Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Boot Menu Hidden In Netbook Remix?

Jul 10, 2010

I installed Ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 and it ran fine. However, the boot menu is hidden and by default it always boots into Ubuntu (I don't know.. maybe the timeout was 0). I wanted to switch to a different kernel so I compiled a new kernel and installed it. But upon reboot it would always boot into the old kernel. So I updated grub and made the new kernel the default.

Now the new kernel is givine me a kernel panic and I can't access my system because the grub boot menu doesn't show anything (just boots into the newly compiled kernel and gives me a panic message). I don't have a recovery cd/usb. Is there a way for me to somehow slow grub down or show a menu? Pressing esc at boot doesn't help.

Ubuntu :: Hidden Folders In The Home Folder That Aren't Hidden?

May 6, 2010

just a general weirdness, but some folders that are in my /home folder don't show up. if i check "show hidden folders", they still don't show up. for all terms and purposes, they are simply not there. however, if i search for them through the search tool, or beagle, they show up as being in my /home folder. so, anyone have any idea how this happened, or how i can remedy this?

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 Search And Launch View - No Right-click Menu

Apr 4, 2011

I changed the kde desktop layout to Search and Launch on an 11.3 64-bit machine and lost the ability to bring up a right-click menu on the desktop, also tried it on an 11.3 32 bit machine and experienced the exact same thing how I can solve this even if it means reverting to the default layout? I suppose I could delete and re-create the user's /home but I'm wondering if there's a way to solve this without resorting to that On the one machine I've put 11.4 on so far it's using the search and launch layout with absolutely no problems at all and finding it very handy

the 11.4 machine I'm using this layout on actually logs onto the 11.3 64 bit machine I first had the problem with via nis and an nfs /home export For the user it's working fine under I set the search and launch layout from the 11.4 machine, the user I'm getting the problem with on the 64-bit machine (nis/nfs server) was set on the server itself. The 11.3 32 bit machine however, I disabled nis and nfs so that it would use local logons and /home only so it seems to be an issue with 11.3 itself and regardless of cpu architecture

Fedora :: Unable To View Folders (using Places Menu Item)?

Nov 16, 2010

I'm unable to open and view folders graphically. I click Places -> Home Folder (or any of the other folders, including Computer), and the cursor turns to the spinning "wait" dial, but the folder won't appear. A tab appears in the bottom panel, with the title "opening ZenBeam" (or "opening Desktop" or "Starting Computer", depending on which folder I tried to open) for a few seconds, but then goes away. Left- or Right-clicking on these tabs doesn't give me any options.

This used to work normally, but stopped suddenly a few days ago, following a reboot. I'm guessing it's become corrupted, but I don't know what "it" is. I can navigate in a command line window normally.I have rebooted, and I have run System -> Administration -> Software Update, but that didn't fix the problem.I was going to add the information in System -> About This Computer, but that seems to be having the same problem. What can I do to fix this? What application is failing to run?

Ubuntu :: Boot Checker Moved All Of Files To A Hidden Folder

Afterwards when I checked that folder I found that most of the files were intact and I was able to open them without a problem. How dumb is that a program moves files without your permition to do so So I'm wondering what happens with files on Ubuntu if they get corrupted or are suspected as corrupted? And how can I know if the automatic checking procedure that runs when booting found any corrupted files, bad sectors etc... ?

General :: Dual Boot Windoze+ubuntu W/ Truecrypt+hidden OS?

Jun 19, 2011

I am thinking of installing Ubuntu on my machine, and I may need to still keep windows 7 around for certain games/apps. I want to do a full disk encryption using Truecrypt. As I understand, Truecrypt is compatible with both linux/windows/OSX, and has an option for a "hidden operating system."I want to Install both win7 and ubuntu, with ubuntu as a hidden OS. I have watched tutorials on ..... showing the method for creating a hidden OS for Windows, in this tutorial the second volume was created from the first volume and was effectively a clone of the original OS. Basically what I am asking is---- Is it possible for a hidden volume with a bootable version of Ubuntu Linux to cohabitate on the same drive as windows? If so, are there any howto's/tutorials you could point me to?

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot - Acer Laptop Hidden Recovery Partition

Aug 17, 2010

I just got a new acer laptop that came loaded with Win 7, and I want to dual boot with Ubuntu. Naturally the laptop didn't come with a Win 7 disc, but instead has the stupid recovery partition. I've made the recovery DVDs from the eRecovery program but....

From what I read the acer recovery setup is extremely picky and will refuse to work after the partitions have been messed with. Apparently the ALT+F10 to start the recovery process on boot won't even work if acer's MBR is overwritten. What's worse, even the recovery DVDs won't work without the MBR! (At least from what I've been reading... I guess if you install a different HD you are SOL) So how does one get around this? I couldn't care less about acer's stupid recovery partition, but if I ever need to send the computer in for service I think they actually charge extra to restore their crap.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Get To Boot Up / Show Menu On Dual Boot With Vista Initially

Jan 18, 2010

Have just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine. But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months! The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again. The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

Is there a way to modify the grub.cfg file to stop this problem ( all posts say dont touch this file??Or install a script to delete the grubenv file on shutdown as a workaround for me, (I have no idea how to do this whatsoever, I'm not familiar with linux at all)I did read that this problem was fixed/patched in Grub version 2, but dosn't seem.so on my system afetr I updated it when I got into Ubuntu.I couldnt find the patch or fix, I got the information I am on about from this post:URL...It seems to say it was fixed or patched by Colin Watson reading through, but I don't really understand whats being said or how to get the patch on my system if indeed there is one?Sorry for being a bit thick about all this, its a bit beyond my brain now, hope somebody can help out as I have enjoyed my brief bit of fun in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: GRUB Boot Menu At The Start Like Any Other Dual-boot System?

Jan 28, 2011

I've installed Ubuntu on my new desktop alongside Windows 7 (each OS is on a separate drive), I seem to have run into a small problem. Let me start with what I did:

- Unplugged 1TB drive from the PSU, BIOS was not seeing my formatted (and thus empty) 500GB drive and I couldn't put it into the boot order at all with the 1TB turned on.

- Loaded up the boot CD and was able to install Ubuntu 10.1 on my 500GB drive.

- Did a bit of configuring, shut my PC off and plugged my 1TB (with Windows 7) drive back in. I tried to see if I could now see my Ubuntu drive in BIOS but nothing is there - just the Windows drive is in the list of available drives to boot from (along with DVD-ROM and USB).

This is where I've run into my problem. What I want is to have a nice GRUB boot menu at the start like any other dual-boot system but just have the two operating systems on separate drives altogether.I did it this way because I was having issues with the advanced partition menu on the boot CD so just went ahead and followed the KISS method by unplugging the Windows drive.

I was told by a friend that if I put my Ubuntu drive into the first position in my boot order and the Windows drive in the second, then I could boot into Ubuntu and run a GRUB update command (he told me to google it) and that would create the necessary GRUB that had the entries for Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Both operating systems are 64-bit, I imagine that might make a difference in whatever help you guys can offer me. I love the hell out of both OS's and want to be able to use them interchangeably.

Ubuntu :: Missing Grub And Dual Boot Menu - Windows Won't Boot

Jul 3, 2011

i am having a problem with my dual boot setup. I originally installed windows XP on a 100gb hard drive, from there i downloaded and burnt ubuntu off so i could install it on my 200gb hard drive. For a little bit i struggled to even get it to install because it wouldn't recognize my onboard nvidia graphics, i ended up having to get an alt boot disk and fix it with technique in this link:

[URL]

Now after the bios boot, my screen shuts off for awhile and takes me directly to the login screen for ubuntu. No Grub, no windows boot options, nothing. I tried booting windows by choosing it from the bios boot menu but all it does is hang at prompt and doesn't boot at all. I tried the live cd fix and reinstalled grub but nothing changed. What i think is happening is that it boots the Grub menu but it doesn't display it because of graphical confrontations. It hangs for about 10 seconds, the grub default time, and then turns my monitor back on to display the Ubuntu login screen.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot XP - 10.10 - Boot Screen Shows Up But Then Computer Restarts And Returns To The GRUB Menu

Dec 16, 2010

I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.

I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

And got this:

Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.

I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.
