Ubuntu Installation :: Not Installing/working \ Boot Menu, It Shows Some Dialog, Then Just Blank?

Aug 29, 2010

I tried Wubi, and all is fine, but when I choose Ubuntu on the boot menu, it shows some dialog, then just blank. its stays blank forever, so I had to shut the computer off. Then, I burned the Ubuntu iso to a CD and botted from it at startup. This at least showed the purpl-ish install screen. After I pressed enter over install, it went to the blank screen again. just black, nothing appeared.I'm not sure what the problem is. My laptop is fairly new, it shouldnt be having an issue to run it.I have 4Gb RAM, plenty of space on the hard drive, and a 1Gb video card...I have no clue what to do, as this is my first encounter with an Linux distro ever. help?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Boot Menu Hidden In Netbook Remix?

Jul 10, 2010

I installed Ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 and it ran fine. However, the boot menu is hidden and by default it always boots into Ubuntu (I don't know.. maybe the timeout was 0). I wanted to switch to a different kernel so I compiled a new kernel and installed it. But upon reboot it would always boot into the old kernel. So I updated grub and made the new kernel the default.

Now the new kernel is givine me a kernel panic and I can't access my system because the grub boot menu doesn't show anything (just boots into the newly compiled kernel and gives me a panic message). I don't have a recovery cd/usb. Is there a way for me to somehow slow grub down or show a menu? Pressing esc at boot doesn't help.

I have tried several times, though, to download the XP disc to the virtualbox and I keep getting an error message that says it needs 32 bits. I found the display properties box and changed it from 16 to 32, also restarted the computer.I am still getting a wrong machine message with this error message about 16 bit. What am I missing?

Programming :: Using "dialog " To Generate Menu Base On Dir Contents

Oct 20, 2010

I'm just messing around trying to create a script that will give me a menu driven method of selecting a file from a directory. After doing some searching around on the web, I found that the "dialog" command might be able to provide what I need, but I'm not sure exactly if what I want is possible.

I was messing around with the --menu option and am getting pretty close, but not exactly what I want. Here's a snip of what I've been working with:

Code:

This gets me the results I want for the first option in the list, but the rest comes out a bit weird, as it's taking the directory contents and applying to the "tag" field as well. In fact, if there wasn't a need for the tag field, it would probably be working exactly as I want it to.

I plan on messing around a bit more to see if there is a workaround, but figured I'd post this just in case someone else had accomplished something similar. Essentially, this will be embedded in a script where each file in my $DIR variable will show in the menu and the selected file will end up in a variable for later use.

Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Hidden Partition And GRUB

Feb 18, 2010

I was installing Ubuntu on my new laptop (with plans to dual boot with Win 7) and, I'll admit, I did something stupid. You see, there was a 1 meg free space before the Windows 7 'hidden partition' and it was driving me nuts. So, what I did, was use gparted to move the hidden partition to the start of the drive (yes, a 1 meg move). Install of Ubuntu went off without a hitch, but after reboot things went a bit differently. The Recovery partition shows up as a possible boot partition in GRUB, in Windows 7 I can now see the recovery partition as a normal NTFS drive, and I can no longer use the features that the partition gives. I know this might be more of a 'ask on a Windows forum' question, but I was hoping someone else had done something like this and knew how to restore the hidden partition to being, well, hidden.

Ubuntu Servers :: Maintaining Hidden Windows Folders With Samba

Sep 1, 2011

I've set up a ubuntu server at home with the intention of sharing files with windows clients, so I've installed samba. I have no security issues so I've allowed public access to the shares and I can access them fine from all windows machines. I also need to preserve the dos attributes for files and folders using 'map hidden', 'map system', 'map archive' which works great for files but not for folders. I've got a number of folders from my windows box which I would like to keep hidden (for tidiness more than anything) but when I transfer them to the samba share, they become visible again and I can seem to control their visibility at all from windows or from ubuntu. Do I take it from this that samba can only manage to maintain dos flags on files and not on directories?

This is the relevant part of the samba.conf file
Code:

[global]
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
passwd chat = *Entersnews*spassword:* %n
*Retypesnews*spassword:* %n
*passwordsupdatedssuccessfully* .
map hidden = yes .....

[media]
comment = Shared files
path = /usr/media

On Windows API there's a function to do that (CreateFile), then I was trying to find a compatible function to set the hidden attribute, but there's no success until now.Could someone show me the way? Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Won't Boot - Displays Windows Logo And Then Drops Back To The Grub Menu

Now when I try to boot into Windows, it displays the Windows logo and then drops back to the grub menu. It may have started happening after Windows 7 installed updates. I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Does anyone have any suggestions about what may be causing this or how I can fix the problem without reinstalling?

Ubuntu :: Modify Menu.lst From Windows?

Apr 22, 2010

I would like to be able to change which OS is the default for grub to boot, and I would like to be able to do so easily from either Ubuntu or Windows. I suspect that this may be possible if I put /boot on an ntfs or FAT32 partition (though I do not wish to install Ubuntu itself on such a partition). There I would put multiple versions of menu.lst specifying different defaults. Then, before a restart, I can run a script which will copy, as the 'true' menu.lst, the one which specifies the desired default for my next boot.

Is this possible? If so, what do I need to worry about? (I must admit that it is unclear to me how the code in the MBR even finds the correct menu.lst.)

There is a thing I have worried about with a dual booted system and which I suspect I do not need to worry about. However, I would like to be reassured. I have ntfs partitions and removable drives which both Windows and Ubuntu can access. If a crash occurs which leaves a drive "dirty" (e.g., after a power fail), I am assured that if I reboot the OS in which the crash occurred, it will realize that the drive is "dirty" and will take measures to assure that no corruption will ensue. However, I am not so sure about the correct response if the next OS I boot is different from the one that crashed. I think Ubuntu and Windows both use the same convention for noting that a drive is "dirty", in which case I am worrying about nothing.

The relevance of the above worry in this menu.lst context is that, if it is important to reboot the same OS after a crash, then I would also include for each OS on _startup_ a script that would make itself be the default for a next boot.

Ubuntu :: Black Menu / Windows Bug

May 3, 2010

I m relatively new to Ubuntu and although I am very aducuate with computers it self (technology studie; modding, scripting and programming) I found a truly atrocious bug that ****s up Gnome (I assume). Here is a screenshot: [URL] The install is from one month ago, and since then i upgrades to 10.04. I never did any unusual stuff as far as I know. I added a few private repositoryś (playdeb, Virtualbox and some PPA?s) and configurated Compiz so it?s good to impress my class mates. This all is installed on a HP Pavilion DV6 with a Ati Graphics card and proprietary drivers.

it's some very simple thing that you can spell out for me cause I'm not in a great deal of time fixing this ****. Considering I nead this PC for school: it must work. Booting in windows would be a sign of weakness towards my classmates and it's no good advertising for linux in general.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Boot Windows From GRUB Menu

Jun 6, 2010

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 recently and now have MBR problem. When selecting Windows XP from the GRUB menu the screen defaults to terminal mode with grub rescue> displayed. I admit I know little to nothing about Ubuntu, unix, etc other than I like what I have seen so far and am trying to learn more. I need to (unfortunately) use Windows and have data on it that I can't afford to lose. How can I repair the problem so I can boot Windows from the menu? Thank you

P.S. I was dual booting successfully earlier. I had the previous version of Ubuntu running with Win XP and everything was fine. The problem started when I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. I have tried reinstalling 10.04 with no success. If I am unable to get dual boot working my wish would be to save my Win data and then I can wipe clean and reinstall Win and Linux.
