Ubuntu :: Hide Verbose Messages On Restart / Shutdown?

Jul 8, 2010

I have Lucid installed on two PCs. The PCs are identical except one uses the on-board Intel G33 video controller while the other has an nvidia 210 video card attached. The nvidia PC restarts/shuts down without showing any console text messages, however the Intel based PC has the following problem. The software on both machines is identical (except for the nvidia packages).

On restart or shutdown on the intel based PC plymouth gives way to a console for 2 or 3 seconds showing the following (none of which are errors as far as i know)...

Code:
Broadcast Message from root@xyz-desktop
(unknown) at 11:44 ...
The System is going down for restart NOW!
* Deactivating Swap ...
* Unmounting weak filesystems ...

OpenSUSE Network :: When Disable Firewall / Delayed Messages Can Again Be Sent

Sep 14, 2011

I have been running Senmail on SuSE 11.1 for the last few years with no problems.Since installing SuSE 11.3 a few months ago I have been having problems getting Sendmail to send to some (only a few) servers.If I disable the firewall # SuSEFirewall2 stop.I can send successfully using # sendmail -v -q, or # sendmail -v -qIxxxxx.When I re-enable the firewall I will start to get the timeouts/temporarily unavailable messages again (but as mentioned above, only for some servers) even though I can successfully telnet these servers when the firewall is on. When I disable the firewall the delayed messages can again be sent.Has anybody any ideas what I need to change (presumably in the Firewall) to get things working correctly? 'SMTP with sendmail' is already selected under 'Services to Allow' under YaST Firewall->Allowed Services..

General :: Disable Console Messages At Boot Time?

Sep 5, 2011

I am using Arch Linux and want to disable console messages which are displayed when the kernel boots. I have tried the quiet and loglevel=2 options in /boot/grub/menu.1st as given below:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/c6dbfcdc-fcd8-498e-9182-f3bddc4f05ff ro loglevel=2

However I am still seeing console messages at boot. I used grub-install after the changes.

Any ideas where I am going wrong?

Ubuntu :: How To Hide Or Disable Messages During Start-up And Logout In 9.10

Jun 16, 2010

I am building a live USB key using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. No upgrades have been applied. It is as it came in the ISO that was distributed.I would like to create a smooth start-up/logout process where no messages pop up (even briefly) that might confuse someone who is not very tech savvy. I'm referring to the messages that show up right before the login screen during start-up (between usplash and xsplash I think) that say:

"Starting early crypto disks ..."

and also the messages that show up on a black screen right after you initiate logout. It seems to sometimes show system messages including some error messages that can confuse users.Does anyone know of a way to hide, redirect, or disable these messages? I just don't want cryptic messages popping up even briefly that are going to confuse casual users. I'm stuck with version 9.10 since I've made some custom mods and would rather not redo them for a new release.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Jack And "Muse Failed To Find A Jack Audio Server"

Jun 27, 2011

I've got an Acer Aspire 5101 with Natty on it and everything works so far, but I can't start Muse. It says: "Muse failed to find a jack audio server". At the bottom it also says: "...if Jack was started check if it was started as the same user as Muse". This might be the issue. But how can I check this? BTW: Jackd has been installed and I am a Member of the Audio Group.

I am new to Ubuntu and don't know how to fix this. I got this Notebook for free, because my Brother wanted to dispose it as it didn't worked properly after he reinstalled xp. Only the dvd-drive is broken, the rest is in really good condition for such an old thing. After a lot of trial and error I could finally install Natty from USB.

Debian Configuration :: Systemd Boot Is Now Verbose

Aug 13, 2015

When I first started running Jessie 8.1 I noticed that after the disk check the boot was quiet, ie. no messages to the terminal . However, something has happened and now when I boot the machine I get a verbose listing of all the processes being started. Is there a way to change it back to the way it was? In other words a quiet boot. The only thing I know of that has been 'anomalous' behavior is the other day when doing a mp4 to avi conversion, using avconv, I apparently had an over temp condition which closed my LXDE session and brought me to the login prompt. Don't know what other info one may need but feel free to ask for more, if necessary.

Fedora Networking :: How To Debug A Network

Aug 27, 2009

I built my wife a new computer about a month ago, from a barebones kit. It seems to be working fine, except that it will not connect to a known-good internet connection. I can put the cable that is connected to her ethernet port on my computer (also built from a barebones kit) and my computer connects automatically. The network is a cable modem followed by a six port router. Two of the ports, plus the one my wife's computer is on, are in use, but all have been checked, and all work.I thought there might be a hardware problem with the onboard etherneet port that is part of the motherboard, but adding a separate ethernet NIC card did not help; it simply gave me another port that would not connect. I have since removed the second ethernet port.

I am using the default Fedora 10 installation from a DVD I got a few months ago with a magazine. It is exactly the same installation I put on my computer, which works fine. I also put Fedora 10, since upgraded to 11, on the machine in the basement, which also connected okay. The GUI used is Gnome.So the question is, how do I go about debugging what might be wrong? Once I find what's wrong, I will almost certainly need help fixing it, but that is for later.
