Does anyone who has upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 through update manager have this a little bit annoying problem that the screen comes a little late after grub loaded it never happened before.It occurred when it said to restart the system first i thought it may be on first time but it is still load little late?

I updated to 11.o4.
However, on startup Ubuntu has two generic and two recovery logins now.
All of them work, but I like having just one of each.
Is one maybe a partitioned install now.
How do I check and how do I get rid of one.
I would keep the partitioned one. If that's what happened.
After making a new install of Maverick, it lets me login but then drops me on a desktop that is empty apart from the menu and taskbar. That's not a problem in itself, but nothing responds when I click it. The mouse pointer moves, but I can't click anything. Before logging in, I can click stuff on the login screen, so the mouse as such works.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded a machine this morning from 9.04 to 9.10 and it went off without a hitch. I then began another upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and it appears to have hung. Everything worked fine up through getting new packages, but when installing the upgrades; it got to Unpacking replacement javascript-common ... it opened a terminal window and stopped. It still says about 20 minutes remaining but it's been saying that for about half an hour. Is there any way I can get it to resume? What do I do now?

I upgraded to Lynx.When I plug in a USB drive, the drive icon no longer appears on my desktop.If I go to Places/Computer it shows up.And once I open it, the icon appears on the desktop.

I do not have akmod or kmod on this machine.I can get to a terminal, I have an SSH Server I installed before it broke. When I press ESC at the boot screen the last thing I see says "Late init script for live image"
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm considering upgrading my old fileserver from ubuntu 8.10 to 10.4, but i've got single concern, I have a 5TB sofware raid 5, that i realy don't want to loose in the process. And since it's almost full (below 1TB free), i can't do a full backup.
Is there any problem in with this, if i do the upgrade? i have to upgrade 8.10 to 9.4 to 9.10 to 10.04?
I set my fstab to auto mount one of my partitions in ~/Music.It works perfectly, but there is always the icon in the desktop pointing to my partition with the name "40 GB FileSystem". The idea behind mounting it automatically to ~./Music was for the partition to be transparent to me...Is there a way to remove that icon from the desktop and from the Places menu?

Yes, if my wife logs on it's on her desktop. If I switch user it will not appear and I can't access it. It's a 'freeagent' hard drive
View 3 Replies View RelatedWell, wouldn't you just know it? I encountered problems when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 with update-manager. What a surprise. Anyway, here are the problems:1. Cannot enable desktop effects. Error appears after searching for drivers.
2. 2-3 minute boot times. Used to be 40 seconds. It spends 2 *minutes* in the BIOS before actually starting Ubuntu.
3. The volume controls on my laptop's keyboard now control PCM rather than Master, so everything is horrifically loud past three clicks, and two quiet under that.
4. The bootsplash displays at 1280x800, my monitor's resolution, and looks pretty. The log in screen, however, switches to what looks like 1024x768. When I log in it changes back to 1280x800.
5. Cannot boot into Windows from grub. When I select Windows, a blinking cursor appears in the top left corner and stays there. Nothing happens
Desktop goes blank after boot, then re-appears when shutdown. How do I fix? I turn on computer, it starts fine with the usual green boot screen, the little bar progresses then the screen goes blank. Then when I go to turn off (push power button), the desktop re-appears. What can i do to fix? I need my desktop back (I haven't made any changes to my system since last boot, and I have turned off, pulled cables out, put them in etc...it must be a software issue) I'm using OpenSuse 11.1 Gnome 32 bit

During that time, I can't start any applications. This happens on both desktop PC's, very frustrating and not present with 11.3.

The upgrade went fine and I was asked to restart my computer. I did so and was presented with the screen that says "Ubuntu" and 5 red dots. View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.
I could not bear once again going through the months of torment, searching forums and tearing of hair involved in getting 9.10 to install and get everything working the way I wanted if I had to do a clean install again. Mostly because I can't remember how I got round most of the issues... code...
ok did an regular (not version change) upgrade on friends pc and now have no desktop?
Boot loads to console and can logon to console but startx fails, checking logs it says it can't load nvidia module. As upgrade had included kernal i tried to boot to older kernel but this failed with grub error.
I tried console install of nvidia-current and nvidia-module (not sure if correct name but was nvidia kernel module) but still no joy.
I can install 6.06 desktop, but would like to move to a 8.04 server. I know I can do an upgrade from 6.06 desktop to 8.04 desktop, but how about to server? cdrom issues and heartache associated with other means of alternate iso installs are beating me up.

The update went well, but after the reboot and login, the default desktop background is loaded, but there is no status bar to select programs, access system settings, etc. How can I fix the desktop to include the status bar so that I can use the system? I can right click on the desktop and it gives me options to create launchers, etc.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI used Kubuntus kpackagekit to upgrade to natty. The process started well, it downloaded everything and started to install 11.04. But then all of a sudden during Installing stage I got this error message:
"Distribution upgrade process exited with code 1"
and
"Your system might be unusable".
And it sure is unusable because after reboot I can only see Kubuntu 10.10 loading screen and
"The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present".
There also are options for either skip mounting or manually mount hard disks. I don't have a clue how to manually mount... I get same message if I try to boot to safe mode. Does this mean I have to go to clean install? I really don't want to do that because last time it took a couple of months to get ubuntu to co-operate well enough with my laptop.
Just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04.Under 10.10, moving windows, scrolling, and compiz's expo were smooth as silk with my Radeon HD 5450 using the fglrx driver. After the upgrade, these things are very choppy, to the point that it feels like I'm running without hardware acceleration. The weird thing is, the system tells me I have acceleration --- Compiz is still running and I'm able to use expo and other effects, glxinfo reports direct rendering, and the Additional Drivers control panel tells me I'm still using fglrx (I even tried re-installing it, to no avail). OpenGL screensavers work fine, and glxgears gives me 1550 fps. Could it be that compiz is somehow not using hardware acceleration, even though my driver offers it? This happens in both Unity and Classic desktop.
