In the answer there was some program which would create a file listing all installed apps and store it in /home. On updating the OS or re-installing, the file would be used to re-install all apps listed.
How can I generate a list of all the apps I have installed in my Ubuntu installation?
View 3 Replies View Relatedi installed "display calibrator" from the distros and afterwards i cant find it under Applications (graphics/ sound&audio/system tools...), so i went to System > Preferences > Main Menu and it isnt listed anywhere.
View 1 Replies View Relatedim very slowly migrating across from Windows to OpenSuse. However i have a few quarms about the system and how it works.
1. Add / Remove programs. Is there a way to see a list of software that you have installed and is it quite easy to "un-install" it? I have installed Compiz and then when i went to remove it i could see 10ish items called Compiz. I was confused about how to uninstall it all from my system successfully without getting rid of something i need.
2. Software packages.I have tried to install packages from the OpenSuse site and I'm not sure what has happened to it. I have installed Virtual box from here and nothing has happened. I cannot search or even see Virtualbox anywhere. What im wanting to do is run OpenSuse as my Primary OS and then run Windows 7 on VB so i can continue to work as normal under it.
3. OpenSuse in a Microsoft domain. Is this possible? At work we use a Microsoft domain but is there a way i can install the Admin tools for OpenSuse so i can continue to work as normal by for example using Active Directory etc etc.
4. Device Manager? In Windows you have the "Device manager" a very handy tool that tells you what is on your computer, what drivers are missing and need installing etc. I can't see anything like this in Suse. Im not sure if all my hardware is installed once i am in Suse like Graphics cards, sound card, network card, card reader, and anything else that is on my PC etc.
5. Partitioning. Can someone give me a good description on how OpenSuse partitions your hard drive. I have seen it gives you a "swap?" drive etc but unsure as to what this is.
Recently I have installed DockbarX and Cardapio. After installation they are supposed to be found in the Add to Panel items, but both of them are not there.I can run them directly without any problem. Is there anything else I should do manually? I have tried pkill gnome-panel to restart the panel as well.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI understand there is a file that stores the repositories' information, but I can't find it!Is there a way I can create a list of what applications have been installed? The idea is that if I am running a backup, finding a way to save the repository list and applications installed so if I am upgrading, or fixing a borked system by re-installing Fedora, I could copy the repo list back, and run the applications list like ode:yum install <cat apps.txt?> and get all of the applications I've installed via Yum without having to remember them all?Is there anything else, outside of /home, I should look at backing up? SELinux settings?
View 6 Replies View Relatedin light of the current kernel flaw being circulated:[URL]...and the solution being proposed here:[URL].. How do I know if I have any 32 bit binaries running on my machine: Ubuntu: 10.04 64 bit
I generally always install most of my apps through the repo's but I **may** have installed some apps from source code or other methods. So how can I list any 32 bit binaries running on my machine before implementing the solution cited in the second link?
I downloaded rpm so far but my only problem is I don't know what apps there are for it?
View 14 Replies View RelatedJust noticed that the buttons for each open application, normally arrayed across the bottom menu bar, are totally missing. They're just not their, either for open or hidden apps! All I can think of that I've done since the new install is I did download gconf-editor and possibly opened it once, but I made no intentional changes.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to add applications to my "Startup Applications" menu. Most of the time, they "stick," but sometimes simply disappear, either immediately or after a variable length of time (sometimes more or less immediately, sometimes after several restarts, or anywhere in between). I've noticed that, when they stop booting, their entry disappears from ~/.config/autostart, but changing permissions on the affected files (e.g., removing write access) doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestions? Re-adding the same things over and over gets frustrating after a while, and I can't figure out why these entries are disappearing.Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 with an Intel Centrino Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM.
When I run updates I get a long list of packages for which it says 'The following package updates will NOT be installed'. I'm wondering why not?
The only thing I can think of is I followed the guide in a sticky thread in the Multimedia forum to get codecs installed, and part of that is to change the vendor of some Opensuse packages to packman.
Code:
~> sudo zypper up
Retrieving repository 'openSUSE-11.2-Update' metadata [done]
Building repository 'openSUSE-11.2-Update' cache [done]
Retrieving repository 'packman' metadata [done]
Building repository 'packman' cache [done]
code....
I had clicked the link to change system packages to the ones in the packman repo. After hitting accept everything went well until it was at least 90% done, and then it froze, mouse stopped moving. So I waited a while, and after nothing happened I rebooted my computer. Now the first time I tried to go back into the software update section it gave me an error: "cannot read the list of installed packages"
and kicked me out. After trying to go in again this time it worked, however it won't install anything anymore and just gives me the error that whatever I want to install failed, for example trying to install VLC and dependancies gives me:
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: rpmdb: PANIC: Invalid argument rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery error: db3 error(-30977) from dbcursor->c_put: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery how do I recover the installed packages database, or rebuild it?
how do I save installed packages in a list and restore ...
rpm -qa > installed-software.log
yum install $(cat installed-software.log)
sorting rpm packages by size
rpm -qa --qf '%{SIZE} %{NAME}
' | sort -n
I'm trying to install kweather in 11.2. I have downloaded and installed. I can find it in usr/bin and usr/lib but I can't add an application as in 11 or 11.1. It doesn't show up in the list of apps. It's there but I can't get it on the desktop.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have read this simple instruction to get me tweetdeck into my desktop computer (AMD Athlon X2, 2GB ram, 160gb HDD - Debian SID)[URL]
I'm not sure what happened but installing Adobe Air in Debian is like installing in Windows XP -- I used the .bin file instead of the .deb because the .deb say's Adobe Air is 32 bit application.
So it is installed (sucessful or not I still don't know) -=- I go to tweetdeck site and got to its desktop page where there should be an install button -- however, there aren't any or it wont show -- it partially show like a running circle but it's not running. Then when I click on it -- it disappears.
I tried installing other air app like livebrush but the same -- the button is not shown. My Sid is updated as of now. I also have google chrome browser -- the behavior is the same as with iceweasel v3.5.10
is it possible to use a terminal to install/run currently installed WINE apps...? if so, please let me know how to do so, i'm trying to run my guild wars game client, and its saying that the program doesn't have sufficient priveleges to run...
EDIT: i think i figured it out, but it gives me this code:
wine: /home/ahs62491/.wine is not owned by you
Like i'm curious what version of wine i have installed...What are my current ati drivers installed...If wine isn't 1.2 or 1.3 how do i update it from command line?really any insight into this process would help its not absolutely critical to know but i've been looking around and haven't found informationOr some references to good articles to become a command line guru would be cool as well.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install a minimal Gnome setup without any of the usually installed apps. Last time I tried this it worked fine but that was a couple of years ago (see this thread if you're interested). The closest I've got so far is to install a CLI system from the alternate install CD and then run:
Code:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude -y full upgrade
sudo aptitude -y install xorg gdm gnome-core plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo ubuntu-artwork jockey-gtk network-manager synaptic
The problem is that one of these packages (I think that it's gnome-core) installs Epiphany, Evince, Evolution, Gwibber and Ubuntu One which I don't want. how to get a minimal system installed without these apps?
I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my system and i have a lot of apps on it.is there a way that in case of a full re-installation or hard disk replacement i could have all my softwares and settings installed on the new Ubuntu installation.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been using Fedora 11 x86_64 for over a year and am about to upgrade to Fedora 13 using a genuine Fedora installation CD that I got last summer at OSCON. I've made a full system backup, but before I take the plunge I want to get a list of all installed applications. I have tons of special applications installed, many of which took tweaks to get running. Just in case something breaks so badly that I have to reinstall I want to be sure I can put everything back, even if it takes me several days work.I know I have read about utilities that will generate a list of installed apps, but I can't find any.

Basically i need to test multiple printers at the same time so i will have some usb printers and parallel printers all connected at the same time and test print them by simply running the shell script.
