is it possible to use a terminal to install/run currently installed WINE apps...? if so, please let me know how to do so, i'm trying to run my guild wars game client, and its saying that the program doesn't have sufficient priveleges to run...

What should I do to clear WINE state in my system if it's already flooded with installed Win apps and lots of registry configs? Like WINE has just been installed and nothing more. No Windows apps, no configurations were made, clear registry, etc... Is it enough just to delete "~/.wine"?

Last time I tried this it worked fine but that was a couple of years ago (see this thread if you're interested). The closest I've got so far is to install a CLI system from the alternate install CD and then run:

The problem is that one of these packages (I think that it's gnome-core) installs Epiphany, Evince, Evolution, Gwibber and Ubuntu One which I don't want. how to get a minimal system installed without these apps?
I am currently using Ubuntu 10.10 and am wanting to switch to Fedora 14. I have always loved the way Fedora looked and felt. So I am finally making the transition. But I am wondering does Wine work well with Fedora 14? If so how do I install through the terminal. I know it is the harder way but I find it gives me more customization. I prefer it, so what would the command be? With Ubuntu it is sudo apt-get install wine1.2 what is it in Fedora?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am new to fedora and installed wine to see if I could get the sony reader software working (required to access sony bookstore from my sony ereader). Well the program did not work though it did create icons on my desktop. wine kept crashing and I said lets just get rid of it. I uninstalled wine via yum remove and nothing appeared to happen so I did rpm -qa |grep wine and saw lots of stuff. So I simply did yum remove wine* and then a rpm -qa |grep wine was empty. however wine is still under applications on my desktop and still has a category for programs--reader. I should also mention that while wine was installed I attempted to remove the reader via the wine uninstalller but a) wine gave a message of a core crash and b) all the uninstaller did was give me the option to reinstall the reader program. so now when I attempt to open an epub it tries with the sony reader software. I know I can just right click to use another program but for now I want wine gone completely from my pc and the sony program gone.

They don't crash, they're just impossible to reach as they're no longer in task manager, they don't show up through alt-tab but I can see them if I run ps -x from a terminal. I tried with mIRC and the client is still responding, it'll still accept files with auto-get on so it's working fine, but the UI is gone

This is very old, and probably very out of date. I also had trouble following the examples. In any case I don't have anything called winerc or wine.conf. I just have a .wine directory.
Supposedly I should have registry keys for printers in Wine, so I looked where those are supposed to be. I have two keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetContro lPrintPrinters: (Default) and DefaultSpoolDirectory. Perhaps if I added the right key here I could get Wine to notice CUPS? I wouldn't begin to know what to put though.

It also says that if it doesn't work with CUPS it falls back to look in /etc/printcap. I have one of those, but it doesn't contain anything except the default comment telling me not to edit the file. Maybe if there's a way to regenerate /etc/printcap to contain the printers that show up in KDE, Wine would notice. Again, I have no clue how to do that.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 x64, and I'm using Wine 1.2, not Wine 1.0. All my packages are completely up to date.
I got tired of having to boot in Windows XP to run a couple of apps that don't run in Wine. I've heard a bout a virtual machine, virtualbox and all of that. Sorry, I need a crash course. What do I need to download/install? Do I need a WXP live CD or something like that?

But there are also some that wine users claim to have made run by changing some specific configuration of wine, using some trick or even creating scripts on playonlinux.
So if I try to run an app on wine and it doesn't and I don't find any user documentation about some specific trick or config for that app what adjustments can I do to try to make it run? I mean, it's tiring and perhaps foolish to spend hours playing with every possible config in wine frontend without knowing what I'm doing. So what can I do to find out what libraries, configs, tricks or scripts are needeed to make an app run under wine if it didn't at the first try?
I am do not know what to type in the terminal to get a list of installed programs and their versions.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit, installed wine, and found that a 32-bit Windows program (Agent newsreader) could not see the linux system fonts. (This worked fine on Kubuntu 14.04)
Since this is the first time that I've installed Debian, I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious or if this is an actual bug.
Steps to reproduce:
Fresh install of Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit.
apt-get install wine
wine wordpad # this is a small word-processor for wine that is supplied with wine
menu -> format -> font
all linux fonts are visible -- so far so good
Because I want to use a 32bit program, I now have to do this, I understand:
dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update
apt-get install wine-bin:i386
But after that,if I run "wine wordpad" and look at the fonts, all the linux system fonts are gone. The only fonts visible are the nine that are built into wine (Courier, Fixedsys, Marlett etc..) So installing the i386 wine support seems to have broken something.
I'm somewhat knew to Linux (CentOS), so WINE is completely foreign to me also. I'm immediately interested in TaxAct, which is how I learned about WINE. My question is whether my system will maintain the same stability that Linux is known for, and whether my CentOS build will keep it's current RHEL integrity after I install WINE, and probably other Windows Apps. Your experience with WINE is coveted.

View 3 Replies View RelatedOne of the first things I do when starting Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) is to open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T) with three tabs in it (ctrl-shift-T, ctrl-shift-T), one with irssi, one with ipython and one extra with just the commandline. Then I set the titles (F2) of the first two respectively to "irssi" and "ipython".Is there some way to write a script that automatically does all this? View 3 Replies View RelatedProblem with use of -hold|+hold on rxvt-unicode (urxvt) v9.09 on ubuntu server. On startup, I'm trying to launch terminal apps in urxvt automatically. E.g:

However, -|+hold does not seem to hold the terminal open. There is a flicker of a new window opening & then it's gone. I'm trying to invoke this from .xinitrc (startx-->.xinitrc) and also tried commands from inside awesome wm rc.lua (awful.util.spawn_with_shell("urxvt -hold -e mutt") seem to get same flicker result but closes immediately. I see this error in .xsession-errors, which might be relevant (do I perhaps need to specify the display??).

I'm not sure what happened but installing Adobe Air in Debian is like installing in Windows XP -- I used the .bin file instead of the .deb because the .deb say's Adobe Air is 32 bit application.
So it is installed (sucessful or not I still don't know) -=- I go to tweetdeck site and got to its desktop page where there should be an install button -- however, there aren't any or it wont show -- it partially show like a running circle but it's not running. Then when I click on it -- it disappears.
I tried installing other air app like livebrush but the same -- the button is not shown. My Sid is updated as of now. I also have google chrome browser -- the behavior is the same as with iceweasel v3.5.10
Is there a way to list all the apps I have installed?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.
Is there a way to run graphical apps as su without launching from the terminal? For example is there a way to open File Browser as su? And if the only way is via the terminal, then how can I find out the names of apps like the File Browser so I can launch them?
