Ubuntu :: Use Nvidia Chip In Eee Pc 1215n?

Oct 10, 2010

Is there a way to use my nvidia chip in my eee pc 1215n?

It has an integrated graphic card and a discrete card (nvidia). I don't care about battery but I'd just want to use nvidia chip.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting On An Eee PC 1215n

Sep 19, 2010

I got the Eee PC 1215n specifically because it was cheap, good on battery life, and came with Windows 7 Home Premium. My old laptop, which recently died, had just Ubuntu on it, and I had few complaints. However, there were those few times that I really wanted the ability to switch to Windows.

I'm running the Live ISO from USB, and I'm at the partition manager section of the install. In the past, I remember there being an option where Ubuntu would specifically keep your old OS and settings intact, and you would just resize Ubuntu to the size that you needed it. However, my only options right now are to either use the entire disc or partition it manually, which I'm not as comfortable with since I don't know if I'll be able to get this computer back to the way it was before without having a disc drive, an install disc for Windows 7, and a serial key. The partition table reads as such:

/dev/sda1, Windows 7 (loader), 107.4 GB
/dev/sda2, Windows Vista (loader), 16.1 GB
/dev/sda3, [no label], 126.6 GB
/dev/sda4, [no label, but I assume this is the boot sector or something], 21.2 MB

I consider myself to be rather tech savvy (senior computer science major), but I can't exactly just dive in and re-partition my drive not knowing what anything is. If I had to guess though, I'd assume that sda3 is the main storage partition, and that would be the one that I could resize, and then I could install Ubuntu on the 30 or so GB that I free up there. Could I get some other input on this before I risk messing with my system? I don't want to brick this little laptop, but Ubuntu is so much more energy efficient than Windows (not to mention running on a more organized infrastructure and interface) that I'd really like to get it installed.

OpenSUSE :: Run X Without Using Graphics Chip?

Is it possible to do this? I'm just thinking maybe I can run KDE without using the GPU so that I can use the GPU for computation (CUDA). The system I'm thinking of using is a laptop with Nvidia GTX260M video card. I've seen people talk about frame buffer, but I don't quite understand it because it seems that some people are talking about using frame buffer even when they have a video card on their system.

Ubuntu Installation :: How Do I Find Out Details About Graphics Chip

Apr 23, 2010

I'm trying to get 9.10 to work nicely on a Thinkpad Edge 14".Everything is working fine, except that I have issues with the intel graphics drivers. The monitor's native resolution is 1366x768 and I have Intel HD graphics card on it.I have changed my xorg.conf to use driver = "vesa", but now I get only a resolution of 1024x768.I tried to use xrandr to fix this, by adding a new mode etcetera, but this does not work - I believe because the driver is the issue. Also, doing Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6] gives me a blank screen rather than a console.

How do I find out the details about my graphics chip? Intel Corporation Arrandale Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 12)Maybe I should go more bleeding edge for my drivers? How do I do that?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Via HDMI But Not Via MB Audio Chip

Nov 6, 2010

Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and I have a problem with it.

I have a motherboard with internal audio card as well as I have ATI 2600 card. When I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 sound via motherboard worked perfectly.

But some time later it disappeared. Actually "Output device" that represents audio card disappeared. See screenshot of the Audio Settings dialog.

I made 2 thing - most likely that one of them cause this problem:
- I tried to setup Panasonic Plasma TV as a second monitor via HDMI output of my video card (ATI 2600).
- I added maven-backports repository (new kernel or new audio driver?)

Have anybody seen this problem? Are any pointers how to fix it? If you need any additional info - let me know I'll be glad to provide it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Possible To Replace Mobo / Chip Or RAM Without Reinstall?

Jul 28, 2011

I have 10.04 LTS installed onto an SSD and have a spinning disk for crud, and my brother wants to give me his old GA-PH67A-UD3 and 8GB of RAM if I buy an i7 2600 to put in it. The thing is, I'm happy with my GA-965P-DS3 with Q6600, so I don't actually need an upgrade. So, can I get away with replacing the mobo, chip, and RAM and putting the SSD in the equivalent SATA port on the new mobo (/dev/sda), and will it cope? Will the kernel detect a new board and chip and carry on accordingly? I'll have to remount my crud drive to the same mount point it expects, and if my user account as the same UID as the old system, I'm hoping that might cope, too. Of course, I might be suggesting complete evil, and if this was Windows, I wouldn't even dare think about it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Linux might cope with this kind of change where Windows would fall over in a heap.

Ubuntu :: Save Data From Laptop With Broken Graphical Chip?

Aug 19, 2011

I have here a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop with Windows Vista on it. The graphical chip of this laptop is damaged in such a way that during boot I can see texts but once the GUI starts it is over. No more picture. This happens with Vista, but also when I boot a live-cd from Ubuntu. The owner of this laptop, not me, wants to buy a new one but would like all data to be saved.I have downloaded the server version of Ubuntu 10.04 (so I stay in text mode) and with the CD I can boot into restore mode. There it is possible to mount the internal hard-disk, after which I can see the data.

But... how do I get it from the disc? How do I setup the network, which I believe is running already, to make the laptop a part of my home network? Now from other computers I can't see this laptop, and I have no idea how to see my computers from this laptop.Or is it possible to burn a CD/DVD in Restore mode. If so how do I do that?

General :: What Kind Of Chip To Use For Underwater Robotics

Jul 5, 2010

I have no experience with embedded systems hardware and am looking to build a micro-budget underwater robot for exploring the bottom of a lake on the family homestead. I don't have much money to spend on this, but I want to run Debian Linux (I have lots of Linux Admin experience and am right at home with a terminal) or something like that on a small chip which needs to be able to:

Connect to the control computer via ethernet. Get digital or analog data from a GPS module, pressure sensor, etc. Control a few thrusters. Do various other hardware IO functions. Possibly control a robotic arm (this is a long shot, I know). And costs less than about 100 dollars. I have no experience with embedded systems hardware so I really don't know what to buy or where to start, aside from the fact that I heard that this would be a good place for something ARM-related. I am a software developer with time to burn as far as writing the programs to support this goes.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 RNX-N250PC Ralink Chip RT3062 Driver Install

Nov 3, 2010

I'm trying to get a Rosewill RNX-N250PC wireless card w/ ralink rt3062 chip to work in a new build. I am able to see the card in Device Manager, but can't get the driver to work despite trying many of the suggestions I've read elsewhere. I installed build-essentials and downloaded the driver from ralink. I unzipped the folder, and started to follow README as well as this thread rt3062 [URL]. So, I've adjusted MODE and TARGET as instructed in Makefile. I also adjusted the following sections of red text from Makefile:

ifeq ($(PLATFORM),PC)
# Linux 2.6
LINUX_SRC = /lib/modules/$(2.6.35-22-generic)/build
# Linux 2.4 Change to your local setting
#LINUX_SRC = /usr/src/linux-2.4
LINUX_SRC_MODULE = /lib/modules/$(2.6.35-22-generic)/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
CROSS_COMPILE =
endif

Then I set HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y and HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y in /os/linux/config.mk in the driver folder.
Then I code: $ make (also tried sudo make with same result)
and get:
make -C tools

OpenSUSE Install :: How Comes Centos Has Drivers For Raid Chip

Feb 3, 2011

I have got a server which has a motherboard with nvidia mediashield raid built in, with Centos installed it picked up the raid 5 array that i had configured as one drive so the os install was straight forward. When i booted the netinstaller of opensuse 11.3 run though the setup, when getting to the partition setup is was picking up the three hdd as seperate drives and not one, so i got to a certain point and aborted the installation and i re run the installer, the raid status said the array was degarded or something which i knew there was nothing wrong with it as i had set it up only about 2 weeks ago and there was one drive missing aswell. So i removed the array and re configured the array and rebooted and the raid status said healthy again as it was before on centos, then i run the opensuse installer again and it went though the process again but completely stop at "Searching for linux partitions" , cursor was working fine , but nothing else was so i had to press reset.

This was my problem, i know kind of what the problem is, but what i want to know is , i thought opensuse is based on rhel same as centos but how comes centos has the drivers for the raid chip i have in my board and opensuse has not.

Hardware :: Software Mixing - Audio Chip VT1708S

Oct 19, 2010

Starting over, based on this thread: [URL] And my problem which is the same! I have the same audio chipset and experienced the same issues. I hope there is nothing about that chip. I tried with XFCE4 on Slackware 13.1 and now KDE4 on Debian, I found a workaround on XFCE by installing gstreamer and using it instead of xine as the phonon backend. That workaround apparently doesn't work on KDE.

Something interesting (also in the original thread): Software mixing through alsa DOES work since I can play several files in aplay (command line) or xine (gui standalone) simultaneously. I don't have another soundcard. Should I install pulseaudio anyway? Switching to OSS ?
