Ubuntu :: Install A Minimal Gnome Setup Without Any Of The Usually Installed Apps

May 25, 2011

I'm trying to install a minimal Gnome setup without any of the usually installed apps. Last time I tried this it worked fine but that was a couple of years ago (see this thread if you're interested). The closest I've got so far is to install a CLI system from the alternate install CD and then run:

Code:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude -y full upgrade
sudo aptitude -y install xorg gdm gnome-core plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo ubuntu-artwork jockey-gtk network-manager synaptic

The problem is that one of these packages (I think that it's gnome-core) installs Epiphany, Evince, Evolution, Gwibber and Ubuntu One which I don't want. how to get a minimal system installed without these apps?

Ubuntu :: Setup Updates On Minimal Install Iso?

Jul 16, 2011

So I downloaded the ubuntu 10.10 minimal install iso cd because I wanted to make an install with only the things that I needed instead of the ubuntu's full cd iso that comes with a bunch of things I don't need or use.I have set everything up right, and everything is working fine. But I would like for my programs to get updated. When I check the update manager, there are no updates there, the only thing that shows is an available upgrade to 11.04( which I don't want to upgrade to) . I would like to know, How can I set up this minimal install to get updates regular like the Full ubuntu distributions? and have all my programs updated, and also be warned when there are new updates for my machine? as it is on a normal ubuntu install. Is this possible to do??

Fedora :: Error Gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 When Choose A Minimal Install Then Add ONLY The Defaults Of The "GNOME Desktop" Package

May 3, 2011

I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:

system-backgrounds-gnome

When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

The monitors are plugged into the onboard vga and dvi ports of my motherboard. I believe the chipset is intel.

At the moment the displays are cloned.

I don't know much about xorg.

OpenSUSE Install :: Install Error - Config Defaults For GNOME For GNOME Power Manager Have Not Been Installed Correctly

Mar 4, 2010

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;

GNOME failed to load telling me:

Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.

So I

Code:

To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:

Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.

So I try

Code:

To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error

Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.

So I

Code:

And get the following

I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run

Code:

On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run

Code:

To mount the device.

I end up with:

Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)

So, I

Code:

And see 9 partitionitions

Code:

Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get

plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.

I try

Code:

On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try

Code:

And run into the error:

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)

Good thing is there is a

Code:

Since space is a problem, I

Code:

On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to

Code:

I still get the error

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override

Code:

For package update tells me

cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w

Code:

For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

Fedora Servers :: How To Setup Weave Minimal Server

Feb 14, 2011

As I do not want to entrust my firefox data Mozilla's Server and have a server runnig anyway, I wanted to setup a server which provides weave service. I found this and know from different sources of the web that this indeed works: [URL] It is a stripped down Weave server intended for personal use. All in all, it does not sound to complicated. The developer says

Quote:

You ll need a relatively recent php with sqlite, mbstring and json support, and apache, preferably running ssl. Give it a shot and let me know how it worked for you in the comments. I have Fedora 14. Only problem is that Fedora does not provide a php-sqlite package. For this I found a repo [URL] So I installed php-sqlite (as well as php-pdo, php-cli and php common) with

Code:

yum --enablerepo=remi intstall php-sqlite

In consequense all php releted stuff was replayed by remi provided packages. In addition I installed json to get JSON support. The author describes the setup quite easy as follow:

Quote:

SERVER SETUP

Add the following line to your apache config:

Alias /weave /<path to this folder>/index.php

Restart your apache server. Point your browser at h[URL]. Enter "blah" for the username and garbage for the pwd. Auth will fail, but it will create the db (you can cancel the subsequent request for auth). You should now see a file called weave_db in the directory.

You can create and delete users by running the create_user script.

CLIENT SETUP

in about.config, set extensions.weave.serverURL to [URL] You can run it under http, but this is insecure and not recommended. If I disable or set SELinux to permissive mode I can point my browser to [URL] Here starts the trouble. After attemping to login no weave_db is created. I tried even 777 permission in that directory. I can run the create_user script with php and add a user, but the database does not seem to be recognized, I am unable to login into weave service.

General :: Minimal Installed Server, Put A GUI And VNC Via Command Line?

Apr 14, 2010

Total, total noob here, but I would like to know if this is possible, and maybe some tips on how to do it if it is.I just got myself a dedicated server, and I guess I assumed I could just remote control it via my own screen, much like using vnc or remote desktop, but that wasn't the case. The server has Debian 5.0, a "minimal install" is what they called it, I assume it's just installed and not configured at all.1. Connect to the server, and I guess the only way is via telnet? Since I have no VNC or remote desktop (yeah, microsoft, I know, but I don't know what it's called for Linux/GNU).2. Can I install VNC or somehow "activate" or "open" the GUI via telnet, much like a remote desktop kind of solution? I have used Debian's GUI on my laptop a couple of times, and I'm a total Windows-user, but I can navigate the graphical interface. I'm just COMPLETELY nulled when it comes to command line.So yeah, I guess I'm wondering how the heck I can remote control the server via a GUI, preferably VNC, and if I can install it via telnet or however I'm supposed to connect to the server?

Debian :: Installing Minimal Gnome-shell After Stretch Netinst?

Jan 27, 2016

I've just installed debian testing on my computer (netinst AKA basic shell version). Now, how do I do a minimal gnome install? Minimal means, I don't need libreoffice or any extra bloat. However, I do want nautilus, gnome-settings-daemon and networkmanager (and of course, firefox!).

Also, is audio included or not in gnome-shell?

If I just install the gnome-shell package (with --no-install-recommends package), will it pull in gdm, Xorg, etc. or do I have to install them separately? Also, need to confirm whether my sources.list is properly set or not:

Code: Select alldeb http://ftp.security.debian.org/debian/ stretch main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main

Ubuntu Servers :: Create A New Server Package And Leave Minimal Minimal?

Feb 17, 2010

After a long time I tried ubuntu(9.10) again on my fileserver, I have some remarks; why does a minimal server installation include X/openoffice? I don't need document conversion on a fileserver and I bet a lot of people don't. Wouldn't it be better to create a new server package and leave minimal minimal? low memory installs (64mb) don't work unless you configure swap by hand in between things, 64mb ram is a lot in my eyes. I mean, not to be rude but if I wanted all this I could've better installed Solaris.

That said it's stable and running fine. Since it's my home fileserver I tried to convert my previously created raid10 mirror on an adaptec 1200 card to a softraid 5 solution. This is wat I did:

OpenSUSE Install :: ATI Driver Installs Have Destroyed SUSE/GNOME Graphics Setup?

May 20, 2011

Caution to all using ati graphics download repository. I have been using SUSE 11.4 after an upgrade from 11.3 through zypper for months. I added ati graphics as a update repository. Software update installed two ati files. I did not notice their names.

Upon installation my graphics was acting funny so I uninstalled the two ati-files figuring I'd be back to where I was. Now I can only get into terminal window after reboot at both runlevel 3 and 5; no graphics at all. I keep getting message re: display 'null' I wish to return to original graphics configuration prior to ati downloads which, I believed used xorg drivers.

I believe I either need to revise xorg.conf file back to original which was overwritten by ati process or reinstall xorg/X11 related files. I have an ati radeon HD 3450 agp card. 32 bit SUSE w/11.4 installed and running. Anyone have a sample xorg.conf that might work or some other ideas of how to get back to where I was.

As a related question, if I do a fresh reinstall of SUSE 11.4 using dvd can I save my /home files and any /filesystem files that my special software created in root directories.

Debian :: Adobe Air Apps Cannot Be Installed In Sid

Jul 7, 2010

I have read this simple instruction to get me tweetdeck into my desktop computer (AMD Athlon X2, 2GB ram, 160gb HDD - Debian SID)[URL]

I'm not sure what happened but installing Adobe Air in Debian is like installing in Windows XP -- I used the .bin file instead of the .deb because the .deb say's Adobe Air is 32 bit application.

So it is installed (sucessful or not I still don't know) -=- I go to tweetdeck site and got to its desktop page where there should be an install button -- however, there aren't any or it wont show -- it partially show like a running circle but it's not running. Then when I click on it -- it disappears.

I tried installing other air app like livebrush but the same -- the button is not shown. My Sid is updated as of now. I also have google chrome browser -- the behavior is the same as with iceweasel v3.5.10
