I want to share the wireless connection from an Ubuntu machine with an old lap top via the wired Ethernet cards. the old laptop doesn't have wire less. the Ubuntu machine is 10.04 LTS -the Lucid Lynx.
View 1 RepliesI'm new to Ubuntu - I've decided to give Ubuntu Studio a go as an alternative to Windows. However, after installing it, neither of my network cards work. I have a Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG wireless card, and a Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Wired card. Neither work, And I'm not sure how to. I've tried searching, and have come up with the .tgz file here, but I have no idea what to do with it I'm concentrating on the wireless card for the moment, seeing as that will be the main one I use.

The only guide I found regarding this (I must admit, I didn't have much time to put into research), was dating back to 2005, and although doable, seemed somewhat confusing. Ok, so I've gotten tired of my router, and I've decided to make my own using IPFire as the OS. Right now I'm looking for ethernet cards that I can use for the green network, but I don't know if I can use 2 for the same network. I'm trying to get 4 ports at 1000 Mbs, and the only thing I've been able to find so far that's within my price range is a card from startech that has 2 ports, but would I be able to use 2 for the green network?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two motherboards, MSI-6702 (64 bit single channel) and MSI-7511 (64 bit dual channel), I have two identical D-Link wireless cards and am running Kubuntu 10.10 on both systems. 7511 recognizes both wireless cards and connects to the Internet.The 6702 shows wireless grayed out on the connections page. The built-in Ethernet card has given out on both. I think I disabled it on the first system to have an Ethernet problem and wonder if I need to do it on the second. I would have tried it already but can' t remember how.

If I login to a windows 7 instance on this dual boot laptop then the ehternet works just fine. So it's not a hardware, cable or router issue. The card even gets an ip, but I can't connect to the internet.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm stuck after a clean install of FC14 on an old Everex StepNote (Doing this for a friend). I tried Ubuntu on it first (because it's so easy) but had horrible stability issues and terminal commands wouldn't respond - however Ubuntu detected and ran the eth0 port just fine. FC14 detects my ethernet NIC, but it won't work.
Here are my details.
lspci outputs this for my NIC:

Here is what I have tried so far - with no luck:
- I have toggled the networking switch on the laptop and had no luck.
- Downloaded Via's VT6102 drivers for Fedora Core, but they don't support kernel 2.6.35.*
- Run ifconfig to manually assign an IP address - which it DID take and did route add default gw as well.
- Did a ifconfig eth0 down and up as well.
After all that, I still have a "disconnected" wired connection (and yes, I did check the cable - it works just fine in my personal machine.
I have a fedora 10 box with two network card on eth0 I have a pppoe connection to the internet, on second card eth1 I share my internet connection end I set up a samba server but I don't know if the settings are good. How to do this settings right to work fine, the ip are assigned by dhcp I don't use any static ip .When I try to browse the internet from the other computers some site's like {.com ; .org ; .info} are block, other site from {.ro} are working. Someone tell me something about turn off all my filters, but I don't know where to find this filter to turn it off. And when I use samba I can't have and internet access or vice versa. View 2 Replies View RelatedJust installed Fedora 14 from the Live CD i686 on my Dell Inspiron 1521. I can't connect to the SpeedTouch 585 on either wireless broadcom card or the wired Ethernet card.
I can connect to it from the same Laptop on the Vista which is on dual boot on the same laptop.
Further confusing is that I ran Fedora 14 and connected to another SpeedTouch today.
Already checked the Channel on the wireless nic and it's on the same one as the SpeedTouch.
I've been struggling with this a bit now, and I'm not sure what the problem is. I have a laptop with a BCM4401 Ethernet card as well as a BCM4311 Wireless card. The wireless card works great out of the box, I'm able to connect with it perfectly. The problem is the ethernet card. Here is the situation: The NetworkManager menu doesn't list "Wired Networks" at all (ie. it doesn't say "not managed", it just only lists Wireless networks) Going into Network Connections, there is an "Auto eth0" entry ifconfig shows eth0 (which I assume means NetworkManager isn't managing eth0) I have edited /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf to say managed=true I have edited /etc/network/interfaces to remove any mention of eth0 (all that's left is the "lo" lines) So I'm not sure why eth0 is still showing up when I run ifconfig, and why Network Manager is not managing it. Any ideas?

The MAC address of the "Auto eth0" entry is 00:1C:23:8F:D4:39, the same as the eth1 entry that ifconfig spits out.
I can not get my network to work.Wireless shows no networks at all and wired the ethernet light does not even turn on. I have dpne heaps of searching but i can not seem to find a solution.

I am basically wanting to use my Ubuntu 10.10 computer as a router. Note: Before you say just get a router please note that I am poor/cheap. I have two ethernet connections and one wireless connection on my netbook. I want to share the internet connection that is going into one of the ethernet cards through the other ethernet card and the wireless card.

The 2nd Ethernet card already has working internet, but when I connect to the Wireless card (through an Adhoc network), it cannot get an IP (I believe).
I just installed (dual-boot with Vista) Ubuntu 9.10 in my Toshiba Satellite M300. The problem is that (when using Ubuntu 9.10), its network is dead, both wireless and wired. The LEDs of the LAN port don't even blink. My wifi is not also detected. Both of my wifi device and LAN port are functional when using Vista.

Wireless router <=========> Laptop <-----> Switch <-----> PS3
---- wired

Both laptop and ps3 have static ip addresses
The reason for this is I can connect to the internet on my ps3 through my laptop, and I can stream from my laptop to ps3 through wired connection. This works fine in windows 7 all I had to do was right click bridge connections. As I dual boot I don't want to have to make any changes to the settings on the ps3.
My interfaces are:
eth0 - wired
wlan0 - wireless
I installed bridge-utils and created a bridge and added both eth0 and wlan0 to it. However I could not get it to work. I have also tried internet sharing through network manager and firestarter.
I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptop, dual-boot. Everything is working except the networking. It can see wireless networks, and when I type in the password for my wireless network, it tries to connect, then asks for the password again. When I plug in the Ethernet cable, again it tries to connect, but after a few seconds gives up and tells me I am now offline.

I'm not a total newbie, but run into some strange problems with my installation of Lucid.Everything was working fine yesterday. I shut down the laptop and powered it up this morning and had problems with network. I have two NICs (wired and wireless). Both are set to pick up IP settings from DHCP and both do, however when using wired network I can't communicate with outside world - can't even ping the default gateway (but pinging 127.0.0.1 or IP address of the NIC no problem, so stack should be OK).When on the wireless network everything works fine (otherwise I would struggle to write this post ).What is very weird though is that I have a VMWare Player installed and using Windows VM on wired network works just great!
I noticed that when you're persistent it happens that you can ping but huge chunks of traffic are lost (e.g. packet 1-10 would pass, 11-40 would be lost, 41-59 would pass and so on).I restarted Ubuntu, tried shutting down interfaces, disabling networking and nothing helped. I don't recall performing any changes (at least that I would be aware of).Can anyone suggest something?BTW. This is not DNS issue as both IP addresses and FQDNs do not work. When I refer to using a given network (wired or wireless) the other one is down with ifconfig command...
I am unable to connect to any network, wired or wireless. Network-manager and wicd are both gone, as in no longer installed. Please don't tell me to apt-get anything. I have no network connection. I have tried downloading packages for nm onto a usb stick only to find myself in dependency hell which ended with the impassible error "Requires installation of untrusted packages".
