How to make a backup of installed applications?
In the answer there was some program which would create a file listing all installed apps and store it in /home. On updating the OS or re-installing, the file would be used to re-install all apps listed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to add applications to my "Startup Applications" menu. Most of the time, they "stick," but sometimes simply disappear, either immediately or after a variable length of time (sometimes more or less immediately, sometimes after several restarts, or anywhere in between). I've noticed that, when they stop booting, their entry disappears from ~/.config/autostart, but changing permissions on the affected files (e.g., removing write access) doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestions? Re-adding the same things over and over gets frustrating after a while, and I can't figure out why these entries are disappearing.Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 with an Intel Centrino Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM.
I downloaded rpm so far but my only problem is I don't know what apps there are for it?

They're just not their, either for open or hidden apps!All I can think of that I've done since the new install is I did download gconf-editor and possibly opened it once, but I made no intentional changes.

I'm formatting my laptop and I wanted to back up the list of PPAs I have installed as well as my list of applications currently installed. Problem is, it's a long list and I don't want to be stuck writing them all down.On another note, how's everyones Unity experience going? EDIT: I found a tutorial that let's you do this, but it's a bit dated and doesn't work any more. Anyone know a fix for it?

I'm not sure what happened but installing Adobe Air in Debian is like installing in Windows XP -- I used the .bin file instead of the .deb because the .deb say's Adobe Air is 32 bit application.
So it is installed (sucessful or not I still don't know) -=- I go to tweetdeck site and got to its desktop page where there should be an install button -- however, there aren't any or it wont show -- it partially show like a running circle but it's not running. Then when I click on it -- it disappears.
I tried installing other air app like livebrush but the same -- the button is not shown. My Sid is updated as of now. I also have google chrome browser -- the behavior is the same as with iceweasel v3.5.10
I am looking for a default, or starting "exclude list" for system backups. We are currently using Symantec Backup Exec, but I also do not think that is important to this question. I would think that the Oracle "lock" files and the /var/run/*.pid files can be excluded from the backup, and probably the dell file also. Can some provide a list of files/directories that can be excluded (from backup) for RHEL 5?

Last time I tried this it worked fine but that was a couple of years ago (see this thread if you're interested). The closest I've got so far is to install a CLI system from the alternate install CD and then run:

The problem is that one of these packages (I think that it's gnome-core) installs Epiphany, Evince, Evolution, Gwibber and Ubuntu One which I don't want. how to get a minimal system installed without these apps?

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor absolutely no reason, I reinstalled my Ubuntu. Its not a wubi installation; but a full installation. It didnt cause any problem like old xp days. I just reinstalled because I tried too many themes on that and the system appeared jammed. I could fix it; but I thought a plain reinstallation would be much less difficultNow the problem is, after reinstallation, I have to install all software such as VLC, GIMP, and plugins for mp3 and video codecs. I did know that I would have to download them again. And I will download them shortly. But I want to know is there any way I can preserve the installer of those applications and plugins to use after a fresh reinstallation or upgrade to latest version (say 10.10 for example)?
Also, I want to back up all the system updates through update manager so that I am not asked to update (by downloading 200+ MBs) after fresh reinstallation.Please note that my internet connection is very slow and its bandwidth is limited to 3GB per month. I can buy more space but you know its costly here. That why I want a way to back up all the software, plugins and application installers for further use. I have DVD writer on my machine so if I have to write a disk Im capable.
Every time I install ubuntu I have to reinstall all the software from the software center and so. Now I already installed all software I need for this moment. Is there a way to take source files of those (installed) packages and save them some where else in order to reinstall them if i needed next time without need to INTERNET connection ???
Another question I wanna know about: How can I take a backup of my system as whole in order to get back to it if some problem happened. I used to use Acronis True Image and its alternatives to make a disk image. Is there is some thing similar in linux ?? is there better options ??

Also if you want to keep a port that was installed as a dependency, you can set it to be requested manually. Does the Debian system have the same functionality? It seems that there are some utilities that get that done..
