I need ssh to connect to other servers, but I want to disable the sshd server on Ubuntu 9.10 because I don't want incoming connections to my workstation.
Disabling sshd won't effect my ability to use the ssh client to connect to other servers, correct? How do I go about disabling the ssh server on Ubuntu 9.10?
I tried to install vsftpd on my server and while the installation went fine, I can't run

sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart with a warning telling me to use the service utility. Not only that, but despite the port being open it won't allow me to log in, it just hangs, and I have local users enabled (I've used the default .conf file). Does dbus not come installed in 10.04, and if I did install it would it make a difference for restarting the service? Are there further steps needed not available in the tutorial on the Ubuntu Server Guide for 10.04 to enabling local user authentication? -edit- Figured it out, dbus wasn't installed, vsftpd is working fine now.
I install and configure the vncserver following and reading 1000papers, but all of this present the same problem; when i try to connect to my vncserver,recive this mesage: unable connect to socket: No route to host (113) The OS version is Fedora Core 14 and tigervnc-server i try different solutions including:Allow TCP connection modifing files /etc/gdm/custom.conf and /usr/share/gdm/gdm.chemas Disable SELinux removing iptables Here follow the vncserver configuration:

The ip address of the vncserver is correct because i can do ssh on it. Where or what can i do?
I am using Squeeze and all appears OK at first... I have a DHCP lease, PING to router works, apache servering fine in and outside the network, Epiphany seems to connects to default debian.org only, BUT I cannot connect to any other websites and apt will not connect to any servers. I installed once, tried to fix problem, gave up and reinstalled and still have the same problem.
I unistalled Network Manager thinking that was the problem, but still the same issue. Is there a default firewall blocking certain connections or am I missing something I'm supposed to know about? I installed some non-free firmware in the beginning of install and all worked... and I connected fine when downloading packages during install.
Problem with my Internet connection. I can't connect to the update servers. I don't know why. It's a brand new installation, not a week old yet. I can't install the support for restricted media for example. The servers won't refresh in YaST. It tells me it can't download the repomd.xml.asc.
The other problem is that some servers on the web won't load for me either.
For example, I get most of my local news from The Toronto Star, and I can't connect to it's website at all.
I can from Windows (I dual boot) but not SUSE. I don't think its a problem limited to that one website either. I am able to connect to most websites though.

I've been having trouble with a newly configured server running on Ubuntu 10.04.1.
I can login fine via SSH the first them. Then if I want to open another session from another terminal tab, I kicks me right away. The server shows me the greeting message but then the connection immediately closes.
I can't seem find any info on this.
I am running Ubuntu Server 10.04 on an old desktop PC. But after some uptime (not sure exactly how long) it simply loses connectivity. Odddly, I can get on to the Server (Plug a monitor and keyboard in) and connect out (ie use lynx to go online or ping various websites) but I can't connect in from anywhere. I can't connect on the same LAN and I can't connect to it from the WAN IP address.
I have http, squid http proxy, webmin, and ssh running. I can connect to none of them when this happens. I am using ufw (I don't need the versatility of iptables... too complicated for my needs). ummm I can't think of anything else extremely pertinent....
I just recently installed ubuntu 11.04 server on an emachines etower, 400MHz intel celeron, 256MB RAM. I've tried installing apache2 and python3, but cannot get it to connect to the internet. while I understand how to work in a command line, I'm not sure what to do to diagnose the problem. I can list all the packages if it would help. (it's a fresh install so far), as well as the ethernet statuses (two cards for a firewall type setup)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have openssh installed and it works great right out of the box. However, I don't want people accessing everything on my machine. My machine is behind NAT and ufw firewall. I have configured both so that port 22 is open. I've added the new users I want to have limited access and assigned them to group "sambashare" (just because its convenient.)
When the bottom bit of my config file "/etc/ssh/sshd_config" is set as shown below, everything works great:

Whenever I make the change to enable "ChrootDirectory" so that it limits the users access, I simply remove the # and it looks like this:

However, thats when I start running into problems. When I try logging in with Filezilla; I am not able to connect and this is the response I get from Filezilla:

I'm trying to set up a private irc server. I install ircd-ircu, modify the configuration file, restart the daemon, and everything works great. After the next server reboot, the server shows the daemon is running, but I can no longer connect to the server from my irc client. I've tried restarting the daemon with no luck. I can then uninstall and reinstall it with the same outcome. Everything works initially, but after rebooting, the irc client can't connect..

I installed vsftpd in FC6 and made it started and listen. I can use ftp in local machine to connect ftp on another machines, but I cannot connect the ftp of local machine from other computers in the office (the same network). I can use ssh to connect the machine, so I don't think it should be a firewall problem.
But when I type ftp and the IP try to connect the ftp, after a long time show up:

I am trying to set up my computer as a server for things like minecraft and ventrilo. I cannot get anybody (myself included) to connect to the servers I set up. I think it has to do with my ports not forwarding properly, or the computer using ipv6 instead of ipv4 for some strange reason. I say this because I KNOW I set up the port forwarding in my routers setting correctly, but when i browse to a port checking tool, it says they are not. I'm going to load ubuntu server to a computer just for testing and learning. There is one ethernet card on this computer that will only be used occasionally to connect to the internet. This computer will not have any computers or routers connected to it. So my question is, once installed and running, will DHCP just sit quietly and wait for a request or is it going to complain a lot that it is not finding any other computers?
