I need a tool that will enable me to manage files and other operations from another computer, access to my server. VPS and other host they usually provide cpanel and other webadmin app to do that.
I need advices on the followings:
1. FTP, allow me to access to my folder, like a web host
2. Access to config the server settings
3. Probably a GUI similar to cpanel
Ok so I'm running Mint (not full Ubuntu), and I'm not sure if this is a problem with the FS, Kernel, what not.I'm running Linux Mint 9 - x64 - kernel 2.6.35.14 - and when I did a large file copy operation (9GB) it froze up my system until the copy operation was done. I couldn't even use Pidgin, Mozilla, or anything, when trying to open up another Terminal it froze as well.

Currently my partner will occasionally copy the files from the SD card onto the computer and then rename then. Then when I try to see which photos to bring across I can't do it.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an effective way to manage use of internet bandwidth by users on a local area network. Currently there is a simple broadband router and unmanaged switch, and a standalone Ubuntu Server (8.04) that provides DHCP, DNS and mail for the LAN, and a web server. Ports are forwarded from a static external IP address to HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, SSH and IMAPS, and some security is provided by IP Tables (managed by using UFW).
There are 5 users on the network, and currently one or two of those 5 are using beyond our monthly download allowance of 30Gb. 1) To be aware of how many users are currently using the internet connection, and to divide the bandwidth between that number (so that if there are, say, 3 active connections, the total bandwidth available is divided 3 ways, rather than one of those users being able to hog all of it).
2) To allow each user to download up to 1/5 of 30Gb each month without any additional throttling (apart from the above), but once they go over that allowance to throttle them individually to, say, 10Kbps until the start of the new month.
I've heard other threads talking about both IP Tables and a proxy server such as Squid. I have no idea which of these would be most suited to the task. Currently, as I said, the Ubuntu server is standalone and only using 1 NIC, but it has 2 NICs and I could be configured to act as a gateway for the LAN, instead of the router, which is set to be the current default gateway.
I have a LAMP server running Ubuntu 8.04.03 Server edition running smoothly. Ive setup several websites on the server and all are ok, but I constantly have trouble with permissions. Everytime I setup a new domain to host, I setup a user specific to that domain. This allows SSH login specific to the domain. The problem I have is that every time I setup ownership in the virtual directories for the users they belong to, the settings don't seem to stay. Initially it seems to work ok, but when I install Joomla and setup the webspace, I always seem to have to login to the server itself to chmod the folders I need to have writable. I cant chmod properly from my FTP client which is weird. How to manage permissions?

This works for a while but as I add new things to Joomla and I want to modify the folders, I always have to go back and redo the chmod and the chown commands to get them where I want.
I have a server on my home network. It's currently running a DNS server (bind9) and an HTTP caching server (squid).What I would like to do is redirect all outgoing port 80 connections to the squid server and also make the server responsible for managing DHCP on the network.
Do I just need to install a DHCP daemon on the server, disable it on the router, then set my server as the default gateway and configure iptables to route all connections like I want? Or is it more complicated than that? Also, would that mean that all communication between two computers on the network will go through the server?

Something like we attach tags with skills to people photographs, and then when people connect to the application by means of a browser, they see a list of tags, they click on a tag they get a list of people who have that skill. Ideally, the tags should be hierarchical (for example, skill: statistics, subskill: non-linear).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a server with multiple domains and a DNS service (bind9) my main domain is registered with GoDaddy and it's A-record points to my server, it then has CNAME records with ns1 and ns2. I use ns1 and ns2 to point my other domains to the DNS server I host, which then manages what happens.
Anyway, what I would like to do is enable the DNS server to manage the subdomains on my main host. For example, if the domain was example.com and I use admin.example.com in the DNS server, it will not follow through unless I set the cname up, whereas my others will. How do I do a similar thing for my main domain.
Ubuntu is installed on my external. Can I add/edit/manage files on the internal drive that Windows is on without messing anything up (provided I don't mess with system files)?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo i have a fresh install of the server edition of Karmic, i'm running the Xfce desktop. When I attempt to manage users and groups through the GUI, I am prompted for what I think is the root password, the reason I say this is because the account I am currently logged in has sudo privileges and it does not accept that password at all, but I read that by default the root account is 'locked,' (to be honest it was so long ago since I last installed Ubuntu I completely forgot if it is or isn't, my current desktop installation has su access) is it asking for the root password? why doesn't my current user account password work if the root account is 'locked'? I can perform all other administrative tasks with sudo no problem.
the funny thing is, I have the exact same setup in a virtual machine, the same problem happens, except for some strange reason after changing the password on the only account (besides root), the password required to administer users and groups stayed the same after the change. (at the time of installation I just put both the user and root password the same and now that it is setup), i'm now ready to change the passwords. except now I read that the root account is locked by default, but this strange problem occurs.

I have a linux server with debian system. I want to put in my debian server a site. I installed apache php mysql and phpmyadmim. I really thought that was more difficult for me to put my site database. But now i can load on server my database with phpmyadmin after a very simply installation. I could not believe. I'm studying how make ftp work (apt-get site-ftp?) and waiting from my host directadmin installed. But i try to manage linux console and was very exciting for a newbiest like me!
Now I can write text on my site server with echo etc,etc, I have a database, but I have not site files. While I was studying tutorial to make apache work, I frequently read the directory /var/www and my debian console confirm that is an existing directory. How can use this directory?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it

Recently we purchased a few iMac's for one of our deptartments and, while we're able to access the shares, all the files on them are read-only and we are unable to delete/modify files using the iMacs. This is not an issue with any of our windows machines (W2K, WinXP, Vista).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm unable to connect to a particular home wireless network under Fedora 9, although I can connect to it using WinXP on the same machine. My Fedora installation is able to connect to my college's unsecured wireless network, so it's not a driver issue I think.It seems to be an authorisation issue, as I'll describe below, but there's one other thing that's bothering me. The SSID for the network I have problems with is for some reason not listed in Network Manager's drop-down list, nor is it in the output of iwlist wlan0 scan. But I'm pretty sure it's not a "hidden" network - I don't know exactly how those work, but I helped the owner of the wifi network in setting it up, and don't remember doing anything that would make it hidden. As far as I can remember, Windows found the network automatically without having to be told the SSID. What's the best way to confirm whether it's a hidden network or not?
Anyway, I try to connect by selecting connect to other wireless network in Network Manager, and entering the SSID. As far as I can tell from the error messages below, the machine does contact the network and attempt to connect, but I'm not authorising myself properly. That may be a completely wrong diagnosis, but hopefully someone can see from the below info whether it's correct or not.I'm not sure which option to use for "Wireless Security": at the time we set up the network, it gave us a Hex WEP key of 26 characters, which is 104 bits. But none of the options in Network Manager's list match that. Here are the options it has, and the error message I get with each one:None - if I select this, it fails to connect, with no error message.
WEP 128-bit passphrase - if I select this and attempt to use my 26-character WEP key, it brings up a new dialog, saying "Passwords or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network [SSID]." It has a drop-down box labelled "Wireless Security", but this time the only option is "None", and the connect button is disabled, I can only click cancel.
WEP 40/128-bit hex - as above.
WEP 40/128-bit ASCII - The connect button is disabled when I try to use the WEP key, as the string is too long. Despite the fact that it says 40/128-bit, it actually accepts 5 and 13-character strings (40 or 104-bit). Since I've got a 104-bit hex key, I tried converting it to ASCII, but it consists of mostly unprintable characters, so I'm not sure there's any way to actually enter it into the textfield. I might have done something wrong here, so I've put my code below to see if anyone can point out a mistake.
LEAP - requires a username, not applicable here I think. Windows doesn't need one, and we don't have one from when we set the network up.Dynamic WEP (802.1x) - requires username, private key and various other things, all N/A WPA & WPA2 Personal - Brings up a dialog with the same text as for "128-bit passphrase", but this time "WPA & WPA2 Personal" is the only option in the drop-down list, instead of "None". It asks for a password, so I just enter the hex key again - now it asks for the password for the Gnome Default Keyring, which I don't think I've ever set up. Don't know if I can go any further with that, but my understanding is that since we were given a WEP key when we set up the network, WPA will be N/A.WPA & WPA2 Enterprise - as Dynamic WEP. N/A.Hopefully that's enough info that someone can help diagnose the problem. Some of the behaviour of Network Manager described above doesn't make sense to me, and I'm wondering if it's buggy.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI manage a computer remotely in a different country. The last upgrade I did (to openSUSE 11.2) seems to have had one issue that I didn't work out until later. I am unable to "Online Update" or "Software Manage" the system. Whenever I do I get the following error:

I have been through a number of attempted fixes via the thread 434687-software-repository-corruption but have not managed to resolve the issue. There is no one at the location that could repeat the "update" to hopefully fix the issue that way. I have a copy of the 11.2 DVD iso file on the remote computer. Is there some way that I can get the repository DB rebuilt or reinstalled so that I can then install other software and do Online Updates? Whatever I try has to be doable with the system running so that I can OpenVPN connect and issue commands remotely.
Sometimes while using Open Office, trying to open a file the dialog box takes 15 to 30 seconds of spinning balls until it shows me anything. Then changing a directory takes another 15 to 30 seconds. Visual feedback on selections take several seconds, and often I find myself a couple of subdirectories down from where I wanted to go due to caching of unacknowledged clicks.
My system is usually very, very fast, as one would expect from the specs. This problem happened, well, almost all the time with kernel 2.6.32-21-generic, now it just started happening again with 2.6.32-22-generic.During these slowdowns, opening Dolphin reveals the same problem, exceedingly slow response. While this is happening, top shows the system is not busy, and the hard disk light is not flashing. Idle is over 90% and user and sys are basically nothing. The system is basically doing nothing while making me wait.
Whenever I move files from a USB memory stick or external hard drive or any other such device the file only seems to transfer 99% of the data and often during moving file operations will freeze and an offer of 'force quit' will come up (although file operations will eventually vanish with the 99% of the file being moved).
Can anything be done to rectify problems with file operations?
HD operations indicator-lite flashes every second, on all my hd's..? What is the OS doing?.. Is this a security breach?.. Does this mean that my files are being uploaded at about 10K per second..? Or is this just a software checking status every second..? What does what, that engages the hd every second..?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I do some copying of files, or any background disk activity with file reading (transcoding a movie, uploading a big file to FTP, virus scanning) all computer becomes so slow, that I hardly can move my mouse, not to mention any productive use. I have SATA HDD, and Intel Quad CPU. I took measures to be sure it is not CPU or memory resource problem. Gentoo, Fedora, Windows don't freese that much on file reading. It is not a filesystem problem, or HDD, cuse I tried exactly this partition with other OSes.
Nice has a minor effect, but is is not enough, and I can't always start Nautilus with another nice level when I want to copy a file. What can I do to lower the priority of disk operations globally, and make apps to share disk thoughtput equally, not the one to occupie the disk until it finishes?
