Fighting against Grub2 boot troubles, i've seen on screen that the problems comes when detecting internal SATA devices.
But logs dont help about the scanning boot process, so i search a way to log this verbose process by adding some code into /etc/default/grub or something else.
My laptop's ubuntu partition has been a bit sluggish to boot lately, and I'd like to swap to a verbose boot so I can see if there are any processes I can eliminate to improve speed. E.g. my slackware install was waiting for an 8 second timeout initially, but I was able to stop it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I first started running Jessie 8.1 I noticed that after the disk check the boot was quiet, ie. no messages to the terminal . However, something has happened and now when I boot the machine I get a verbose listing of all the processes being started. Is there a way to change it back to the way it was? In other words a quiet boot. The only thing I know of that has been 'anomalous' behavior is the other day when doing a mp4 to avi conversion, using avconv, I apparently had an over temp condition which closed my LXDE session and brought me to the login prompt. Don't know what other info one may need but feel free to ask for more, if necessary.

Is it possible to save the process and log out then log in and continue the process? I know how to pause a process using kill -pause pID and continue it using kill -cont pID. But that only work if you don't log out after pausing it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu 10.04.1 and a H.P.psc 1311 all-in-one printer scanner.Printer works ok but when trying to scan,with xsane,it goes through the scanning process and an image of the document comes up on the screen.
When I try to save this image to desktop or file/folder whatever I get the message; "Child Process Error. Failed to execute OCR command:GOCR:no such file or directory."
I enabled verbose logging and I am curious how to disable it.

I have Lucid installed on two PCs. The PCs are identical except one uses the on-board Intel G33 video controller while the other has an nvidia 210 video card attached. The nvidia PC restarts/shuts down without showing any console text messages, however the Intel based PC has the following problem. The software on both machines is identical (except for the nvidia packages).
On restart or shutdown on the intel based PC plymouth gives way to a console for 2 or 3 seconds showing the following (none of which are errors as far as i know)...

I can not boot into ubuntu anymore, I have a kernel problem. Is it possible to save the stored data? Maybe with a livecd? I am really tired to solve the kernel problem I will only save my data and then I will install ubuntu again.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with Windows7.My ext3 /home is mounted as F: in windows.I share a firefox profile between them so that when i am in Windows my firefox uses the same profile as it does when in Ubuntu.It all worked great until recently. I am unable to save files by right clicking and save as. In the config i am unable to set a directory to save to. It neer asks me where to save to. Just nothing happens. some off my book marks are all messed up as well, my rss feeds have the same post on some random website every time i log on and i have to manually refresh to get the correct feeds back. I am unable to delete the random bookmark.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04. When I reboot, it stops at a "grub>" prompt. I figured out that I can continue booting by entering these four commants:

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic-pae

I can't figure out, however, how to save these as the default so that the machine can boot without someone present to enter these commands. Running "grub-set-default" tells me "entry not specified." I don't see anywhere in /etc/default/grub that looks relevant.
How do I save my default grub settings?
my mediacenter is attached to an beamer with the optimal resolution of 1280*720 ubuntu 10.04 doesnt offer me this revolution (on my intel 915 graphis controller). this means i have to add this resolution to the possible resolutions. first i used cvt

now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....

I open NVIDIA X Server Settings GUI, change my monitors' brightness from 0.000 to -0.1, go to the "nvidia-settings Configuration" section, click "Save Current Configuration" and click "Quit."
But when I reboot, the brightness is back at 0.000.

I know it is possible to boot Ubuntu Live from a Flash drive. But it just boots up and runs like its a CD. When you shut down the computer, the changes are all lost.
Is there any way to use the flash drive as a Hard Drive? like install Ubuntu on the flash drive and have the flash drive act as a hard drive - so that if I boot with the flash drive in the computer I can boot of of the flash drive and it would act as a hard drive?
Could I just setup Ubuntu and select the flash drive as the install directory? would that accomplish this?
If I change the keyboard shortcut for Open a Terminal in System > Preferences it will not stay in there if i log-out or reboot. When i log back in the shortcut is set to disabled, and I have tried different key combos and they give the same result. I am using Fedora 14 btw and hopefully you guys know of a solution. I tried making a custom command also using the gnome-terminal command but the terminal launches with a different directory other than my home directory when using that method.

during boot-up on my desktop, running openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.3, there are sometimes (not always) some failed services. Most of the time it is postfix and some other service. Today it is just mcelog. So when I switch to the first terminal by strg+alt+F1, I see that mcelog has failed.The system is running anyway, so I wonder if it is safe to turn them off? I would turn off postfix and mcelog. Do I harm the system with that? Would it boot again, after I have turned them off? Or is it recommended to let them stay as they are?As far as I understood, postfix is just a mailserver, which would be used, if I would run a mailserver on my own. But I donīt. I just read mails, via IMAP... But mcelog? Whats that?

Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 10.04 weeks ago and have been running it fine.Now when I start up my computer it gets to the GRUB loading stage (counts down to 0), then the monitor goes blank for a moment and then several thin scratchy lines about an inch wide in total appear across the top of the monitor and it just freezes there.The boot process just stops.I've had these lines appear ever since I upgraded, but they were always momentary and the boot process just continued. Where do I start in diagnosing and fixing this?
