Ubuntu :: Workspace Launcher Messing Up - Cannot Open Multiple Chromium Windows
Jun 16, 2011
I have recently dual booted an Old Toshiba laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) It was recommended to me by a friend after XP was becoming unstable. To the Problem : I have downloaded Chromium as the web browser as I am not a fan of Firefox, but every time I launch Chromium... It launches into a random work space and not the one I am working in.. So I cannot open multiple Chromium windows.. So to find where it has launched it, I have to click work space switcher and find it.. If I click Maximise, instead of maximizing it to the work space limits... it makes it go over 2 seperate work spaces..

I'm used to use several workspaces (6) for completly different tasks. In the netbook edition, the merged launcher/taskbar shows always ALL programs running on all workspaces. I don't like it, because it becomes confusing to have too many symbols from every workspace, even when on the active one only a few applications run. So is there a way to hide application symbols for applications which don't run on the active workspace?

Would it be possible to make a launcher that checks if a tab with a specified address is open and if it is just opens the browser with the tab selected... if not opens a new tab with the specified address? Not sure if checking chromiums open tabs is possible... maybe this would need a extension of some sort!

I sometimes have two similar files that one works and one doesn't. I would like to compare the differences. But TEXT EDITOR opens two files in two tabs making it impossible to compare the data side by side.
Is there a way to make Text editor open a separate window for each file? Browsers usually have such an option to choose multiple windows or tabs but I can't find away to do this with Text editor.

Every time I boot up ubuntu I usually open 3 terminal windows and ssh into the same server. I would like to either click a shortcut, or run a single terminal command that will do the equivalent.
I came across the "gnome-terminal" command, but I was unable to get it to trigger an ssh command.
Ideally I would like to have a script that I pass in the number of windows I want to open and the server I would like to ssh into for each window.

I'm thinking about upgrading my Windows Vista to Windows 7. I rarely ever use it but I figured that when I do have to use it I would rather use Windows 7.
Will it mess up Ubuntu or GRUB when I do this? Like GRUB not recognizing Ubuntu any more? I don't really know but I just wanted to ask this here just in case.

I am trying to write a bash script to open 1 screen session with multiple windows... each one running a different service. Is this possible? I tried several things, and I can start up multiple sessions really easy.. but not 1 session with multiple windows...
I want this so I can attach to that session and quickly move between the different windows.

I want to run Evolution at starup, but want to place it out of the way on the opposite side of the Compiz cube. In KDE, you can run a command like this:
Code:
kstart --desktop 3 evolution
Is there an equivalent for GNOME/Compiz? I would preferably like to avoid using anything like Devilspie.

I'm getting used to gnome3 one thing still bugs me- why when I switch workspaces on my multiple monitor machine does only the primary monitor change to a different workspace? The secondary monitor (my laptop screen) shows all open windows I put on it plus it's not even shown in the workspace list.

I played a bit with partitions. I'm not an experienced Ubuntu user, neither I have solid understanding of partitioning. And I hardly remember exact actions that led to this problem. I remember that I saw a warning in GParted that said that the partition was out of bounds or something.. But I followed some solution that I found on ubuntuforums and used fdisk to fix that. So, after installation of Ubuntu I couldn't boot into WindowsXP (after choosing Windows entry in grub2 menu I see only blinking cursor on black screen). But what's more important that I can easily mount Windows partition from Ubuntu. Also I tried to boot from Windows repair console and used FIXBOOT command, and copied[url].... and [url].... files to no avail..Here is the summary of what I got now:
Code:
sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders[code].....

I'm running 10.10 32 bit and would like to reformat to 10.10 64 bit. However, I am dual booting with windows 7 under grub. I've had some crap experience (my fault) with grub before and would like to make sure I have a plan. I've downloaded the 10.10 64 bit. Can I simply boot and install 10.10 64 bit without concern of messing up grub? Horror story: Installed ubuntu once before with dual boot and somehow grub couldn't find windows

I have a number of applications that I like to have start when I log in. Is there a way to have them automatically open in a specified workspace? For example, I normally keep my e-mail in workspace 2 ('E-mail').

I use the workspaces a lot.It helps me de clutter my desktop. One thing that does bug me about it though, is that every time I start my PC or laptop I have to move the auto start apps to the workspace I want them on. They always kick off in Workspace 1, I want them in specific spaces.

How do tell an application to open in a specific workspace?
More info:
I like to have my C++ IDE in workspace 2, my Java IDE in workspace 3, and my email, browser and miscellaneous in workspace four. I also use a shell script that executes upon log in code...
Of course currently it all opens in the current workspace... Is there a way for me to specify which workspace each command should start in?

I created a application launcher (type:terminal) to replace the index.php on my apache server (/var/www/) with the index I keep updated on my desktop.
This is the exact script I'm using on the launcher:
My idea was the launcher would delete the current file at /var/www/, and then copy the file on /home/andre/Desktop.
But its not behaving properly, it is deleting both the file in my /var/www/ AND my desktop.

I've dual booted Ubuntu and Windows for years now and I've installed OSx86 on a separate drive which Grub2 picked up automagically and everything has been working great -- except I'm out of space. So I bought a 1.5 TB drive and installed win7 into sda1 (100MB NTFS bootloader for windows) and sda2 (50 GB NTFS windows drive). I now want to install two or three flavors of Linux. I'm thinking Ubuntu 10.04, Debian 5.05, and (if I'm bold enough) gentoo. each in 50GB partitions. I've already partitioned the drive a bit putting a 1.2 TB shared NTFS partition at the end (sda10), and a 2 GB swap parition just before that(sda9) My questions are:
(1) can all my linux distro's share that 2GB swap, or does each need it's own dedicated swap partition (installers generally assume you do)?
(2) can I re-partition space in the middle of the drive without messing with windows(sda1&2) and the shared part. (sda10)?

In a terminal type this:
Code:
'chromium-browser'
I looked all over the internet on how to figure this out and I couldn't find it.
How did I figure it out? I'm running Xubuntu 10.04 and it doesn't seem to let you just drag and drop the shortcut into a panel from the applications menu. You have to add the panel shortcut manually. To do this, right-click a panel and select Add New Items > Launcher. Then right-click the launcher click properties...
Here's where I got stuck. To make a good launcher/shortcut you need to know the command and put in an icon. I couldn't find the command at first so I put in the icon first instead by clicking on the icon icon (not a typo) in the launcher's properties. Select All Icons from the drop-down menu at the top of the icon selection window. Arbitrarily click on any icon and type chromium. Here's where you find your chromium icon and guess what the name of it is? "chromium-browser" This is how I figured out what the heck the command was to open the stupid thing.

I'm having trouble getting Thunderbird to open links using Chromium (chromium-browser).
The default browser is now set to chromium-browser in KDE system settings. I've also tweaked the Thunderbird config network.protocol-handler.app.http and https settings to use chromium-browser or /usr/bin/chromium-browser.
Despite this, Thunderbird keeps opening links in Firefox. I'm bewildered as to why.
One thought is possibly an old GNOME system setting (there are .gconf and .gnome2 directories in my home directory, though I no longer use GNOME or have it installed on my system). But I don't know and I would have thought the Thunderbird config would have overridden that in any case.

I believe I may have found a bug in Unity. Under the right circumstances an application will jump from the workspace where I left them to my current workspace. This is most noticeable with VirtualBox. I built an Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine so that I could test out new packages before I push them out to the rest of my machines. But the window for the virtual machine constantly appears in my current workspace. It may take a few minutes, or 30 minutes, but it will happen.
I can kind of understand it if a new window appears, but at least with VirtualBox, this happens on a running virtual machine seemingly randomly.

By a fifty fifty chance chromium doesn't open embedded flash elements. Audio works but the embedded flash element shows just black.
Refreshing the page fix this again by %50 chance.
But there's no problem with Firefox because I think it uses the Adobe Flash Player (the one in the repo) but Chromium uses the an built-in flash player.
Is there a way to fix this problem? Or a way to disable Chromium's built-in flash player and use the Adobe's flash player?

On UNE, for example a Firefox Window is opened in workspace 1. I'd like to have a new Firefox window on workspace 2. But when I switch to workspace 2 and hit the Firefox Icon in the left launcher panel, it only brings me back to the running instance of Firefox on the first workspace. So what is an easy way to have a second Firefox Window on the second workspace?

For some reason when I open a file downloaded in Chromium, it opens it in Firefox!
Similarly GNOME Do opens files in Firefox.
Why is that?
How to make it use the proper program?
Where are the associations stored?

I am running fluxbox on Arch Linux. When using chromium, I would like associate .doc(x), .ppt(x), etc. with libreoffice by default. If I try to click on the file once it has downloaded in chromium (on bar at bottom) if i add "libreoffice:" to the end of the list of browsers it works like I would like it to.This is obviously not the best method (I am not even certain why it is trying to open the file from other browsers, xdg-open file is quite intimidating)
