Ubuntu :: Unable To Hibernate Computer After Upgrading To 10.10

Oct 20, 2010

I've just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 (32 bits). Everything seemed to be working great until I tried to hibernate; now it just goes into a blank screen and the "crescent" hibernation/suspend blinking LED on my Lenovo X200 just keeps blinking, and I had to force-shutdown the computer to turn it off. In short, hibernation doesn't work for me in 10.10. This didn't happen prior to the upgrade.

Ubuntu :: Suspend Or Hibernate / Computer Refuses To Go Into Hibernate Or Suspend?

Mar 16, 2010

Just got Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm liking it a lot, but my computer refuses to go into hibernate or suspend. I have a Dell M1530 but I don't really think it's a dell hardware issue because it's not just when I close the screen, it's also when I click suspend or hibernate from the menu.

I have 512 Mb of ram.Can anyone help or is this problem unsolvable ?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Make Computer Hibernate

Jun 30, 2010

After selecting Linux 2.6.23-22-generic 64-bit in the GRUB bootloader, I am staring at a black screen with a white flashing underscore for almost 2 minutes (usually between 1min40sec and 2min). The Linux kernel is loading here, and it's taking forever!

Once Plymouth starts it barely even manages to flash into view before it's done and I get to login, so bravo to Canonical. But seriously, I need that boot time cut down A LOT. Since I'm assuming it has quite some relevance, here's all my installed programs: (So if you know any offenders you can point them out) I can see it also lists packages I've removed after installing them. Removed packages are listed as "deinstall" and are, obviously, NOT installed or functioning, but their config files remain I assume. I also cannot make my computer hibernate, and if I try to put it to sleep when it's on critical power, it will continue waking up again until it runs so hard out of power it just dies.

Ubuntu :: Computer Will Not Resume From Hibernate/suspend?

Apr 7, 2010

I just got a Dell Inspiron 1764 and am dual booting it with Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10.Whenever I hibernate or suspend, it goes through everything fine, but then when I resume it just boots to a black screen and I have to do a hard shutdown. Is there a fix for this? I know it's a fairly common issue.

Ubuntu :: Suspend / Hibernate Instantly Reboots Computer?

Oct 25, 2010

A weird problem arose a few months ago in my box and has plagued me ever since: the PC immediately reboots whenever I try to suspend or hibernate Ubuntu. It's actually instantaneous, as if I pushed the reset button.Way more days into googling than I wished I had to, I have tried just about every solution related to suspension/hibernation problems,but none really applies to the exact situation I'm experiencing, since most are about being unable to resume after suspending/hibernating, and in my case it seems the system is instantly killed and therefore doesn't even start said operation.

After rebooting, applications behave exactly as when the PC is hard-reset, which I think is an indication that running processes aren't being properly terminated and the system is just going down abruptly (if the less-than-a-second it takes to go down and restart the boot sequence isn't obvious enough).Before you ask:

everything was working fine before;

upgraded to Maverick but the problem remained;

every suspend/hibernate method that I know of (GUI, CLI) does the same;

can't easily test in another OS since I only have Ubuntu installed (no dual-boot or the like);swap partition is larger than RAM; /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume is pointing to the correct swap UUID;

tried several SUSPEND_METHODS and video-related options in /etc/default/acpi-support;

enabling/disabling the acpid and acpi_support services in BUM (Boot-Up Manager) has no effect;

enabling/disabling BIOS STR (Suspend-To-RAM)-related options has no effect;

unsetting NvAGP or setting it to 1 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf has no effect;

adding/removing the agpgart and intel_agp modules to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf has no effect;

installing the hibernate package has no effect;

not sure what I'd be looking for, but nothing strikes me as relevant in /var/log/messages.

This is really strange. May it be a hardware failure of some sort? What else can I try to work this one out or at the very least understand what's happening?

Software :: Computer Will Not Restore From Hibernate - Just Does A Normal Boot - But Suspend To Ram Is Working

Mar 8, 2011

I have Debian 6 (squeeze), I have also seen this under Ubuntu (can not remember how I fixed it).

I can hibernate, but when I switch on the system cold boots (it does not restore previous session).

Note suspend works fine. Have looked in /var/log/pm-suspend.log Shows for each suspend suspend block a resume suspend block, but hibernate hibernate' is not followed by resume hibernate` ( I assume that this is not correct. )

Update on what I have discovered: I have discovered that the uswsusp package is missing from debian squeeze. I could get it from testing or unstable repository, but have to be careful about not pulling in other dependencies. I would like to know if it will fix it. Is uswsusp needed for hibernate. Or should pm-utils be enough. (suspend it ram is working fine.)

Ubuntu :: Win 7 Unable To Hibernate Under Dualboot

May 8, 2010

I have recently installed OpenSuse with GRUB boot-loader on my Vaio FW series laptop. I had to uninstall it because it caused Windows 7 to be unable to hibernate. I installed other distros (Fedora 11 and others) and the same problem recurred. This lead me to the conclusion that the problem is with the boot-loader (as my research suggested)..It has been months now, and I have not found any proper solutions to this yet. Linking this to Ubuntu, I recently downloaded and burned Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, however, I am still reluctant to install it until I know a solution is available. Has anyone had Linux-Windows 7 dualboot and also faced problems with hibernation/stand-by?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Suspend Or Hibernate?

Feb 12, 2011

My Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop Lenovo T400 is not able to suspend or hibernate. Whenever I click Suspend or Hibernate in Startup options of the OS: * the moon LED on the bottom of the lid flashes a few seconds, the screen quickly shows something like "some devices fail to suspend, error 5", * and then the moon LED goes off and the display still has ambient light illumination. I suppose in suspend or hibernation state, the display should have no illumination, just like when the laptop is turned off, right? * If I press any key, the unlock screen dialogue will pop out. I have installed 'acpi-support' and 'hibernate 1.99-1.1'. But I don't know how to use these methods to suspend or hibernate my OS. Are they by commands in terminate, or can they be called by clicking Suspend or Hibernate in Startup options of the OS? For example, I type the hibernation command and it shows something is missing although I have installed "tuxonice-userui" ( I don't know if it will provide Tuxonice binary signature file):

Code:
$ sudo hibernate
hibernate:Warning: Tuxonice binary signature file not found.

OpenSUSE :: Unable To Hibernate With 11.2

I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 instead of 11.1 and installed a new kernel 2.6.33. And now I have a problem. When I try Shutdown -> Hibernate under simple user my screen becomes black and nothing happens. Then I move my mouse or press an key and I see my desktop and a window that asks me to enter my root password. I thought there is some problem with permissions so I logged in as a root and tried to hibernate but everything went the same way except there was no window to enter root pass. I checked my kernel config and hibernate is on there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Turn Off Computer After Upgrading To 11.04

May 3, 2011

After I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04, I could normally turn off my computer. Every time when I tried to turn off the computer by pressing the 'shut down the computer' button at the upper right corner of the screen and selecting 'Shut down', it will first appear as if it is shutting down normally, but in less than half minute, it stops at a console-like screen with the last few lines of text

Code:

gnal 15, shutting down
init: dbus main process (775)
killed by TERM signal
init: Disconnected from system bus

and then stopped there. I then have to manually and physically power off the computer.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Turn Wifi On After Windows Hibernate

Sep 1, 2011

I own an Acer Aspire 5552g. I have installed 2 systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. Everything works fine except wifi. There is a lot of threads connected to this topic, but none has solved my problem yet. The problem occurs when I hibernate Windows and then load ubuntu - I get unable to turn wifi on. As rfkill says - it is hard blocked. It wouldn't be a problem if i had a hard switch for wifi. but I only have fn+F3 for that, which somehow fails to work in my situation.

Code:

igor@igor-Aspire-5552G:~$ rfkill list
1: phy1: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes

If I reboot Windows and then start ubuntu - everything's fine and working. fn+F3 turns wifi on and off as expected. I will provide some more info: when wifi's working:

Code:

igor@igor-Aspire-5552G:/sys/class/rfkill/rfkill1$ cat state

1 when it doesn't:

Code:

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Stalled At Upgrading Stage - Hung Up ?

Oct 5, 2010

I have a little (well, don't think it's easy to solve) issue - my computer stalled at irqbalance (set up), /etc/init/irqbalance.conf (installing, but hung up).

So, my question is what to do? Should I just push the button for 6 seconds, unplug the power cord, or what? It's been like this for 5 hours, I thought it'd go away, but no. Of course, I'll leave it for night, but there has to be a way out. I don't want to reinstall the whole OS, I have lots of programs (and files, actually, too) in there. So, if you know what's the reason and how to deal with it, please tell me. Thank you. I know there are many geniuses in there. I launched updater yesterday, oct.3, and pushed install button only today.

Fedora Networking :: Unable To Use Network When Hibernate The Vista

Nov 6, 2010

I just installed FEDORA 14 on my PC which already had Vista. I am able to dual boot through the GRUB boot loader. I am facing an issue where wired network in FEDORA stops working if I hibernate Vista. I really would like to be able to hibernate both to quicken the startup times.

Here are the steps:

1. Boot to Fedora (everything works fine including wired network)

2. Hibernate Fedora

3. Boot to Vista (everything works fine including networking)

4. Hibernate Vista

5. Boot to Fedora. It loads up fine, but wired network status icon keeps spinning and then results in a kernel package crash. I already reported the crash to Fedora.

6. Hibernate Fedora and boot to Vista (Vista resumes fine from hibernation and everything works in Vista including networking).

Is Fedora supposed to work when both Fedora and Vista are hibernated in a dual boot PC?If I shut down Vista, and then resume Fedora, networking works fine. So there is something in Vista hibernation that causes Fedora networking to fail. This issue remains even if Fedora is restarted (not hibernate/resume).

Fedora :: Upgrading Dbus-Libs But Computer Will Not Boot

Oct 21, 2010

I've been having problems with Dolphin hanging on me and I found out that the problem is due to something with dbus 1.2x. So I downloaded the source for dbus 1.3.1 and proceeded to update dbus by incrementally uninstalling and installing all of the packages it requires. Today I noticed that both dbus-libs 1.24 and dbus-libs 1.3.1 were installed, so I went to get rid of the 1.2 version so that yum would stop telling me there was a conflict.

This is what I did:
Code:
su
rpm -e --nodeps dbus-libs
rpm -Uvh file:///root/rpmbuild/RPMS/X86_64/dbus-libs(versionNum).rpm

I ran that once and restarted, but I think that something happened the first time because rather than it replacing the 1.2x version with 1.3.1 all that was left was 1.2x. So I did the same process as the last time, but after removing dbus-libs I forgot the path to the RPMbuild so I closed konsole and tried to open Dolphin. Well, obviously that's not going to work. So then I, even more stupidly, restarted... And now Fedora won't boot up. How do I reinstall dbus-libs without a bootable Fedora?

Software :: Installed Fedora 13 X86_64 And Unable To Hibernate - Screen Just Goes Dark

Jun 11, 2010

I've installed Fedora 13 x86_64 and am not able to hibernate (though suspend works fine). This is the case either with or without the proprietary Nvidia drivers from rpmfusion. When I click System -> Shut Down -> Hibernate, the screen just goes dark. Moving the mouse activates the display and the password confirmation box appears. Judging by the disk activity light, nothing is written to disk. Swap space is configured correctly.

Looking at the last few lines of /var/log/pm-suspend.log I see this:

It looks like grub (or the absence of grub.conf) is interfering. Problem is, I'm not even using Fedora's grub to boot the system. I'm dual booting with Ubuntu 8.04 and am using that grub. The section from that grub's menu.lst is:

But of course Ubuntu 8.04 is pre grub2 so how do I satisfy Fedora's grub.config without messing this up?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Use Dual Monitors After Upgrading To 11.04?

May 3, 2011

I just upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10 (which I had to reinstall after upgrading to 11.04 beta and attempting to install gnome 3 but I digress) and now my monitors are permanantly stuck on clone.When I go into monitor preferences and uncheck same image in all monitors I get a popup error

"The selected configuration for displays could not be appliedrequested position/size for CTRC 148 is outside the allowed limit : position=(1680,0), size=(1680,1050) maximum=(1920,1920)"

What I want to do is set one monitor to 1680x1050 and the other to 1920x1080 but basically it is telling me it needs a resolution higher than this seemingly arbitrary number...in my past adventures with this I was able to change some Xorg.conf file to increase this maximum but I think that was 10.10 and now I cannot find a file that has that setting in it.
