Hardware :: Fedora 11 RAID 1 - Disk Failure - Boot From The Single Working Disk?
Oct 16, 2009my Fedora 11 system is not starting anylonger. It stops with the message:

The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).
Fedora :: RAID5 Failure During The Boot Process, And Can't Find The Array?
Mar 31, 2011I am able to retrieve data off a RAID5 array. History: My system disk was partitioned to 10 gigs and over time was filled up to 100% locking me out of the GUI (I am a casual user). Now that I am relegated to the CLI, I need help to see if rebuilding the array and keeping the data intact is possible. I have three sata hard drives in the array and now it appears during the boot process, it fails and can't find the array.
I did the following:
mdadm -D /dev/md0
and here's some of the output:
State: active, FAILED, Not Started
And out of three drives, it states that two have failed. I find this hard to believe as I have had no issues until my system disk was full. A coworker today helped me find some files to delete and now have the system disk down to 97%/8.8 gigs yet I can still not enter the GUI due to the array issue.
Out of the three discs, here are the results (taken also from mdadm -D /dev/md0):

Sorry for providing so little, but I am in (Repair Filesystem) mode and only have local access to the machine meaning all outputs will need to be retyped.
I am able to do anything to the box as its only purpose was media storage and serving.

Mar 18, 2010Ubuntu/Linux operating systems. It installs just fine but after it reboots I get a "disk boot failure, insert system disk". I have searched around but I can't seem to find anything that works. There is only one hard drive in my computer and no other operating systems on it.

Feb 19, 2010I have 2 USB drives. I have had 9.04 running on one for some time. I used Disk Creator in 9.04 to 'create' the drive. I use it as a reference to verify how things went in 9.04 if I hit a problem with 9.10.
However, after some months, when I tried this USB drive it produced this 'Boot Failure'. I followed up by checking the other USB drive which had Lubuntu installed via USB Disk Creator and it produced the same result ie 'Boot Failure'.
The Machine bios is set in the correct order.
I have tried to 're-do' things via 'Disk Creator' in 9.10 and 9.04 with the same result. It is not likely that both USB drives have failed at the same time.
Is Grub2 at fault in some way?
Ubuntu Installation :: Disk Boot Failure After Fresh Install
Oct 16, 2010After buying a new PC, I decided to "reorganize" my former PC as follows:Initially it has been a dual (SATA) disk dual boot PC- one disk for each OS, while XP was fully installed on a single NTFS partition. Using Gparted I shrunk the XP partition, and created some Linux partitions. I've verified that the XP partition (sda1) is bootable. Afterwards, I removed the other (former Linux) disk from the computer. While doing so, I had to temporarily disconnect cables from both drives. Finally, I fresh installed Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.04 derivative), on my pre-prepared Linux partitions. Installation completed flawlessly, and during the install, I've noticed that GRUB2 has been installed on sda. Rebooted and got "Disk boot failure" error.
I've checked the BIOS and noticed that the (single) drive was not recognized.
I manually tested from the BIOS and located the drive as IDE3. Saving the new configuration (F10) and rebooting- the HD gain is not identified (the CMOS battery is fine- keeps time).
Booting a live CD I can see and access all above partitions.

Feb 27, 2010I just bought a brand new hardrive (40gb western digital) IDE, 10 pin.I have gone through the installation and partioned the hardrive, when it gets to 100% it asks me to reboot.So i take the disk out, and then it says DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER:So i press enter and i get the same message> How can i get Ubuntu to boot up?The computer is a 2003 Medion pc with 512mb of RAM And an AMD Athlon processor. The computer has a sticker on that says: Designed for windows xp.

Aug 30, 2010Last night when I turned on my lap top (5 year old Acer TravelMate 4650), it was not able to boot up (10.04 LTS). No system files could be read and a lot of error messages was displayed. In fact, it has done a few checks for disk error lately during boot up, but no further warnings given. I gave up recovering, and simply re-installed Ubntu 10.04. I was wondering if this could be related to a virus attack?

High Point hard disk controller

All the hard drives are hooked to the High Point controller. It recognizes all of them that have power hooked up and read/writes to them. Two have 98SE installs, the third is where I'm trying to install Fedora 12 to get away from some problems I'm having with 98SE.
The BIOS is set up to boot from the "SCSI device" which means it's booting from the High Point controller. The High Point lets me set a boot mark, which, when set to the Fedora drive, yields the disk boot failure no matter what I do to it.

May 5, 2010im looking to boot a PC104+ from a linux floppy...
a) what version should i use that would fit and boot on a floppy?
b) is there any place i can still easily find that version?
c) what is the process (if any) to make the disk bootable (like msdos boot format)
d) can this boot floppy then be installed on a local drive?
i know that seems like a lot but they all kind of go hand in hand from my experience using DOS in such a way. im still out there searching but kudos to anyone who can help.

Jan 7, 2010I bought a t770.uk HP desktop PC, which came without a Hard drive as the pervious owner had removed it for security reasons. A week later I got a hold of a brand new - out of an anti-static sealed bag - compatible Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200 HDD, and installed it as directed by my t770.uk manual. Up until now, things looked to be on a roll. As I don't have any windows OS, I figured Ubunutu would be the way to go (and it certainly is from what I've heard and read about it. I can't wait!).
So I sent off for a CD and it popped through my mail a few weeks back. The problem that I am having is after booting past a very brief view of the HP POST screen, the screen goes black with the error "Disc boot failure-insert system disk and press enter". I've tried placing the Ubuntu disc in (assuming it is asking for that? An OS disc) and restarting, and changing the boot order around, but no matter what I do the error persists and I can't install Ubuntu. I really want to get this PC running with Ubuntu.

When I then try to run the laptop off a LiveCd, the ubuntu splash screen appears with the loading process bar (horizontal line) displayed..however it then appears to display a black screen with no further activity..Now all of this is via an external monitor as my laptop screen shows no activity right from the very start with just a blank screen....so am really stuck here wondering if its a harware/software issue or a combination of both...

Jul 18, 2011I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

Sep 1, 2010I had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error,then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself.Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

Added an SSD (dev/sdc) and decided to move some less often changed directories there. Started with /usr and /boot, leaving / on a primary in the first drive, for now. All started ok, and my changed fstab mounted the right ones, and the system works.
However, grub is actually using the original /boot on / on sda1. I cannot see any way to change this. (Which makes it sorta hard to update the kernel

Okay, since it has two choices, I tried to tell it which one to use. But, grub> root (hd2,5) does nothing.
Disk /dev/sda:
what I seem to recall, grub doesn't care about the boot flag on the disk. Nor does it care about primary vs. logical (except GNU doc says "makeactive" only works on a primary?).
The GNU doc also indicates that it looks for a directory /boot on the partition, so if you're mounting a partition as /boot, it also needs to contain a /boot directory under it. Tried that, but no change.
Is my problem the logical partition? Does that prevent "grub> root" from changing it? I'm afraid to wipe out the old /boot and find that I can't start up.

I keep getting boot errors (when choosing ubuntu from the grub2 menu)

Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot
If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.
My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.
I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).
This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.

Apr 16, 2010Well today I decided that I couldn't wait for the offical release of 10.04 LTS, so I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS Beta 2. After realizing that many problems had come with that update, I decided to just format my Ubuntu partition and reinstall it. Somehow my GRUB stopped working from when I formatted Ubuntu, so I whipped out the old Toshiba recovery disk for Windows Vista 32bit. After many attempts to have the recovery portion of the disk fix all of my problems and seeing no results, I decided that reinstalling Ubuntu (and GRUB) might make everything all better. Well it didn't. Grub shows my Windows partition but fails to boot it. After selecting it, it goes to a blank screen and stops responding. And to add to all of my problems, my BIOS has changed slightly. It no longer shows/or responds to F2 or F12 when I tried to give another try at that Toshiba recovery disk. That kinda sucks since I can't choose what to boot. Please help me!! I really don't want to have to format my entire hard drive and try to install Windows Vista again (Not that Vista is anything anyone should love) I have many expensive programs that can only be activated a certain amount of times. I don't even think that I could reinstall Vista since my BIOS won't let me boot the CD/DVD drive.

I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10. May 13, 2010Today I installed Fedora (I need it for school), but not everything seems to work fine Before installing Fedora on my Macbook I had a triple booting machine: Mac OSX snow leopard, Windows 7 and Ubuntu. (using rEFIt) All of them where working. Since I installed Fedora on the 4th partition I can only boot Mac OSX. Jan 14, 2010I've had problems getting Windows to boot ever since I reinstalled it and then reinstalled the grub boot loader. Normally one would think that I would get a Error * message or something along that line but it starts with a quick flash of some text that says "Starting.." and other stuff I can't read before it disappears. Then it goes to my computers built in diagnostic tool, which obviously won't help since it isn't a real hardware problem either.I ran fdisk and here are some odd things that came up.Quote:

Dec 2, 2010I have a hp g72-b620us laptop.There were three partitions a "HP Tools" a "restore" and "windows" I resized the windows partition in windows 7 with EASEUS Partition Master. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the new partition.Ubuntu boots fine but no windows. When I select Windows 7 it crashes after the animated logo.

Ubuntu :: Recover From A Boot Failure?
Feb 14, 2011Had Ubuntu 10.10 running fine on a Dell box, shut down as normal earlier in the week but now won't boot from GRUB (ends up with Busybox screen and initramfs(?) prompt). PC is a dual boot system which still boots OK into the XP partition on the same hard disk. I've tried all the other Unbuntu boot options in the GRUB menu (older kernels and the 'recovery' / non-recovery options) but all produce the same failure to boot into Ubuntu. I've searched the forums and tried various things but nothing has worked so far.
I tried the fix of booting from an Ubuntu 10.10 live CD, creating a mount point and mounting the relevant linux partition before using #apt-get update and #apt-get upgrade options to repair the installation. This seemed like a logical simple solution BUT the partition will not mount!! Further investigation using the Disk Utility app in the Ubuntu drop down menu indicated an error message along the lines of 'cannot mount Daemon inhibited' which I can't seem to find much information about fixing.
Using Gparted it looks like all the partitions originally set up on the disk are still there.
I put a lot of time into getting the system set up (scanners, printers, webcams and software) and would be really annoyed to have to do it all again if at all possible ...
