I just installed (dual-boot with Vista) Ubuntu 9.10 in my Toshiba Satellite M300. The problem is that (when using Ubuntu 9.10), its network is dead, both wireless and wired. The LEDs of the LAN port don't even blink. My wifi is not also detected. Both of my wifi device and LAN port are functional when using Vista.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running ubuntu 9.10 on a dell xps m1530 laptop dual booting with windows 7. I am trying to achieve the following setup.
Wireless router <=========> Laptop <-----> Switch <-----> PS3
---- wired
==== wireless
Both laptop and ps3 have static ip addresses
The reason for this is I can connect to the internet on my ps3 through my laptop, and I can stream from my laptop to ps3 through wired connection. This works fine in windows 7 all I had to do was right click bridge connections. As I dual boot I don't want to have to make any changes to the settings on the ps3.
My interfaces are:
eth0 - wired
wlan0 - wireless
I installed bridge-utils and created a bridge and added both eth0 and wlan0 to it. However I could not get it to work. I have also tried internet sharing through network manager and firestarter.
I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptop, dual-boot. Everything is working except the networking. It can see wireless networks, and when I type in the password for my wireless network, it tries to connect, then asks for the password again. When I plug in the Ethernet cable, again it tries to connect, but after a few seconds gives up and tells me I am now offline.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm not a total newbie, but run into some strange problems with my installation of Lucid.Everything was working fine yesterday. I shut down the laptop and powered it up this morning and had problems with network. I have two NICs (wired and wireless). Both are set to pick up IP settings from DHCP and both do, however when using wired network I can't communicate with outside world - can't even ping the default gateway (but pinging 127.0.0.1 or IP address of the NIC no problem, so stack should be OK).When on the wireless network everything works fine (otherwise I would struggle to write this post ).What is very weird though is that I have a VMWare Player installed and using Windows VM on wired network works just great!
I noticed that when you're persistent it happens that you can ping but huge chunks of traffic are lost (e.g. packet 1-10 would pass, 11-40 would be lost, 41-59 would pass and so on).I restarted Ubuntu, tried shutting down interfaces, disabling networking and nothing helped. I don't recall performing any changes (at least that I would be aware of).Can anyone suggest something?BTW. This is not DNS issue as both IP addresses and FQDNs do not work. When I refer to using a given network (wired or wireless) the other one is down with ifconfig command...
I'm new to Ubuntu - I've decided to give Ubuntu Studio a go as an alternative to Windows. However, after installing it, neither of my network cards work. I have a Intel Pro Wireless 3945ABG wireless card, and a Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Wired card. Neither work, And I'm not sure how to. I've tried searching, and have come up with the .tgz file here, but I have no idea what to do with it I'm concentrating on the wireless card for the moment, seeing as that will be the main one I use.

There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:
- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.
I've installed F10 on my laptop since few days and I'm facing an annoying networking issue: the network connection seems to work well when, suddently, it goes down for a while, and then come back.This happens with both wired and wireless (Intel PRO/ Wireless 3945ABG) connection.

Well now My wireless is working great but for some reason my Wired (auto eth0) no longer works. It just says disconnected and its grayed in. I'm pretty much a newbie but did try a few things like:

However I've had no luck. This Broadcom driver seems to have knocked out my wired network.
I just installed Lucid Lynx on my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop. The problem I'm having is that my wired network card has died on me prior to installation. I'm having the hardest time finding the required files to make my Broadcom BCM4311 wireless card work without being able to download any packages from the web. Can I make it automatically "just work", so that the right network is chosen for Internet traffic? Otherwise, what's the workaround?
I have a Mandriva linux box connected by cable to my router. When I stream audio using this box it crashes all the wireless computers on my network. There is no effect on wired computers. All but the one computer are windows (xp or vista). The affected wireless computers are not able to even find my wireless network. I have to reboot the router to get them online.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am in need of some help trying to get my wireless working. I have a compaq presario f557us and my wireless card just seems to be dead. I got this laptop a few years ago and I tried installing ubuntu 7.04. The wireless part did not work out of the box (it took a lot of tinkering but finally got it working by using ndiswrapper). Later I did an OS reinstall but tried ubuntu 8.10 this time and the card was recognized with no problems, I just needed to use the proprietary drivers that ubuntu recommended. Finally I decided to give 10.04 a try. I don't know if doing an "apt-get upgrade" would've been fine but it's too late for that now; I did a fresh install and the wireless part seems dead.
I already tried installing ndiswrapper as I did before:
$ ndiswrapper -l
bcmwl5 : driver installed
later I tried the fwcutter way:
$ bcm43xx-fwcutter -i bcmwl5.sys

It looks like my laptop's wireless chipset (Broadcom) has/is dying. It won't work anymore on my Lucid install whereas it was working perfectly. The warrenty is long expired.
lspci brings up nothing about it anymore, it once did.
I booted my laptop into Win7 and it no longer finds it either. The manual slider switch on my HP Pavillion dv6000 is in the on position but the light is yellow.
It will very rarely work on Win7 now.
I can't afford a new laptop just now so it looks like I need an external wireless adaptor. I have (open busses) USB, cardbus/54, and a small firewire port. It does not pcmcia or other busses.
Any particular chipsets to look for or avoid?

I have FC 12 install on a Compaq nx9600 that comes with a Broadcom BMC4306 wireless card. I'm not sure what my kernel is, but I have all of the updates for FC 12.Whenever my laptop resumes from Hibernation/Suspend my Enable Wireless check box in the Network Manager is greyed out and it will not come back till I reboot the computer. Is there any one out there that can help with this problem, as I do not want to disable my Hibernation/Suspend as I tend to forget to turn the laptop off for a few days on end, and this beast sucks a lot of power so it is a drain on my power bill.

As I state in the post, I ran fine from the original installed version, 8.10, through 2 upgrades (to 9.04 and 9.10). Now none of them work (When the problems began I re-installed each of them in turn in order to test).

Today my laptop battery died and after i plugged it in and restarted it said that networking was not enabled. hitting the networking key didn't re-enable it. i right clicked the wireless icon in the tray and clicked "enable networking" and it enabled it but no networks showed up as available and the networking status light on my keyboard stayed red.
