If /tmp and /dev/shm partitions are mounted with the noexec flag then this prevents someone from executing something in those partitions.
Example:
You will get permission denied
However if you execute that same script like this:
Then the script gets executed which makes the noexec flag useless.
If there any way to prevent this bug/vulnerability?

if there was a way to change the background pictures for the suse grub? I like the "pretty" grub look with the startup options box for boot parameters, just wondering how to change the background pic. Also, I was wondering if there was a way to change the look of splash, other then verbose quiet showtps? I like the verbose with the picture background, nice touch, just wondering how to get that at default&how to change background, colors.

have a script that will report whenever a file is copied? Some useful information would be the time/date, user, and destination whenever a file is copied. I've looked into the stat command, but it does not distinguish between copy and access.

I am running a opensuse 11.4 with mailx 12.2. I am trying to sent emails via command line using mailx. I have not configured any mail server in yast. My .mailrc in my homefolder looks like this:
set smtp-use-starttls
account gmx {
set smtp=mail.gmx.net:465
set smtp-auth=login
set smtp-auth-user=my.name@gmx.de
set smtp-auth-password=mypassword
set from="My name <my.name@gmx.de>"
}
Unfortunately when I use the command
mailx -s"Test" -A gmx my.name@gmx.de [Return]
Hallo
[ctrl+d]
I am getting only the message
Unexpected EOF on SMTP connection
"/home/myname/dead.letter" 11/338

After running
Code:
nessus-fetch --register <Activation Code>
I got
Code:
nessus-update-plugins could not be found in your $PATH
When I try to run a scan on localhost I get the message "nessusd returned an empty report".
Here's the entry in nessusd.messages
Code:

I would like to get the scan working and make sure that nessus is updating the plugins. I have been looking though the nessus documentation and tried searching on Goggle without any success.

I've been trying to make sense out of this error report. I get it every once in a while on startup of my machine.
Code:
Summary:
SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/ntpd access to a leaked netlink_route_socket
file descriptor.
Detailed Description:
[ntpd has a permissive type (ntpd_t). This access was not denied.]
SELinux denied access requested by the ntpd command. It looks like this is either a leaked descriptor or ntpd output was redirected to a file it is not allowed to access. Leaks usually can be ignored since SELinux is just closing the leak and reporting the error. The application does not use the descriptor, so it will run properly. If this is a redirection, you will not get output in the netlink_route_socket. You should generate a bugzilla on selinux-policy, and it will get routed to the appropriate package. You can safely ignore this avc.
Allowing Access:
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access - see FAQ [URL]

(I'm probably going to have my forum account revoked due to excessive usage ) I'm setting a VPN connection on openSUSE 11.2. Using the networking icon on the tray I add a PPTP connection, set it up but I receive a message 'VPN connection failed'. Googling it up I tried changing a setting called 'refuse-eap' to 'yes' but it doesn't seem to work. Here's the result from the log file:

I am using 11.3 on one machine and 11.2 on the other (a netbook). 11.4 won't install on either and 11.3 on the netbook fails to install as well.
I am using the same setup as I have always used when both systems ran 11.2 (details below) but now I can only mount a drive in one direction. In the other direction the mount command gets stuck with no error message until it eventually times out. I can ping and ssh the machines from each other without difficulty.
Even in the direction in which the mount apparently works (11.2 mounting a drive on the 11.3 machine) when I try to copy files across nothing actually happens.
exportfs -a was run successfully on the exporting machine, and nfsserver is running on both machines as does nfs client.
The exporting machine is 192.168.1.102 (eeelinux) and the other machine is 192.168.1.101 (nina).
Details:
The /etc/exports file on the exporting machine (192.168.1.102) looks like this:
eeelinux:/home/naima # more /etc/exports
# See the exports(5) manpage for a description of the syntax of this file.
# This file contains a list of all directories that are to be exported to
# other computers via NFS (Network File System).

I have local and remote networks that have various printers. I can add any printer (local or remote) to any PC, except for one PC that's refusing to allow remote connection (it used to, but doesn't now!). The problem PC has two printers connected and work OK as a local printer, but both display same problem when attempting to connect from any remote PC via YaST. Using 'Connection Wizard> CUPS Server' connection method requires IP address of remote PC and printer name. But if I correctly select either of the two printers I get an error message:
"PING 192.168.1.149 (192.168.1.149) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.149: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.12 ms
Both printers are set to 'Accept Print Jobs' and 'Share Printers> Allow remote access' permits all networks to connect. why this PC is requiring the root password?

The network manager will ask me for my security key and it will not accept it. Instead when I use the show password feature to see what I typed in was correct, it shows something completely different than what I typed. For instance if my Key was :when it pops up and ask to for me to retype it again it shows something completely different in hex. Is there anyway I can use a different network manager?

I recently install 64-bit OpenSuse 11.3, the first time I'd used Suse 64-bit - I have to say it has been all good so far, which is great. However, today I was experimenting with a tool that tests vulnerabilities which should be remedied if using an NX capable processor. I am running 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop on an Intel Core i7. I downloaded a 64-bit compatible version of paxtest from :
[URL]
Running it I was surprised to see that the NX capabilities of the CPU do not appear to be honored. Here are my results:
PaXtest - Copyright(c) 2003,2004 by Peter Busser <peter@adamantix.org>
Released under the GNU Public Licence version 2 or later
Mode: blackhat
Linux callandor 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-10-25 08:40:12 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Executable anonymous mapping : Killed
Executable bss : Killed
[code]....
From my understanding, NX was one of the big deals a few years back and was a main feature provided by the PAE kernel. I would have thought the default 64-bit kernel would have included NX support. I also thought per NX bit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that NX support has been in the kernel since 2.6.8 I looked in config-2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop but did not see anything related to NX/XD config wise, other than DEBUG_NX_TEST What am I missing here? Shouln't this test fail in the Executable [bss, stack, etc.] tests on 64-bit with a NX capable processor?

I have an nVidia radeon x1300 series running on my suse 64 bit system. The problem is when I try to enable dual head it tells me that I dont have enough virtual memory so when I add the: Virtual 3840 1200 under the screen section it works for a couple of minutes and then bom! it freezes up no mouse no keyboard response and the screen gets all distorted. whats odd is that I can still ssh to the system. The following is my current xorg.conf without the Virtual flag.

I had my BIOS complaing that there were no OS. (worked since releaseday of 11.2).
partition setup:
sda1 : primary : swap
sda2 : primary : ext3 : Kubuntu
sda3 : primary : ext3 : opensuse (flagged as bootable)
sda5 : logical
sda6 : logical
opensuses GRUB is primary and Kubuntus is chainloaded.
The problem occurred after I tried to boot kubuntu for the first time since I installed opensuse. Kubuntu didn't boot. so I probably set up chainloading wrong. No big deal, this I can fix.
The big problem was that after trying to boot Kubuntu no OS was marked as "Boot" in MBR. This is VERY strange. somehow the boot-flag is removed!
After setting the boot-flag (with a live-CD) everything works again. I can reproduce this.
I've tried to find answers but could'nt find any.
Is GRUB supposed to remove the boot-flag when chainloading? have I found a bug?

can mount a cdrom, but not a usb flash dont quite understand how the load methods work involving /mnt/cdrom/"usbutils-0.86tar.gz" eth0 problems and gnome rpm stupidity keeps me from upgrading sys from old version to a newer version, cant even find the cmd to show me that info, sorry. have usb files i want to mount, dont know how to loAD THE CDROM FOLES, SO EVEN THAT ISNT WORKING OUT HAVE DISCS WITH howtos just need to stay focused on steps to get desired end result, while trying to learn too much info for what im currently doing between all the f!@#@ing windows i have open.

I thought I would give Linux a try so I installed Opensuse 11.3.
I used the automatic setup and accepted all default settings on a new HD. At end of installation I clicked Firefox and received a "no server" message.
The only info I found was in KDE Chapt. 17 by Lauri Watts. She says that if I have IP, gateway, submask, and dns numbers, Internet connection is easy but she tells nothing about using the numbers. I have those numbers.
How do I get online?
I have a no-proxy, static service.
Why-oh-why-oh-why would an installation end without an online connection? Or at least easy-to-find instructions to get online?
I had to disconnect the new Linux HD and connect to this old Windows HD to contact you.

I want to load the package madwifi under opensuse from Index of /suse/11.1, but RealPlayer did not function correctly. The reason why I want to use madwifi is that I cannot start my internet with opensuse 11.1 using motherboard from asus with the ethernet adapter from Atheros AR 8121/AR8113 PCI-E Version 1.0.0.5. When I compile the delivered Linux drivers I got the failure message "Makefile:61: Linux kernel source not found". So I decided to take rpm from opensuse within madwifi. How/Where can I get the corrosponding madwifi elsewhere?
