too bad. But I have a few questions I'm hoping people can help with.

1) If I've been using UFW, do I need to do anything special to switch to iptables. I was just going to do "ufw disable". But do I need to uninstall it, or something special. Because even when I do ufw disable, there are still lines in the iptables talking about ufw.

2) regarding those lines, do I need to get rid of them? Is there a way to revert the iptables back to default? These are the lines.

Code:

3) I've read some things that the order of rules in the "chain" matters, but I don't fully understand it. Does it just mean that whatever comes first within the chain takes precedence? So does that mean that if I want to add a new rule, I can't just add it, but I have to make sure it gets listed in the right order?

4) I don't fully understand what these "chains" are either. I can kind of understand the three main ones, INPUT, FORWARD and OUTPUT. But then ufw seems to have added a lot of other ones. What are those?

5) again on chains, if I add a drop IP to the INPUT chain. From my understanding it prevents it from connecting to you. Do I need to put it in the forward chain also? Or just worry about the input chain to prevent connections to me.
