View 4 Repliesjust a general weirdness, but some folders that are in my /home folder don't show up. if i check "show hidden folders", they still don't show up. for all terms and purposes, they are simply not there. however, if i search for them through the search tool, or beagle, they show up as being in my /home folder. so, anyone have any idea how this happened, or how i can remedy this?

I surely installed linux (now on opensuse 11.4) as quickly as possible. mounting this hidden recovery partition under linux? All I can see is this from "fdisk -l"printout:

I am running an Opensuse 11.2 system as a backup file server. Several external hard drives are attached via USB and mounted during boot via the fstab file. Recently, I noticed the df command showed the root partition being >65% full, while the du command showed the same drive was only about 20% full. After much investigation, I discovered that some large directories had been created under the /media folder on the root partition that were hidden when the external drives were mounted as directories with the same names under /media. I could only see this when I rebooted with a live CD and mounted the suspect partition without the external drives mounted. Is there a way to examine whether a mounted partition has existing files "hidden" when a separate file system is mounted "on top of it"?

For some reason after I delete files from it it still shows up as full and the files are shown in the hidden trash files. How do I get rid of these files? I can't delete them as they just show back up. Also, I tried to format the drive with gparted and it won't unmount. When I right click and select information, at the bottom it says: Unable to find mount point. Unable to read the contents of the file system. Because of this, some operations may be unavailable.

The password prompt is displayed but no chars are echoed in the password field. when you click Login, it displays "Authentication failure" in the window. The logged messages in the /var/log/messages for the gdm-greeter are:

The directories
/home/<user_name>/.Trash
and

do not exist.
I've tried viewing hidden directories with nautilus and using "cd" in terminal. "locate" is equally useless.

I want to copy all directories, files, and hidden files and hidden directories with one command. I want these items to replace any same items in the target directory.
I have tried several things, such as:
cp -r *
cp -aR *
but I only seem to get visible files and directories. Obviously, I am missing something. (A brain, probably....)
Installed 11.2 last night with KDE4. Using "Connect to other network" I could see all the private networks around, including my own.
Mine has an hidden SSID and WPA2-PSK security. Regardless of what I tried I couldn't connect. Both BSSID and password are correct (but there was no other choice than "WPA/WPA2 personal" under security).
So I go to work today and connect to an unsecure network with a visible SSID (and a lower signal quality) without any problems.
Summary of issue: You cannot connect to a wireless network with a hidden ssid, while using knetworkmanager.This leaves you with the choice of using ifup, yast which uses ifup but provides a gui for new users, etc. But thanks to glistwan helpful post there is a simple way to fix this issue, while continuing to use knetworkmanager.Step 1 Get the wireless name of the hidden network, for example we will be looking for "Tree".Tree is not on the list of courseStep 2 Open the Terminal and enter super user mode.

I have a strange problem: Due to my small monitor I have set the gnome panels on top and bottom to auto hide. After installing the nvidia drivers the panels do not appear if I go to the edges with my mouse. If I switch the resolution to VGA (640x480) however, the panels appear again, but not at top/ bottom but in the middle of the screen.

I've installed Ubuntu once before, but it was a while ago so I don't remember the details. Also, I'm not entirely sure how to work Truecrypt as I've never used it before. Do I install Ubuntu first and then run Truecrypt, if so, how do I deal with the fact that installing Ubuntu involves many partitions. Does Truecrypt recognize this automatically or do I have to somehow encrypt them all?

Repeated runs of unhide with the system in various states continued to show the process,but with a different PID each time.(Or maybe it was spawning new processes and killing itself every second or so. A newer version of unhide,which I compile from source, did describe the process as "maybe transient" or omesuch. But how do you process all the hidden files like:

What is the equivalent of *.bak for only the hidden files?

Thus, when I minimize a window it "disappears." I can find it and kill it by PID using "ps aux | grep xyz" but sometimes I want to run it (in particular, rhythmbox audio player) again. Is there any way to A) get a real window switcher onto my taskbar, or B is there a way to maximize a window by PID?

I've been using aptitude to install software but sendmail is nowhere to be found. Even running 'aptitude install sendmail' results in nothing but "No candidate version found for sendmail". Similar for apt-get.
Suggestions for where to go from here? I wonder what other software might be hidden or not available?

I did some unfortunate dragging I think and now most of my windows which were open before are not there anymore. When I go to processes, I can see that they are still there. E.g. I had a terminal window open and now the window is gone but I can still see a bash process in the list

I used PhotoRec to see what it could recover, it saved them to my home directory. 488 folders I cant do anything with as I don't have permission?? I set up root and gave myself admin power but still cant delete them. If I log in as root, where can I find my home folder so I can delete the majority of these folders. Most unfortunately have nothing of value in them.

I'm having trouble with a fresh install of 10.4 Lucid Lynx on an old Pentium III desktop that was working fine with a previous release of Ubuntu. The problem started after an upgrade to 10.4, persisted after doing a clean install from CD, and is still there after installing all recommended updates.
The symptom is that after login, neither the top nor the bottom gnome panels are displayed. I can right-click on the desktop and get the desktop menu, and I can type Alt-F1 and get the left-hand launcher menus, though the top panel still does not display.
The problem does not always occur, but nearly always. The first login to a newly created account will often show the panels, but in subsequent logins the panels are hidden.
If I login in Failsafe GNOME mode, the panels will appear.
I can fix the problem for a given login session by opening gconf-editor, editing /apps/panels/toplevels/top_panel_screen0, and toggling auto_hide on and then off again. If I log out and back in again, the problem recurs. The problem is that I'm trying to set up this computer for some very naive users, so this kind of workaround isn't really practical.
I'm not sure if it matters, but in the Appearance preferences, visual effects are set to "none".

Also, it does tend to get in the way a bit, such as obscuring my options button in Chrome, rather than just taking up a bit of unused space on my tabs bar.
