Can anyone please recommend a good sound card with a optical out that has Linux drivers? I'm planning on making this an Ubuntu based system and have been looking at getting an X-Fi but there seems to be a lot of posts online about Creative stopping drivers for Linux a few years ago

I can boot from cd and can mount cds from within Slackware but for some reason k3b insists that i don't have a drive.
I have an older laptop (Dell Inspiron 4100) on which I have installed a minimal Slackware system, and have just managed to get wireless working by using a Linksys Wireless-G card (WPC54GS) and installing the b43 packages from the SlackBuilds site.
Unfortunately, I am experiencing system freezes ... and if my Google searches are correct, these are related to the firmware driver (b43 stuff).
I wonder if anyone can recommend a good wireless card that works with Slackware out of the box ?
I have severe sound issues with my sound card. I am on a dell E1505, by now I am assuming there is some kinda update I have to get for this to work right, like the wireless driver. It's all static and causes programs to not run right, then when you go to close the programs effected, they freeze up..

Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.

I'm using Xubuntu Natty at the moment, on an Acer Aspire 5739G. Figured I would go to Realtek's site and get the most recent soundcard driver, since the built-in subwoofer has never worked on Linux for me.
I used the automatic install script, then when it tried to probe for other devices, suddenly I had no sound.

how to install alsa drivers along with Asus xonar dgx sound card. I followed these instructions. URL....And until "Setting up modprobe and kmod support" instructions were clear. I should put something in /etc/modules, but I dont down exactly what.

Completely new to Ubuntu, basically never used anything but Windows before, hadn't even had a chance to properly test out Ubuntu before I broke it. So, sorry if this question is very easy...or if I'm posting it in the wrong place...
Anyway, I cleverly installed the most recent drivers for my graphics card, and it killed Ubuntu - it won't start now. This happens on Windows, too, but Windows will System Restore for me. How might I fix this in Ubuntu?
I can choose Ubuntu from the grub menu, but then the screen goes blank, the fan on my computer goes into overdrive, and nothing happens.
Am currently running my Karmic Koala from LiveCD...

The audio from the PC comes through ok when listening to music and movies. But unfortunately I can figure out how to enable the audio passthrough from my Tv so that the audio comes out of my theatre kit. In Sound Preferences, the hardware is set to 1 Output / 1 Input [Digital Stereo (IEC95 Output + Digital Stereo (IEC95 Input]. When I click on the audio tab, the Input Volume is at 100% and the Input Level is moving in conjunction with the audio coming from the Tv.
I saw it mentioned in another thread to install Gnome Alsa Mixer which I've done, it seeems to identify the audio chipset as Realtek ALC882, the motherboard is an Abit AB9 Pro. Hopefully I'm missing some config somewhere or there a box I should be ticking but I just can't find it.
I've got an urgent problem! I had some viruses as my program told me and in the end I had to restart my eee pc!Problem is now after it starts and you click on the log me in icon for the netbook it makes the nice hello sound, takes some time and then does the shut down (goodbye) sound. So basically the netbook booted already right? But I cant log myself in! What can I do?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got a problem on my Debian, I've tried installing all the correct alsa packages and all packages that have the word sound or audio description. The problem that is happening here is that when I go into settings and click on sound in Gnome, it appears to have a dummy output and in fact, a few weeks ago, the sound was working properly. Now, I believe, that after an update, the sound card was not recognized. Used the lspci command in root mode, and showed my sound card which is onboard. I'll leave the model below it, because I've tried everything and could not solve anything.

I am using FC6 on my system, I tried to configure the soundcard using, system-config-soundcard utility. But once I type system-config-soundcard from my shell, it doesn't start at all. However its not showing any error also. What can I do next?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought the Creative X-Fi 5.1 Surround USB card today and it works flawlessly with my 5.1 speaker set that I use for my computer. However, in the next few days, I'm getting a 5.1 home theater system to which I want to hook up both my new SACD player and my PC.
I got the Creative because it has an optical output, so it should allow me to send 5.1 audio to the receiver. I'm a bit confused, though, because when I look at my hardware tab in the Sound Preferences, I only have the options that I attached to choose from. There is no digital/optical multichannel profile in there.
The culprit is a Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology 222A CD/DVD RW drive, aka SH-S222A, sold under the Samsung brand. It occasionally locks up my entire system when I'm ripping an audio CD to a *.toc/*bin image with Brasero. I've had this happen with several different audio CDs, while ripping discs using both Imgburn under Windows XP and Brasero under Ubuntu 10.04. The display freezes completely, the mouse cursor doesn't move, and I can't get any response to keyboard input. Any sounds playing loop endlessly, repeating the last 0.5 sec or so before the cursor freeze. Meanwhile, the hard drive activity light stays on, but the optical drive light does not. I've let the system sit this way for several minutes, with no sign of change. To recover, I must press the system reset button.
I ripped the same discs without incident, using my other optical drive. It is a different brand, Lite-On, but otherwise similar to the Samsung drive: PATA interface, CD/DVD RW, etc. Anyone else have the Samsung SH-S222A? I'm wondering whether there is a bug in the drive's firmware, or I just have a defective drive. It works for other things. I can play audio CDs, access CD-ROMs, and rip audio CDs to individual tracks (rather than a disc image). I can also rip DVDs. Is there some way to recover my system when it locks up from drive misbehavior? I haven't found a way so far. I'm surprised that Ubuntu can be incapacitated so easily.
The SH-S222A has the most recent firmware revision, SB01. I tried to install the newer ID01 firmware from Samsung's website, but got a message that the installer couldn't find a "suitable" drive. I take that to mean that the ID01 firmware is meant for a slightly different variant of the -S222A, perhaps one only sold overseas. Yep, that's pretty much it. My drive's customer code is BEBE. Firmware ID01 is for drives with a different customer code.
The only user that can make the sound card work on a F10 x86_64 system is root. For non root users, I am not seeing any error messages when a app tries to use/access the sound card, just nothing plays. As I said, for root everything works as expected. I am sure this is a permission/setup issue, but I have no idea where to start.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just found new mesa-dri drivers in the updates-testing repo, installed all of them, uninstalled kmod-nvidia, and it just worked with my geforce 9500GT. For me, this is a huge step forward, the only thing still giving problems is the DVI signal, so I'm stuck in VGA. Even then, I was able to get a better resolution with the DVI signal using this testing drivers than with the nvidia ones (I tried several links suggested by DBelton in the nvidia-installation thread for fixing the DVI issue, to no avail).

And finally I am starting use it. openSUSE 11.4 installaition succesful, I updated it and it looks I don;t have any problems, but I got few questions.
1. How install older version of mozilla firefox internet browser here? I can't install some plugins because it's a firefox beta 12 version, for example. I am quake fan, o I like play quake live, but i can't install quake plugin, because my firefox is beta version.

If I wanted to step away from the non-free world and constant battles between nvidia and amd, where would I go? I am considering updating my graphics card and would prefer to make the use of open source drivers and not bother with the proprietary ones but I still want a card that's going to be reliable and give good 3d performance to run unity and some 3d games.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

i have a little experience with ubuntu but i have had bugs that are not resolvable at this time in ubuntu. so instead of giving wild bill back my pc i am looking for a new distro. my concerns with ubuntu revolve around acpi. no fan control and high temp. the 2nd problem that is almost overlookable is the ata1 softreset error. it usually is no problem but occasionally have to do manual fsck to fix. so heres my laptop specs. toshiba a305d-s6848. amd turion x2 ati x1250 integrated. 3gb ram. 500gb hd vista and ubuntu 9.04 dual boot grub with 100gb ubuntu and the rest vista. so q1= what suse version would be best?
q2= is suse's acpi better? ubuntu runs all features but fan control
q3= is suse as easy to install? or harder
q4= ati graphics i know for my card went to legacy what version still has the ati drivers for my card
q5= is suse easier or harder to work with and get everything working.
i know no linux is or opsys is perfect. im just looking for one that is stable and works the pc correctly. i know its a big thing to ask. i know no one can tell me that. but just looking for suggestions. im thinking of downloading suse and does all the downloads support live sessions.
I'm running Karmic on AMD64x2, and I have Compiz. I have been running fine, but when I run top, I see that compiz.real always takes up 100% of one of the cores of my CPU. this happens even when I change the visual effects to none in the appearance preferences. This problem starts as soon as I log in. My graphics card is an nvidia 8400gs, which is not that good, and I've installed my drivers using envy. Does anyone have any ideas about this problem?

I'm trying to find a good WIFI card replacement for my girlfriend's MSI Wind u90, but seems both the Intel 3945abg and the Intel 4965agn - the cards usually recommended for that model - seem to be spotty at best in all recent versions of Ubuntu including the last long-term release. Has anyone had success with a Broadcom 1020 (in any laptop but especially in a netbook)?
