Ubuntu :: Unable To Print From Wine Apps / Resolve This?
Jan 24, 2011
I am unable to print from Wine applications (including Notepad) because Wine thinks I have no printers installed. I have a network printer and print-to-file both working fine in normal KDE applications. I did some looking around and found the following:http://www.witch.westfalen.de/Wine-H...intconfig.html
This is very old, and probably very out of date. I also had trouble following the examples. In any case I don't have anything called winerc or wine.conf. I just have a .wine directory.
Supposedly I should have registry keys for printers in Wine, so I looked where those are supposed to be. I have two keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetContro lPrintPrinters: (Default) and DefaultSpoolDirectory. Perhaps if I added the right key here I could get Wine to notice CUPS? I wouldn't begin to know what to put though.
http://www.winehq.org/docs/wineusr-g...s-to-configure claims that Wine should "just work" with CUPS. So much for that. It also says that if it doesn't work with CUPS it falls back to look in /etc/printcap. I have one of those, but it doesn't contain anything except the default comment telling me not to edit the file. Maybe if there's a way to regenerate /etc/printcap to contain the printers that show up in KDE, Wine would notice. Again, I have no clue how to do that.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 x64, and I'm using Wine 1.2, not Wine 1.0. All my packages are completely up to date.

My wife has a canon MP470 printer and running ubuntu 10.10. I am able to print black and white, but unable to print photos. I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?

I'm running Fedora 14 KDE. I've configured my HP LaserJet 2300 printer in System Settings, and can print the test page fine, but when I try to print from an application such as Firefox, the application seems to think it's printing, but it doesn't actually print. I see no dialog box telling me that a job was created. There are no new jobs in the printer applet. Where are my print jobs going? I'm not really even sure where to look. I don't see anything printer related in /var/log/messages.
Well, looks like I got it fixed. Not sure exactly why, but restarting CUPS seems to have resolved it. We'll see if it stays working, but for now, I can print...

After installing Maverick 64 bit (clean install, used to be 32 bit Lucid) any applications I run in WINE disappear when I minimize them. They don't crash, they're just impossible to reach as they're no longer in task manager, they don't show up through alt-tab but I can see them if I run ps -x from a terminal. I tried with mIRC and the client is still responding, it'll still accept files with auto-get on so it's working fine, but the UI is gone

I got tired of having to boot in Windows XP to run a couple of apps that don't run in Wine. I've heard a bout a virtual machine, virtualbox and all of that. Sorry, I need a crash course. What do I need to download/install? Do I need a WXP live CD or something like that?

I just installed Fedora 12 86_64, and Wine won't run any software that I attempt to install. It just says opening file, and after a few seconds disappears. The same software that I was running in Wine f10 is not running in 12.

There are some apps for win that run on wine just with an ordinary install procedure. There are others that will never work at all. But there are also some that wine users claim to have made run by changing some specific configuration of wine, using some trick or even creating scripts on playonlinux.
So if I try to run an app on wine and it doesn't and I don't find any user documentation about some specific trick or config for that app what adjustments can I do to try to make it run? I mean, it's tiring and perhaps foolish to spend hours playing with every possible config in wine frontend without knowing what I'm doing. So what can I do to find out what libraries, configs, tricks or scripts are needeed to make an app run under wine if it didn't at the first try?

Well, that's about it - the firefox and thunderbird packages included on the first batch of official 13.1 updates keep crashing when I try to print a web page or an e-mail. Seamonkey, updated as well, can print as usual.

I've just installed Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit, installed wine, and found that a 32-bit Windows program (Agent newsreader) could not see the linux system fonts. (This worked fine on Kubuntu 14.04)
Since this is the first time that I've installed Debian, I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious or if this is an actual bug.
Steps to reproduce:
Fresh install of Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit.
apt-get install wine
wine wordpad # this is a small word-processor for wine that is supplied with wine
menu -> format -> font
all linux fonts are visible -- so far so good
Because I want to use a 32bit program, I now have to do this, I understand:
dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update
apt-get install wine-bin:i386
But after that,if I run "wine wordpad" and look at the fonts, all the linux system fonts are gone. The only fonts visible are the nine that are built into wine (Courier, Fixedsys, Marlett etc..) So installing the i386 wine support seems to have broken something.

I'm somewhat knew to Linux (CentOS), so WINE is completely foreign to me also. I'm immediately interested in TaxAct, which is how I learned about WINE. My question is whether my system will maintain the same stability that Linux is known for, and whether my CentOS build will keep it's current RHEL integrity after I install WINE, and probably other Windows Apps. Your experience with WINE is coveted.

I have Linux Mint installed on my wife's laptop along with Wine/Office 2003. (she wants MS Office!). Here's the issue: She pulls up a word document in MS Word that has graphics in it. When she prints to her HP 2600N laser printer, the graphics do not print out. She also has blank boxes on the 2nd page that print out solid black. If we open the same document in OpenOffice, it prints fine....but she still wants to use MS Office!

I have no need for libwine-print, nor cups. I noticed this issue while trying to remove cups. It's a box with no printer and will never see one, so I see no need to have it. I know it's not using much space, but I don't want it if I don't need it. Is there a way to remove libwine-print without removing wine?
Code:
Shelly:~# dpkg -P cups cups-bsd cups-client cups-common cups-driver-gutenprint cupsddk cupsddk-drivers
(Reading database ... 228913 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing cups ...
Stopping Common Unix Printing System: cupsd.
Purging configuration files for cups ...

I'm trying to set up a customer who has two printers attached to their computer one is some sort of okidata color laser printer, which seems to work fine the other one is a brother HL-4040CDN, which prints fine from a Linux based application such as open office.
When i try to print from a program in wine, however, I can't for the life of me get it to print properly to legal sized paper, it doesn't complain about paper size or anything, it simply crops the print size to that of letter sized paper even though I tell it the paper size is Legal.
I have tried setting the default paper size on the printer's firmware settings, I have tried setting the paper size in cups both through the printer preferences applet and the web interface, i have tried telling the program to print to legal paper and the only thing i can affect is which end of the paper it prints to, i have even tried different drivers for CUPS, i'm not sure if the problem is wine, the program, the printer, or how wine talks to the specific printer via cups (the other printer prints fine) i am using ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10.

What should I do to clear WINE state in my system if it's already flooded with installed Win apps and lots of registry configs? Like WINE has just been installed and nothing more. No Windows apps, no configurations were made, clear registry, etc... Is it enough just to delete "~/.wine"?

Ever since I upgraded to 10.10, I've been having problems with running KDE apps under my Gnome desktop.Problem one: Apps start in full screen. With Amarok, I was able to set a shortcut key to un-fullscreen the program, which worked. BasKet does not have an option for setting such a keyboard shortcut, and it's pretty much just stuck in fullscreen. Since I'm running Gnome, I do not have an option for un-fullscreening it via the window list bar/right click window menu.
Second problem: My KDE apps seem to use my GTK theme/color settings, but only partially. This results in a situation where I have black text on gray background, which makes it pretty unusable unless I change the GTK theme to something more black-on-white. Before 10.10, KDE apps used to run with what I assume was some sort of a KDE theme, completely different from my GTK theme. I was OK with that, and if possible, would like to remove whatever Gnome-KDE compatibility thing that is causing this.

I just installed the TV-Fox add-on for Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11200), but it doesn't seem to work. When I choose a Channel all it does is load for ages, saying 'waiting for video'. Are there any additional packages that need to be installed for this to work, or is it just not working in general?

I just built out an Ubuntu Server 10.04.
My problem is setting the hostname. I cloned the machine, then normally on the clone, I would change the /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts file.
However, when I do this, upon restart, I get the message, "init hostname main process (some process number) terminated with status 1"Then, when the machine finally boots, the hostname is set to (none). Literally has braces like: user@(none):
I've tried: sudo hostname machine_name but it says can't resolve hostname (none).
I've Google'd around a lot but can't get it. It may have something to do with 10.04? I have been using 9.04, 9.10 with no problems.
eric@(none):~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

The proprietary drivers that came with my ubuntu 9.04 installation are not doing their job. My cpu is managing my graphics (compiz-fusion, and a 3d obj running in the background) and I alway have a core of my phenom processor close to 100. I have an ATI 4870 gpu with 2gb internal ram on the card. Also, recordmydesktop, electric sheep, and any other simple graphics all lag. 3d games on the other hand have no problem. I decided I would try the driver I downloaded from AMD. I removed the proprietary driver, ran...
Code:
sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-10-1-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/jaunty
and I get
Code:
Created directory fglrx-install.lPNHYh
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing ATI Proprietary Linux Driver-8.69 .....
/bin/sh: execstack: not found
make: *** [binary-install/xorg-driver-fglrx] Error 127
dpkg-buildpackage: failure: debian/rules binary gave error exit status 2
Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.lPNHYh
How to make the proprietary driver work better I'm all for that to.

(it works perfectly over on my other partition with windows7 using the setup disk for Brother). I have installed everything related to Brother from Synaptic and searched the Brother web site for any drivers relating to this model and have even tried installing from Synaptic MFC-240C drivers in case they may work (no 250c available in synaptic) selecting PRINT for instance in Fspot my printer receives information for the photo but does not commence printing ..the same applies working in Gimp Gutenprint.
