Ubuntu :: Karmic Upgrade Now No Signal To Display

Mar 2, 2010

I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 on an IBM Intellistation Z Pro (64-bit).Install went smoothly.Upon restart, everything works fine up until the log-in screen. The normal hardware checks all run and the new white Ubuntu symbol appears but when it switches to the log-in screen, a "No signal" message appears on the display and the green power light goes orange.

I can still log-in remotely from another machine and access all the files and drives, run jobs etc., so the machine did start-up properly, it is just an issue with the display.

Ubuntu :: Will Not Display - No Signal

Jan 16, 2010

When I start Ubuntu, the Ubuntu logo appears, then the screen goes black and "No Signal" appears on the monitor screen.

Earlier today, I installed a new processor, a dual-channel AMD from a single channel AMD. I decided to put the entire computer into a new case since I was dismantling everything. I have two hard drives: one for Ubuntu and one for Windows XP.

When I started it up, I got errors 13 and 17. I went into the BIOS and changed the disk order. Now Grub appears and I can get into Windows, but I cannot get into Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: No Display Signal When Turning Monitor Off And On Again

Sep 13, 2010

If I turn off the monitors, I get a black screen (the monitors goes to power save) when I turn them on again.

I have a workaround which involves pressing ctrl-alt and f3 and then ctrl-alt f7. That usually works and brings up the graphical login-screen. And I get my session back.

But sometimes when I log in, my session is gone. It is as if I was logged out or the system has rebooted.

I have two monitors and Nvidia.

Have a Compaq Presario SR1915AN desktop with a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE it has a dual boot of Windows XP and Debian 5.0.6 which would only run in 800x600 mode.I decided to install Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop as this is what is on another different machine, thought it would be safe. The install wouldn't work, I would get the purple selections screen and first time chose the normal graphic mode, 10 seconds or so in to the install the scrren goes dead and i see the "No Signal Input" display show on the screen. Rebooted and selected text mode install, this time it fully installed but on reboot it again has the screen goes dead 10 seconds after you select from the Grub screen.

Ubuntu :: Karmic - Date/Time Display On Top Of Screen Panel

Feb 12, 2010

I have just updated to karmic. For some odd reason, the time/date indicator on the top panel now spreads the data over two lines, rather than placing them side by side. There doesn't seem to be any option in the preferences program to control this.

This means that the panel cannot be reduced below a two line minimum. Not only have I lost desktop space, but the panel icons have expanded to suit the new thicker panel.

Does the kernel driver only recognise internal displays until X takes over, or is there something wrong with the karmic 855GM kernel driver?

Ubuntu :: "No Signal" Message On The Screen - Force The Computer To Use The Secondary Display?

Jun 10, 2011

A friend of mine recently broke his laptop's screen. He knew I wanted to setup a small personal server so he gave it to me. I used an old monitor and wiped the HDD and installed Ubuntu. At the end I chose to upgrade the freshly installed OS. When I rebooted the computer after upgrading I couldn't get any images on the monitor. I tried to unplug/plug it several times but it doesn't work. I keep getting the "No signal" message on the screen.

Is there a way for me to somehow force the computer to use the secondary display? And if not is it possible to install and configure all the packages to run a VNC server on it without seeing anything?

Ubuntu :: KDE Broken After Upgrade Karmic / What To Do?

Apr 28, 2010

After upgrading my 64bit 9.10 install to lucid, KDE went poof. I am presented with the login screen, and after supplying my credentials the screen goes black and all I am left with is a mouse pointer.

According to ps kded4 is dead (zombie). kdm.log also indicates a problem with ibus. I installed the "ibus" pkg, but didn't resolve it. Attached is an excerpt of my kdm.log, I can't really find useful information in syslog/dmesg/messages. The system is up-to-date and I've tried starting with a clean user account as well as removing the .kde directory.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound After Upgrade To Karmic?

Jan 5, 2010

After i upgraded to karmic i experienced that the sound of spotify was at times strange. When i started a new song there was some strange plucking sounds, can most be understood as the sound a old LP-player makes when there is dust on the record. Not much but more than enough that I can hear it and wish it wasn't there. After some time of playing the songs sometimes was totally distorted by "disturbance" and it became impossible to even hear that there was a song there. Like when you are out of reception of a radio channel.

I did some research and upgraded to the wine1.2 with "custom" pulsaudio drivers. Then the total distortion was gone, but the, always present, plocking sound still was there. I have tested adjusting PCM volume, have some volume on mono, upgrading to newer pulsaudio drivers. The same problem is when ever my dear computer i producing sound. Spotify, firefox, rythmbox and mplayer. I can't see any answers after spending some time on google. I hoped i could fix this without deleting and removing pulsaudio.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Sound After Upgrade To 9.10 Karmic

Jan 8, 2010

The sound is an onboard Realtek AC97 chip on my motherboard. It worked absolutely fine on my 9.04 Jaunty setup. My machine is dual boot with Windows XP and the sound is fine on XP, so it's not a hardware issue. Karmic seems to think there is no audio device present at all, which is obviously not the case. This is an AMD 64-bit machine running the x64 edition, although I doubt that has anything to with the problem. Everthing else in the installation went perfectly and the GNOME desktop seems significantly quicker too.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Upgrade From 9.04 Jaunty To 9.10 Karmic

Mar 12, 2010

i used the Update Manager to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10.. then it said:

NO VALID MIRROR FOUND

While scanning your repository information no mirror entry for the upgrade was found. This can happen if you run a internal mirror or if the mirror information is out of date.

Do you want to rewrite your 'sources.list' file anyway? If you choose 'Yes' here it will update all 'jaunty' to 'karmic' entries. If you select 'No' the upgrade will cancel.

I choose yes, then is said that there's something wrong with the network I'm connected to..then it closes..the upgrade failed.

Ubuntu / Apple :: MBP 5,3: Upgrade From Karmic To Lucid?

Jun 21, 2010

I searched through a lot of threads on whether its safe to upgrade from a working Karmic install to Lucid via the upgrade manager. I found a few threads from around 1 month ago where some said it worked, others said they had problems with grub etc.

Does anyone know the current status of this? I would like to upgrade to Lucid but I don't know if its safe. Would it be better to use an install CD instead of the upgrade manager? Do I need to manually install grub rather than let the install program do it? (I think the upgrade manager doesn't give an option it just installs grub after the upgrade)

Ubuntu Installation :: PostgreSQL 8.3 Becomes Inaccessible With Upgrade To Karmic

Jan 13, 2010

When I recently upgraded my desktop to Karmic, my postgresql 8.3 no longer starts. I've got data in 8.3 that I need, but now no way to access it. Karmic upgrades to Postgresql 8.4, but leaves 8.3. Problem is, I can't seem to start 8.3 no matter what I do (there's no error message. I even tried removing 8.4 entirely--without effect. When I try to start 8.3 (using command line or boot-up manager), there is no error message, either in system logs or in the postgresql log file. There is also no indication of an active postmaster in ps aux or anything listening to postgresql ports in nmap (for that matter, seems there's nothing listening even with 8.4 activated).

I could try to 'upgrade' my data cluster to 8.4. Never tried that before and am concerned about possibly losing data. Also, I made a load of tuning adjustments to 8.3 that I'd have to replicate with 8.4. I'd rather stay with 8.3, if possible. There are also two pieces of software, postgresql-common and postgresql-client-common, that presumably allow one to run two versions of postgresql simultaneously. Maybe this stuff is even the source of my start up problems. No idea where to learn how to use this software, and, esp., whether this would solve the 8.3 start problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot After Karmic To Lucid Upgrade?

May 3, 2010

I made the mistake of trying to upgrade my Karmic (server) installation to Lucid earlier today, after which I've been unable to boot into my server. The server is on OVH, so I can't watch it boot, but I am able to access all of the data from the filesystems via rescue mode. I ran fsck and that came back clean. I also ran the boot info script, the results of which are below.

I know my best bet is to backup what I can and do a fresh install, but I won't be able to back everything up so trying to get this working would certainly be more convenient. I'm sure I'm leaving out useful information, so let me know and I'll post it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Via The Update Manager Using Karmic 9.10

May 6, 2010

I was so impressed by the screen-shots of 10.04 LTS that i wanted upgrade via the update manager( am using karmic 9.10).Everything went well with downloading the new packages till the point of installation of downloaded packages. Halfway through the installation power went off and when i restarted the system it was stuck at some point with the message

Code: mount: nothing to mount in /dev or something like that. Then i restarted the system in recovery mode and ran "dpkg" to fix broken packages hoping it would fix the issue. It did to some extent that i was type the problem here through the affected system.

The problem is i couldn't send the crash report the first time around and i can't get hold of it now.My system is somewhere between karmic and lucid ("About Ubuntu" shows as karmic and System Monitor shows it as lucid").So i how do i get a clean installation of lucid?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound After Karmic To Lucid Upgrade / Get That?

The title pretty much says it all, the sound on this system was working fine until I ran the upgrade to Lucid. I've tried everything in the standard troubleshooting guide, the sticky threads and plenty of forum searches but so far I've come up with nada. For some reason Ubuntu refuses to see my soundcard, no matter how much I twist and tweak it. It's an Asus M3A78 motherboard with an on-board Realtek ALC1200 chip (snd-hda-intel). Here's most of the relevant output, hopefully someone can easily spot what's going on because I'm getting snow-blind staring at the monitor. code...
