How do tell an application to open in a specific workspace?

I like to have my C++ IDE in workspace 2, my Java IDE in workspace 3, and my email, browser and miscellaneous in workspace four. I also use a shell script that executes upon log in code...
Of course currently it all opens in the current workspace... Is there a way for me to specify which workspace each command should start in?
I am using ubuntu 10.04 and opensuse 11.3. I would like to know how to assign each application to a specific worksapce. For example，when I open a pdf file, it will be moved to workspace2. When I open a movie, it will be moved to workspace3. In Leopard, "Space" have such features. I would like to know the way to achieve this in ubuntu and opensuse, in an easy way, meaning that just need to install a small package, not a big one , like compiz

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to launch gnome-terminal on a specific workspace (4). I have tried the following :
gnome-terminal -t mytitle; wmctrl -r mytitle -t 3
but this just causes the terminal not to launch.
I have this problem, that I want a specific .exe file to open in Mono, but all other .exe files to open in Wine.
However, the only option there is, are 'Select an application to open XXXX.exe and other files of type "DOS/Windows executable"'
but I just want to open THIS .exe file in mono, and the rest in WINE.
I have been in similar situations before, in that I opened a folder containing music with VLC, and it worked fine, but after that, it assumed that I wanted to open all folders in VLC.
I assume that there must be an option for this, and I can not see why it ain't an option by default.
(I'm using Ubuntu 10.10)
I'm looking into building a media server that will output to 2 channels. I'd like to use Ubuntu however, if there's a better alternative, I'd be open to using it. I'd have 2 audio and video cards for output and what I'm interested in knowing is if there's a way to set the audio output to a specific card per application or workspace. Is there an easy way of doing this?

I have a need to run a specific app as a specific user when the machine boots into init 3. I can not run this as root so I need to specify a user. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this?I usually have to log in and start this application by typing check -D which starts this app and daemonizes it. Normally it was just a case of 'right click' any of the workspace and selecting 'Preferences', setting number of workspaces required and then using the name listbox to name each to desired title. In Maverick only the number of work places can be set; the list of names facility has been deleted from display. The current workspace name displays in the tooltip display as "workspace n", but there seems to be no easy way to change this title.
In 'gconf-editor' under schemas>apps>workspace_switcher_applet>prefs>displ ay_workspace_names it only gives the system message "...can't be edited..."
I have recently dual booted an Old Toshiba laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) It was recommended to me by a friend after XP was becoming unstable. To the Problem : I have downloaded Chromium as the web browser as I am not a fan of Firefox, but every time I launch Chromium... It launches into a random work space and not the one I am working in.. So I cannot open multiple Chromium windows.. So to find where it has launched it, I have to click work space switcher and find it.. If I click Maximise, instead of maximizing it to the work space limits... it makes it go over 2 seperate work spaces..

I use the Gnome Classic DE in 11.04. Last night, safe-upgrade made a small number of package upgrades (three or four). When I rebooted my PC, this morning, my workspace switcher (the four tiny squares in the bottom panel on the right side of the screen) are gone. I use them regularly.Also, is there any history to identify what packages were upgraded last night so I can look for bugs?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am an old XFCE fan, but would like to give Gnome a serious try (it has several things I like a lot).One XFCE feature I am missing is the intuitive capability to drag a window directly to another workspace. I did a bit of research and installed compiz (I am running debian testing on my laptop), but I am still unable to drag windows to another workspace.
Maybe I should tick the right option in compiz configuration manager, but I do not know where to start from. note that I am not after any eyecandy, I just would like to have this cute little feature of XFCE in my gnome environment.
After doing the upgrade per this thread my gnome panel gets bugged when the workspace switcher applet is attached to it. Also the Cairo Dock bugs out with the workspace switcher applet attached to it. I can change desktops with key commands fine. It would just be nice if this could be fixed. I am sticking with gnome 2.32 because of my affinity with Evolution which performs better in 2.32.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo for Windows, I can load up Xming in the background, SSH into a Linux machine, and open up a file with gedit. Gedit appears on my Windows desktop through Xming.
I'm using Ubuntu now, and when I ssh into the same Linux machine, I can't open up gedit and mess with some files.
Is there a Linux version of Xming I have to get? I'm sure there's an easier way, I just don't know it.

I updated from v11.2. to v11.3.I have 4 workspaces defined. The Gnome panel shows only in the first workspace! When I switch to another one, the panel disappears. As you may imagine, this is rather inconvenient. Once I am in another workspace other than 1, my only option is to reboot since there is no way to navigate anywhere. How do I set up the Gnome panel to show in all workspaces?
I am getting no packages listed in Gnome application manager gpk-application 2.27.2. I have tried 'yum clean all' and get the following error messages.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI believe I may have found a bug in Unity. Under the right circumstances an application will jump from the workspace where I left them to my current workspace. This is most noticeable with VirtualBox. I built an Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine so that I could test out new packages before I push them out to the rest of my machines. But the window for the virtual machine constantly appears in my current workspace. It may take a few minutes, or 30 minutes, but it will happen.
I can kind of understand it if a new window appears, but at least with VirtualBox, this happens on a running virtual machine seemingly randomly.
I want to change the application that opens my mp3 files.
At present if I double click an mp3 it opens in the movie viewer for some reason. I know I can use "open with..." to get a file to open in Rythymbox instead, but I have over 800 mp3 files and want to change the default for all of them.
