One of the first things I do when starting Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) is to open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T) with three tabs in it (ctrl-shift-T, ctrl-shift-T), one with irssi, one with ipython and one extra with just the commandline. Then I set the titles (F2) of the first two respectively to "irssi" and "ipython".Is there some way to write a script that automatically does all this? Or maybe save this configuration in a profile setting or something?
View 3 Replies View RelatedProblem with use of -hold|+hold on rxvt-unicode (urxvt) v9.09 on ubuntu server. On startup, I'm trying to launch terminal apps in urxvt automatically. E.g:

However, -|+hold does not seem to hold the terminal open. There is a flicker of a new window opening & then it's gone. I'm trying to invoke this from .xinitrc (startx-->.xinitrc) and also tried commands from inside awesome wm rc.lua (awful.util.spawn_with_shell("urxvt -hold -e mutt") seem to get same flicker result but closes immediately. I see this error in .xsession-errors, which might be relevant (do I perhaps need to specify the display??).

I did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.
Is there a way to run graphical apps as su without launching from the terminal? For example is there a way to open File Browser as su? And if the only way is via the terminal, then how can I find out the names of apps like the File Browser so I can launch them?

My problem is that most of my apps like frostwire, Ktorrent .... for that matter any application that requires to connect to the internet....are not able to detect my internet connection. I'm connected to Auto ethernet....I can browse...All my browsers work though and the OS is also able to connect.
View 1 Replies View Relatedsince last month i'm using ubuntu 10.04 and i have installed lots of apps and packages i needed on my old 20GIG hard drive and i'm very happy with it but now i had to use this 20gig hard on other old PC and erase it and install all the stuff again on my 500 gig hard drive dual boot with win7 but i don't have enough Internet bandwidth to download all apps again and i want to use my current apps installed on my old hard drive
i tried cloning with Acronis true image but i didn't work then i tried pasting my old hard /var/cache/apt/archives to my new installation but it didn't work neither. does anyone know how can i clone or use my already downloaded packages on my new installation?
Using lsof I noticed that everytime I open some apps (like Rhythmbox or Banshee) it connects to the internet over ports 80 and 443. All I'm doing though is surveying my music collection. Why is it connecting to the internet for this? I don't have podcasts or album covers or any of that stuff set. In fact I turned all that stuff off.
the problem is that I only get so much bandwidth on my mobile broadband plan. I don't want apps connecting when I don't need them to. I played around with the UFW but it appears to only allow port configuration. I can't see how to control the connections of applications. I installed Slackware 12.1 as I dont like KDE4 much yet. Any way For Some reason I find I can only use the internet by using apps with root privileges. Does anyone know what I may need to edit by any chance & what.?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with a new install of 9.10. I've set the ip address in /etc/network/interfaces and I've also set DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf.
The issue I am having is that no address resolves, nor can I ping outside of my LAN. I've wanted to avoid using the GUI network setup because it hasn't been saving the information correctly. Here are how the files look code...
I don't know what eth1 is; I only have 1 ethernet connection in that machine, so I'm thinking it may have something to do with that. However if the machine is using eth1 (which has no address) than it follows that I shouldn't be able to locally ssh or vnc into it, right?
Is there a way to check your up/down speed using the terminal? My internet connection seems to be limited at about 1MB/s, judging from how one program works, after reinstalling OS.

View 9 Replies View RelatedFirst, the network manager would show up on my girlfriend's profile (hers was the first one we created) but it won't show up on mine and it would not detect any internet connections. I found another thread that told me to type "nm-applet &" into the terminal, which works great. It shows the network manager and auto connects. But as soon as I close the terminal, it auto disconnects. Anyone know why and what I can do to make the network manager icon stay besides keeping the terminal open?

View 13 Replies View Relatedmy laptop seems to have a bad HDD, and I was thinking of trying to make it a "thin client." However since it is a laptop obviously I want to take it places. Is it possible to make a terminal server and "thin client" connect through the internet and not just LAN?The reason I quote thin client is because in my mind I am still going to need to use some HDD so I can connect to the internet and find my server.

When I fire up my F10, I get connected to the Internet through wireless automatically. I jus wanted to experience how the CLI- Command Line Interface world is and to test the text based internet apps like elinks,lynx etc.. So I changed the runlevel to 3 in my /etc/inittab file. When I set up a Virtual Machine with windows (using VMPlayer), I set the Network Connection properties from the VM settings from NAT to bridged. View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning 10.04. For some reason, starting today, I have no internet connection unless I run this command in terminal - sudo dhclient eth0. I have a hard wired ethernet connection on a Desktop PC with a static IP address (there are a number of devices in the house) and it has been running 100% for months and months. Why suddenly do I have to enter this command to get connection? When I switch on I get a connection in that when I click on the Top Panel icon and right click Connection Information it tells me I have an active connection to my router on the normal IP address. I cannot ping the router and Firefox says Server not found. After sudo dhclient eth0 everything works - what has happened since yesterday evening and this morning to stop what has been 100% for months?
