Ubuntu :: Hidden Folders In The Home Folder That Aren't Hidden?
May 6, 2010
just a general weirdness, but some folders that are in my /home folder don't show up. if i check "show hidden folders", they still don't show up. for all terms and purposes, they are simply not there. however, if i search for them through the search tool, or beagle, they show up as being in my /home folder. so, anyone have any idea how this happened, or how i can remedy this?

If someone manually partitions their home and root drives and overtime they end up with a lot of dot folders (.burgerspace for example) in their home directory. Is there a quick way to get rid of all the dot folders whose program is no longer installed? For example if I completely removed BurgerSpace in Synaptic, the .burgerspace folder would remain.

I am using evolution for my email client, and it shows me hidden files and folders in the folder tree. Basically, my email folder is in a unix folder on a system, and that system logs me into my folder when I try using evolution. The downside is that files like .bashrc, .bash_profile and other weird stuff end up in the foldertree view
See how the tree would show bashrc and .lynxrc? The folder "documents" shouldn't be showing either.Yeah, that's really annoying. It showing the contents of the $HOME folder that I login to.In thunderbird those things wouldn't show.It must be evolution specific.Anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?

How to move hidden folder from /home to another location - on another partition? Is it possible? I'd like to move some folders for example ./thunderbird or so that I wouldn't need to make a backup. Or at least is it possible that program can right files to two folders, or that everything from /home./thunderbird would copy automatically to ./thunderbird on another partition every time there is a change? Is it possible to write a script or something? I use luckybackup but I would like to be able to forget about backups and make script or program to do it for me.

I have an external HDD which i keep all my movies and tv shows and whatnot on. I rebooted my laptop routinely and when the HDD reconnected it still has the same amount of disc space used up but in my movie folder only 221/1186 movies are showing up in nautilus. I opened KDirStat to check and all the movies are still on the HDD nothing has been erased. I have restarted the laptop, restarted the HDD, disconnected/reconnected the HDD, swapped USB ports. I don't think it matters but I have written a .sh script that generates a list of all the folders contents and outputs it to a .txt file. Even though the HDD is only showing 221 files the txt output has all 1186. why 800 files would just not show up in nautilus explorer?
Currently running:
Ubuntu 9.10
Nautilus 1:2.28.10ubuntu3
EDIT: I can still access and play every file that is not showing up by opening them through a media player such as VLC. Also when i Alt+F2 and type the directory and file name they still fill themselves in as normal also.

Last time,I changed the icon for the ding-dictionary,it used the gear-wheel symbol before. The I saw, that the hidden directories also used the new icon, and now they are all gone Did install the old 256.53-NVIDIA-driver last night, but that should not be the reason ?

I had a minor disaster and lost a lot of data. I used PhotoRec to see what it could recover, it saved them to my home directory. 488 folders I cant do anything with as I don't have permission?? I set up root and gave myself admin power but still cant delete them. If I log in as root, where can I find my home folder so I can delete the majority of these folders. Most unfortunately have nothing of value in them.

Actually, Nautilus allows two instances of the same folder, or two folders with the same name in the same directory, as long as one is hidden (with the .prefix) and the other is shown. It happens that, if during a download (through a download manager or a torrent client) the user adds the . prefix to the download folder, another will be automatically created by the application (let's say Transmission for example) and the download would continue to that new folder. If any renaming happens (or if the original folder is restored), the download will resume to the folder with whichever initial name. Eventually, the user will be left with an unusable/corrupt complete download.

What, if any, significance is there to the following message shown in the rkhunter.log?
Code:
[21:11:58] Checking for hidden files and directories [ Warning ]
[21:11:58] Warning: Hidden directory found: /etc/.java
[21:11:58] Warning: Hidden directory found: /dev/.udev
[21:11:58] Warning: Hidden directory found: /dev/.initramfs
What need would there be for hidden directories to exist in /?

I recently moved to a new machine, and I copied my entire home folder across. This included lots of hidden (starting with '.') folders, and in many cases they are config folders for packages which I have not installed on the new machine. They are taking up space, so I would like to delete them, but to go through manually and figure out which ones I need would be very laborious. Is there a way to find, and perhaps delete, config folders for packages that are not installed?

Nautilis is very good at hiding or showing 'hidden' files and folders (names starting with .) but using any other program to save or open a file, I have to scroll through reams of hidden to my storage folders. Is there a way to make the save and open dialogs 'hide' the 'hidden' files? Is it different for different programs?

I've set up a ubuntu server at home with the intention of sharing files with windows clients, so I've installed samba. I have no security issues so I've allowed public access to the shares and I can access them fine from all windows machines. I also need to preserve the dos attributes for files and folders using 'map hidden', 'map system', 'map archive' which works great for files but not for folders. I've got a number of folders from my windows box which I would like to keep hidden (for tidiness more than anything) but when I transfer them to the samba share, they become visible again and I can seem to control their visibility at all from windows or from ubuntu. Do I take it from this that samba can only manage to maintain dos flags on files and not on directories?
This is the relevant part of the samba.conf file
Code:
[global]
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
passwd chat = *Entersnews*spassword:* %n
*Retypesnews*spassword:* %n
*passwordsupdatedssuccessfully* .
map hidden = yes .....
[media]
comment = Shared files
path = /usr/media

It then places the folder on the desktop. However if I use any application that works with the file system, I can never see that folder. I know the physical location of the SSH folder can be traced into Home folder -> .gvfs (it is a hidden folder). However I want the SSH folder to be easily accessible on the file system. Something very similar to "Expand Drive" or "SFTP drive" in windows.

I have a hidden folder with a lot of text files in it. I would like to search in this folder for all files containing a given text. The File Browser's" FIND searches only in the file names, not in their contents. The FIND function of Ubuntu does not allow me to search ONLY in the given hidden folder. So, how can I find my files within the hidden folder with the given text within them?

I have a sort of strange dilemma.I had all these files on my desktop and I wanted to put them in a hidden folder. I put them all in a folder, then renamed that folder ".desktop" and tried to hide/unhide it with ctrl+h. It didn't work. So I moved it to my home folder. Didn't work there either, and I accidentally deleted it. Moved it out of the trash and back onto the desktop, but now it's no longer a folder. Now it's a file. I can't open it, since when I do, it says "Cannot display .desktop [return] The file is of an unknown type.

Not sure what the problem is, but my home directory or /home partition is acting up so that I cannot see the hidden directories in my home directory.
If I type "ls" I get the display of all my files and directories.
If I type "ls -l" I get the display of files and directories.
If I type "ls -a" or "ls -la", the terminal hangs.
Any thoughts? I have tried creating myself a new account and moved all my files over, then changed the ownerships to the new account. However, now the new account is acting the same way.

I had bad experience with disk checking in windows. Boot checker just moved all more and more of my files to a hidden folder without me knowing. I lost a lot of photos due to this. Afterwards when I checked that folder I found that most of the files were intact and I was able to open them without a problem. How dumb is that a program moves files without your permition to do so So I'm wondering what happens with files on Ubuntu if they get corrupted or are suspected as corrupted? And how can I know if the automatic checking procedure that runs when booting found any corrupted files, bad sectors etc... ?

Just got my VPS provisioned with ubuntu9.04 (64bit) and am trying to get it configured correctly. Part of that means I need sendmail. I've been using aptitude to install software but sendmail is nowhere to be found. Even running 'aptitude install sendmail' results in nothing but "No candidate version found for sendmail". Similar for apt-get.
Suggestions for where to go from here? I wonder what other software might be hidden or not available?
