Ubuntu :: Boot In Windows XP To Run A Couple Of Apps That Don't Run In Wine?

Feb 26, 2011

I got tired of having to boot in Windows XP to run a couple of apps that don't run in Wine. I've heard a bout a virtual machine, virtualbox and all of that. Sorry, I need a crash course. What do I need to download/install? Do I need a WXP live CD or something like that?

Software :: Running Windows Apps By Installing WINE?

Jan 26, 2011

I'm somewhat knew to Linux (CentOS), so WINE is completely foreign to me also. I'm immediately interested in TaxAct, which is how I learned about WINE. My question is whether my system will maintain the same stability that Linux is known for, and whether my CentOS build will keep it's current RHEL integrity after I install WINE, and probably other Windows Apps. Your experience with WINE is coveted.

Ubuntu :: Run A Couple Of Games Through Wine?

Oct 18, 2010

i recently decided to try and run a couple of games through wine, however trying to install two of them through wine, after putting in the second cd in the installer, the system will not recognise/mount the cd at all in the filesystem. it will instantly recognise the cd after i quit the installer for both of the games, so i guess that running the wine setup is interfering with ubuntu's ability to read or mount a cd. since it has happened on two separate occasions and has worked on windows, there must be something happening on my system that is preventing it. so my question is has anybody else experienced this or think that they know what might be causing the problems?

I have gone through the smb.conf file multiple times as well as examining the directories and do not see what the issue might be.

Ubuntu :: Minimizing WINE Apps Makes Them Disappear?

Oct 22, 2010

After installing Maverick 64 bit (clean install, used to be 32 bit Lucid) any applications I run in WINE disappear when I minimize them. They don't crash, they're just impossible to reach as they're no longer in task manager, they don't show up through alt-tab but I can see them if I run ps -x from a terminal. I tried with mIRC and the client is still responding, it'll still accept files with auto-get on so it's working fine, but the UI is gone

Ubuntu :: Unable To Print From Wine Apps / Resolve This?

Jan 24, 2011

I am unable to print from Wine applications (including Notepad) because Wine thinks I have no printers installed. I have a network printer and print-to-file both working fine in normal KDE applications. I did some looking around and found the following:http://www.witch.westfalen.de/Wine-H...intconfig.html
This is very old, and probably very out of date. I also had trouble following the examples. In any case I don't have anything called winerc or wine.conf. I just have a .wine directory.
Supposedly I should have registry keys for printers in Wine, so I looked where those are supposed to be. I have two keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetContro lPrintPrinters: (Default) and DefaultSpoolDirectory. Perhaps if I added the right key here I could get Wine to notice CUPS? I wouldn't begin to know what to put though.
http://www.winehq.org/docs/wineusr-g...s-to-configure claims that Wine should "just work" with CUPS. So much for that. It also says that if it doesn't work with CUPS it falls back to look in /etc/printcap. I have one of those, but it doesn't contain anything except the default comment telling me not to edit the file. Maybe if there's a way to regenerate /etc/printcap to contain the printers that show up in KDE, Wine would notice. Again, I have no clue how to do that.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 x64, and I'm using Wine 1.2, not Wine 1.0. All my packages are completely up to date.

OpenSUSE :: Running Win Apps Under Wine?

Jun 12, 2011

There are some apps for win that run on wine just with an ordinary install procedure. There are others that will never work at all. But there are also some that wine users claim to have made run by changing some specific configuration of wine, using some trick or even creating scripts on playonlinux.

So if I try to run an app on wine and it doesn't and I don't find any user documentation about some specific trick or config for that app what adjustments can I do to try to make it run? I mean, it's tiring and perhaps foolish to spend hours playing with every possible config in wine frontend without knowing what I'm doing. So what can I do to find out what libraries, configs, tricks or scripts are needeed to make an app run under wine if it didn't at the first try?

Debian Configuration :: 32 Bit Apps On Wine Cannot See System Fonts

Oct 23, 2015

I've just installed Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit, installed wine, and found that a 32-bit Windows program (Agent newsreader) could not see the linux system fonts. (This worked fine on Kubuntu 14.04)

Since this is the first time that I've installed Debian, I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious or if this is an actual bug.

Steps to reproduce:
Fresh install of Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit.
apt-get install wine
wine wordpad # this is a small word-processor for wine that is supplied with wine
menu -> format -> font
all linux fonts are visible -- so far so good

Because I want to use a 32bit program, I now have to do this, I understand:
dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update
apt-get install wine-bin:i386

But after that,if I run "wine wordpad" and look at the fonts, all the linux system fonts are gone. The only fonts visible are the nine that are built into wine (Courier, Fixedsys, Marlett etc..) So installing the i386 wine support seems to have broken something.

Fedora :: X Freezes After Boot - Unresponsive Shortly Before Or After Login For A Couple Of Minutes

Apr 15, 2010

So my Dell latitude E6400 running fedora 12 (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE) is usually connected to a big screen (1920x1200).

Now each time I boot, X becomes unresponsive shortly before or after login for a couple of minutes, and then goes back to normal. This happens both with and without connection to the big screen.

The error messages associated to this seem to be like this, my /var/log/Xorg.0.log is cluttered with them :

Code:

I normally start my computer in the morning, walk off for some tea, and come back when X is functioning, but when I'm in a hurry it's pretty, or very, annoying ... drinking tea / coffee to wait for a computer to start is something people did in the 90s, it shouldn't be default behaviour in 2010 ...

Ubuntu :: Screen Popped Up A Couple Windows Reporting Error "Could Not Update ICEAuthority File" While Booting Up

May 4, 2010

note: acct and acct2 are not the actual account names. I spent a long time figuring out this ubuntu problem on my own and decided to share it with the ubuntu users out there. I will give a summary of what had happened and what I had done to resolve it. I did a lot of complicated account password changing as well. I wanted to get rid of the login keyring thing.

I had tried messing around with some of ubuntu's settings when I first installed 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I changed settings in: System>>Administration>>Users and Groups, and System>>Administration>>Login Screen. I got terrible results, but ended up solving it on my own. The first account I had was named "acct". I had an issue with the keyring always needing to be unlocked, meaning I had to type in a password twice. I did not like this. So I decided, why not delete this "acct" account and make a new one that I can use?

I made a second user account called "acct2". I messed around a lot with the settings, just to see what would happen and what would work. I tried to cut out some of the files that were in the other account, the account "acct", while I was in user account "acct2". I could not because I did not have the rights to do it.

I realized I had to change those files to shared. I logged back into the other account "acct", which was an administrator account. I made them all shared files. Next, I went back into acct2, then cut all the files out of acct that I needed, then I deleted the home folder for acct. This is probably where the problems all started. I always start with the purple screen and have no choice to log into my usable acct2 account and have to wait 7 minutes to get that option to do so. When I rebooted, the screen popped up a couple windows reporting errors to me:

General :: Run Most My Windows Apps ?

Apr 23, 2010

Ok I am finally fed up enough with Microsoft to actually consider making my primary computer system a 100% Linux system... I build a really nice system about a year ago and got Windows 7 64 bit edition (all software is legal and legit) and my computer frequently freezes at random times... I'm pretty sure its not the ram or the motherboard and I run two hard drives with raid0 striping... I have used various Windows OS's on here and they all randomly freeze up during operation.. sometimes during heavy gaming and sometimes right when my system starts up... I dont think its a heat issue since I have a huge and efficient $75 heatsink/fan combo designed specifically for my cpu...

If I make this move, it will cost me a lot since I use a lot of Music and applications such as Ableton Live and Reason, and 3D software like Cinema 4D and zBrush.... Photoshop CS4... and games like Call of Duty MW2....

Will I still be able to use all my apps? I have heard of Wine but have never used it and I dont know how much you can do with Windows apps on Linux these days...

My system: i7 Quad Core/6GB ram/EVGA X58 mobo/GeForce9800GTX...

What I am looking for here is assurance that I will be able to run most of my major applications on Linux with out losing much system efficiency.

Ubuntu :: Use Windows Mediac Center And Other Apps On Win7 That Can't Be Run?

Mar 15, 2011

So, all I want to do is to shrink sda5 (Ubuntu partition) to 145GBs. Extend sda3 (Windows7) to 145GBs Leave the middle chunk (aprox 400GBs) as it's own free space partition as sort of a file sharing folder for Windows and Ubuntu to share. I use Ubuntu as my main OS and download movies etc. through it but use Windows Mediac Center and other apps on Win7 that (obviously) can't be run in Ubuntu.

So, can anyone give me some help at all. I'll use a live USB version of GParted to do the partition editing but I just want to double check with you guys before I touch anything. =]
