Ubuntu Networking :: Two Ethernet Ports And Share Internet Via A Switch

Apr 30, 2011

Just recently got a new rig, and was wondering, is there a way to share internet via a switch. I understand the problems with switches is that they dont assign IPs like routers do, but if my ubuntu machine worked like a router by assigning IPs, could it work? Current setup is as such. I have one ubuntu machine with 1 ethernet port (this shall be the main preferably) 1 mac with a single ethernet port 1 modem with a single ethernet port that cannot assign more than one IP address. And a 5 port switch. Would it be possible to place the modem into the switch, get the ubuntu machine to receive the IP address, and broadcast all other address' to everyone else via the same switch and ethernet cable?

OpenSUSE Network :: Router Configuration - Get Computer To Share Internet With Laptop

Dec 29, 2009

I've just spent the entire night trying to get my computer to share Internet with my laptop. I have DSL Internet with the modem configured to bridge mode. On the openSUSE server I have two NIC's. When setting up the DSL (pppoe) it created a dsl0 which is using the NIC eth0. So now I have dsl0, eth0, and eth1 I configured eth1 for DHCP server. When I connect with my laptop using DHCP it gets an IP address just fine. However I can't access the Internet. I think my problem is in the Kernel IP Routing Table. Here is the output from /sbin/route -n

[Code]...

dsl0 obtains IP from ISP eth0 is set to DHCP although that confuses me because how can the same NIC have two IP Addresses? eth1 static IP 10.30.60.1

Ubuntu :: Share Internet From 1st Ethernet AND To 2nd Ethernet And Wifi Card?

Feb 8, 2011

I am basically wanting to use my Ubuntu 10.10 computer as a router. Note: Before you say just get a router please note that I am poor/cheap. I have two ethernet connections and one wireless connection on my netbook. I want to share the internet connection that is going into one of the ethernet cards through the other ethernet card and the wireless card.

DSL-->1sr Eth --> 2nd Eth (currently works)
DSL-->1sr Eth --> Wireless Card (Adhoc) <--(connects with limited connectivity AKA no internet)

The 2nd Ethernet card already has working internet, but when I connect to the Wireless card (through an Adhoc network), it cannot get an IP (I believe).

OpenSUSE Network :: Create Network Bridge / Device Hooked Up Via Ethernet Had No Internet Connectivity?

Feb 25, 2011

I'm on opensuse 11.4 (11.3 won't work with my monitor).

My computer gets internet through wireless and I want to share that internet through its ethernet port. So far I've tried using Knetworkmanager to create a network bridge between my wireless and wired connections. I created a new wired connection and shared it using the ip address settings. I was able to get both connections active, but the device hooked up via ethernet had no internet connectivity.

I also tried this command:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

but another test resulted in the same fashion (no internet on wired). I believe anything I add to /proc should have an immediate effect, correct?

OpenSUSE Network :: Keep WiFi Internet While A PC-to-PC Ethernet Network Is Active?

Jan 31, 2011

I often use an Ethernet cable to connect my computer to another computer for various purposes. But when I do that, I cannot use the internet even though I'm still connected to a WiFi access point. I'm presuming that's because openSUSE is trying to reach the internet through the Ethernet cable, which has precedence over WiFi.Is there a way to enable internet usage via WiFi while I'm connected to another computer over Ethernet?

OpenSUSE Network :: Masquerad Internet Using Knetwork Manager - Share The Internet Connection To A Desktop

Jul 5, 2011

OpenSuse 11.4 Asus Netbook 1000H Following other members in the forums I have installed Opensuse 11.4 on the Netbook. In the early days Ubuntu Netbook Remix worked well for me. But this has been discarded, and the "one size fits all" Ubuntu had become slow and cumbersome. So..... onto my post. Opensuse is working well. The install went beautifully.

It detected the Wireless Internet and I am able to get on line. I also need to share the Internet connection to a desktop. This is done via a small network switch. Thus far I cannot do this. I tried to use ifup to configure a static ip but this busted my Wireless configuration. I went back to knetwork manager. Then I tried to set up the wired network using knetwork manager and under IPV4 "share" the connection. But this blanks out any possiblity of a static address and substitutes dhcp. My desktop cannot ping the this dhcp address. Ubuntu had this thing called Firestarter? - from memory. This configured the system to sharing the network.

Ubuntu Networking :: Looking To Share Internet Connection Through Ethernet

Aug 5, 2011

After some fiddling around, I have come to the conclusion my current wifi access point hates my other computer's Broadcom chip or the drivers thereof. So, my current idea is as follows. I would like to use my netbook to connect to the wireless network, and then connect my other computer to it through ethernet. My netbook is dual boot XP and Ubuntu (think Ubuntu is a version behind) and I would be fine to set up this sharing in either and just leave it on as a repeater station. My other computer is dual boot XP and Fedora and I would prefer this work to allow me to have network in both. I have a straight-through cable and have verified that my network card supports the automatic crossing over behavior.

OpenSUSE Network :: Setup Internet Tracking On An 11.3 Computer?

Jul 15, 2010

Is there a good way to set up internet tracking on an openSUSE 11.3 computer? I don't want users visiting porn sites or any other nonsense, and if they do, I want to know about it. Is there a good program that the administrator can set up to report this kind of thing or at least track it? Obviously, this would need to track all websites visited regardless of the application/browser used, and would need to be completely inaccessible to users. I don't want them having the ability to turn it off or circumvent it somehow.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 10.3 Assigning Wrong Drivers To Ethernet Ports (e1000, E1000e)?

Aug 23, 2010

I have loaded Suse 10.3 on a system that has 4 Ethernet ports, all Intel chipsets. 2 ports have the 82571 chipset, 1 port has the 82573 chipset and the last one has the 82567. The 82567 chipset can use the e1000 driver and the 8257x chipsets require the e1000e driver. We are only actually using the 82571 ports.

When the system is booted, the 82567 seems to get bound to the e1000 driver and the 82573 gets bound to the e1000e driver. Doing an "lsmod" I see both drivers loaded. It appears the 82571 drivers are getting bound to the e1000 driver which is a major problem. They work for a while but eventually they lock up with enormous error counts according to "ifconfig". How I know the e1000 driver is bound to the 82571 ports is that when I remove it(modprobe -r e1000) and then try to use one of them, I get a "network unreachable". When e1000 is loaded these ports seem to work fine. I tried modding the file in /etc/sysconfig/hardware that corresponds to the PCI address of these ports(i.e., hwcfg-bus-pci-0000:08:00.0) to force the module to e1000e, but no luck there either.

Networking :: Share An Internet Connection From A Computer With Two NICs ?

Feb 24, 2010

Im posting after reading through a lot of articles explaining the same thing on how to share an internet connection from a computer with two NICs.

I have the following simple setup

When I first followed this guide

I was able to ping between the GW and a client on the LAN but couldn't access the internet from it. So I started to configure different things to get it to work which failed.

Now I can't ping between GW and the LAN. I tried to follow the same guide over again and even flushing the tables but still...

These are my current settings (without any chains).

(this client also has a wireless connection displayed in 'ifconfig')

OpenSUSE Network :: Block All Ports But Port 80 With Iptables (DMZ)?

Jun 25, 2010

I have a Suse 10.3 router with 4 network cards. 1 is to connect to the big network and thereby also the internet, 2 are for 'client' subnets and I want to use the last one as a DMZ. In this DMZ will be a web server which has to be accessible from the other 2 subnets and from the big network. I could do it with a few simple clicks in Yast firewall, but I have some issues with this firewall and there for I want to use it as minimal as possible, using Iptables.

So now I'm struggling a bit with Iptables. Basicly what I'm looking for is how to block all ports but 80 in this last subnet with iptables.

Networking :: Configuring Two Ethernet Ports?

Apr 16, 2010

I have a system with one (sometimes two) ethernet ports, that works happily in an old Fedora 5 build. But I can't get it to work on a new Centos 5.4 build. Original system: One dedicated ethernet port on card always connected to the systems dedicated equipment and no external access (the system is the DHCP master for that network). An optional second USB dongle that is a second ethernet port, used for debugging and development. (This is a DHCP client with full conectivity. In /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts I have ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth1 and a route-eth0. Neither of the ifcfg files needs an explicit HWADDR, which means the same ones work for all boxes. And when one needs to be connected to the network all is fine.

The system is being moved to Centos 5.4, most is working with minimal change, but I am having problems with the ethernet ports. If it only has the on board ethernet connected, all is fine. If you have the USB dongle connected things go wrong: This system brings up the USB ethernet first, and tries to assign it to eth0 (which fails), and then brings up the on board ethernet as eth1 (which also fails). I have tried forcing the behaviour of the network by setting the HWADDR(s), but this does not result in the on board coming up as eth0, it comes up as __tmpxxxx as follows:

ifconfig -a
__tmp226406138 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:80:66:07:A8:63
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

[Code]...

Currently the only solution is to unplug the USB dongle through restart and plug in afterwards, and this wont work when the unit is remote and in the field.
