Mar 5, 2010I'm using HP Pavilion dv2108tx I have ubuntu and Win7 dual boot. The problem is every time I change setting to the BIOS there will be a new list of ubuntu boot came up and now I scroll trough the whole list. Is there anyway to edit GURB boot list.

Jan 12, 2010I installed The latest and greatest Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and everything is clicking along just fine except one annoying feature that I am unable to get my finger on.I have quite a list of choices at bootup. I updated a couple version of the kernel and there is this memtest thing...twice... Then my family also uses windows 7 so that is the default at the bottom of the list set to boot after 3 seconds to keep the nagging to a minimum.
I would like to know the cleanest and safest way to have the list only show the current kernel option and the windows 7 option if this is even advised. Would it be best to have a backup (Previous kernel) in the list? *just in case* Is it safe to seek out the old kernel by version number and uninstall? Will this remove the entries in the list? Is editing the list and leaving other options installed wise? Is there a gui grub2 configuration tool with these advanced options? I have StartUp-Manager, but there is no options to change the list.
Im looking for the best/safest option to get this done because I now see another kernel update image in the update manager and it is going to increase the size of my list once I find the time to update. Im a bit green and scared I will ruin a good thing here. Everything is working perfectly so far and I realize one click and it could all be over.

Jan 15, 2011Firstly, I installed my Windows 7 on sda2; then, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on sda1. But the computer directly get into Ubuntu without listing the grub list. How to get the Grub list back and make sure the Widows 7 is on the list?

Sep 27, 2010I just installed Kubuntu 10.04 dual booted with Windows XP Home. It worked OK until I tried to reboot. Then, when the GRUB boot list came up, there was no response to the keyboard cursors or other keys, so I was unable to select any OS other than the default. Right now, I can't access Windows at all.
Any solution to this? One person suggested enabling USB in BIOS, but I found nothing relevant there. Another suggested I use a PS2 keyboard, which I did, but no change...same problem.
If I can't get a solution to that, how do I change the GRUB configuration to make Windows the default? 10.04 doesn't have the same kind of GRUB boot config file that I recall using the last time I worked with Kubuntu, way back around version 6 0r 8.

I want to delete "memtest" line, as I don't need it, and rename "Windows 7" line to, for example, "Windows 117". How can I do that? Where I should look and edit? In old grub it was enough to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, but in Ubuntu 10.04 there is no such file and other grub2-related files (like grub.cfg) do not contain this info to rename or delete lines. So, I can't figure out what to do.

I've spent a good part of a day doing google searches and reading thread after thread on this subject and I've tried all kinds of suggested ways of accomplishing it but as of yet I haven't had any success. I just switched to ubuntu from windows and I was able to do this in windows with a program that loaded at startup. Seeing as how linux is infinitely more customizable than windows I would assume this would be easy to do but I'm having no luck. So I went to list view, sorted that view by clicking on the type tab, then tried to drag the cursor over all the html items to select them, and NADA. couldn't do it. Is that a feature I have to enable?
I can do icon view drag and select, and yes, I could do it from the terminal with

Aug 11, 2009I am not much experienced with Linux systems and commands. I have been searching with Goggle and trying to solve. Today I had accidentally removed the boot grub menu list. There is a backup file. Now my system boots to >grub command. I have tried all sorts of things from live CD to boot the system I have tried Super Grub also. I am no able to go to the directory where the back up boot menu list is available and change the name from the live CD. Can any one help me with commands to go to the directory and rename the file for booting.

When an application uses it to save a document, it does not hang.I created a Templates folder and assigned it with the user-dirs.I then changed the view of that particular directory from LIST to ICONS.And then it started to hang up.Somehow I was able to change the view back to LIST, but it still hangs up.

In windows, you would set the preferred view and then apply to all folders. Ubuntu does not follow this paradigm, and indeed, why should it? I have searched the preferences in Ubuntu, and did a global search f this site for related topics. I know you have to be able to do this, I just don't know how. This is the type of topic I will probably kick myself for when someone shows me how easy it is to do. If you don't know how to do it though, it is still black magic.

I tried playing around with gtk-icon-sizes in the gtkrc file of my theme, but there doesn't seem to be a setting for it there. I could just zoom in/out, but when I have the icons the size I want them to be, the text is too small (see attachment).

Ubuntu :: Hide List View Expand/contract Icons?
Feb 7, 2011in my quest to reduce chrome and padding in Nautilus, I've come across something I can't seem to find on my own. I know there are 3 basic views - icons, list, and compact - and I prefer list; however, on the left of the list view, there is a 20-25px or so (depending on theme of course) of margin/padding/space on the left - reserved for the + or - or arrows indicating a folder can be expanded inline.
I would simply like to remove this space (and the cooresponding +/- icons). I realize this will relinquish my ability to expand folders inline - which is fine with me, I don't use the feature much anyway.I can probably surmise where the actual icons live, reverse engineering a theme or what have you... but I'm guessing that still won't change that space.
is there any way to get a more "vanilla" list view?UPDATE: while I don't think specs really matter to this question, here's what I'm running anyway:Ubuntu 10.10, 32bit in Gnome (default for that Ubu version) using mostly stock Nautilus besides it being the Elementary build (hidden menubar and such).

As it stands now, it won't work while in List view. Sadly, that's the only view I ever use, and so I always have the boring white background. I would love a brushed metal look or something.

Nov 23, 2010I don't know if this is a known issue, but when I want to copy/move a file to a folder containing lots of sub-folder displayed as list, I can't do a simple drag&drop, because there is no empty space to move this file. It will always go into one of the sub-folders. So obviously I have to go up one folder or to change view from list to Icon or Compact. Is it a known issue? Is there a solution? (Using GNOME nautilus 2.30.1)

Apr 27, 2010I already had ubuntu 32 bit version 9.10. but due to some tool compatibility reason I need even the 64 bit version 9.10. I dint want to delete 32 bit version so I wanted to install both on my system. I have windows vista as well.
So I booted with 64 bit version of Ubuntu, went on with the installation, until the point were it asks to choose the partition. 32 bit version had 16GB allocated and 10GB free. so I thought I will make new 8GB partition from the 10GB free space. So I selected the partition and clicked on change, and specified 8GB and ext4 format and mount point as "/". I clicked on continue and in a few seconds it popped up with an ERROR message, which I can't remember exactly, but it meant to say that it could not make the changes as the disk to which the changes were made is in use. So I should not use it until I reboot. So I rebooted and now I have grub error : file not found and grub rescue> prompt.
I tried to boot with the 64 bit CD again with the option of trying ubuntu without making any changes and it does show the 16 GB partition, but when I mount that partition I do not see any folders in the partition except for a folder named "lost+found". I try to view the contents of this and it says I do not have the permissions.

Nov 29, 2010i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

Dec 11, 2008I run opensuse 11 at work. I'm trying to see the list of shares on a "server" that is running windows server 2000. If I try smb://server, it doesn't show any shares, but I can browse directly to it such as smb://server/share1. If I use smbclient, it returns the list of shares correctly. I guess I just don't understand why smbclient shows the list of shared folders, but nautilus cannot.
