Fedora :: Save A Workspace To Automatically Opens Every Time You Boot?
Jul 10, 2009
Is it possible to save a workspace so that it automatically opens every time you boot Fedora?
I like having Pidgin, Evolution, VLC, and Transmission open in the 4th workspace all the time. Sorry if this has been asked, I searched and found nothing, and this is the first Linux OS I've ever used!

I have a number of applications that I like to have start when I log in. Is there a way to have them automatically open in a specified workspace? For example, I normally keep my e-mail in workspace 2 ('E-mail').

If libreoffice writer is already running in workspace 1 and you open a new document, that document opens in workspace 2. And, interestingly, if you first open writer in workspace 2, it opens new documents into workspace 1.
I tried to recreate the problem with the spreadsheet program and couldn't, it seems to be confined just to the word processor. I don't know if this is a natty problem or a libreoffice problem - I got them both at once with the upgrade.
Also, I don't know if this is the right forum for reporting bugs.

I am trying to run a script that automatically opens Nautilus as root for a certain directory.
# cd /home/abby/Desktop
# gedit go2html.sh
cd /var/www/html
su -c "nautilus ./ &"
# chmod u+x go2html.sh
# ./go2html
The script appears to run but the foreground process closes unexpectedly.

I've got my Lenovo T60 laptop wireless running without too much trouble, the only problem is when i close my laptop lid and open it again the wirelessconnection is down and i simply cant click on the network icon in the notification area to re-connect as wlan0 is inactive. If i go to System>admin>network i cant activate the interface either as the 'active' button is greyed out, the only way to get the thing to come alive again (other than a full reboot) is to toggle the wireless switch on my laptop off and then back on.Not sure this should be required, i've got the interface configured to start automatically but it doesnt seem to care.

Anyone knows how to save the currently workspace settings on my desktop when logout/reboot/shutdown the old setting will resume? Currently, i have configured the multiple xterm sessions and placed them in each corner of workspace on dual monitors, but after the system rebooted the xterm sessions are resumed, but they display on one monitor instead of two monitor and overlapped each other. I followed to save the desktop setting at in the "startup Applications preferencesemember currently runnign application". This would not work as i wish. Littlery, i want each xterm session reopen and place in each corner of workspace

i'm trying to get everything working ok. i have installed ubuntu using wubi and i've found that i can access my files on my windows partition from ubuntu. to do this i have to mount the disk and enter the password each time i boot up, and i would like this to be done automatically. i was wondering if this was possible? i put in a link directly to the music folder on windows into my 'places' but it only appears once i have put the password in. its not a huge thing, but its one of those things which would make starting up my ubuntu a lot more conveniant.

When installing, write down your customizations, including settings and software you add.Lately, I've had to reinstall every couple of months due to crashes. Lots of customizations follow, which are easy to forget, but I usually use the same ones each time, and some settings I leave at their defaults. A list lets me skip the ones I don't change, saving time.Keep the list as text on another machine, in the order in which you carry out your steps, starting with what original software you want handy for a clean install.

I change the audio channels to 6 in alsamixer by choosing my sound card and change the channels to '6ch'. But this setting is not preserved. I see that after a reboot the channels are again going back to 2ch. I have to manually change everytime to 6ch after each reboot. Is there a way to save the setting in alsamixer so that I will get 6ch everytime after reboot? I am not sure I have explained my problem in a way so that you can understand.

I just did a distribution upgrade on my laptop from 9.1 to 10.04, and it went fine for the most part except this issue. After it boots up, I don't see any window titles/scrollbars/borders and on clicking the icon for "Show desktop" on the bottom left, I see the following error message:
"Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager."
After googling a bit, I realized that gnome-wm is not starting automatically and so I have to manually start each time to see the windows working properly. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to make sure that gnome-wm starts automatically? I know I can put it in my .bashrc but I want to do it the correct way if possible. If not, I will have to go with that workaround.

I am going nuts because this should a simple thing and for some reason it's not. 1. I'm just trying to use NTP to set the time automatically. I've done numerous installs and had it work fine. However for my Fedora 11 box and this Fedora 13 box, it's not working. I'm getting a vague error "unable to connect to server." Which could mean anything. As near as I can tell, it should be simple:
a. Select to use NTP.
b. Adjust the local firewall to allow connections at 123 (ntp)
c. If necessary, adjust the router settings for port 123.
I have tried sending port 123 traffic directly to my Fedora 13 machine, but same error. I've tried using other choices of ntp server (like the North America pool). No dice. I've had two separate routers, first a Dlink and now a Cisco. Same problem. I've checked the SELinux logs for errors but didn't notice anything obvious (that doesn't mean much -- I'm not much of an SELinux guru). I've set up Fedora 14 at work and it connected just fine. Didn't have to open anything other than the local port on the Fedora firewall. No network/router adjustments needed.
It's not a giant thing but it's driving me nuts. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Particularly big obvious things that maybe I've overlooked? Does some other setting override this NTP time? Does using this require use of GMT? Something like that?

I believe I may have found a bug in Unity. Under the right circumstances an application will jump from the workspace where I left them to my current workspace. This is most noticeable with VirtualBox. I built an Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine so that I could test out new packages before I push them out to the rest of my machines. But the window for the virtual machine constantly appears in my current workspace. It may take a few minutes, or 30 minutes, but it will happen.
I can kind of understand it if a new window appears, but at least with VirtualBox, this happens on a running virtual machine seemingly randomly.

I've been pulling my teeth out trying to find out a way to automatically save a screenshot to a folder by pressing a hotkey, and append a counter or timestamp to the end of the filename. I found this which works well
import -window root ~/screenshot.png
but I need a way to add a counter so that it doesnt constantly override the same file when I press the hotkey, but will save a new screenshot in the same folder.
I've been looking at bash commands and scripts for the past 3 hours but haven't found it yet, and it seems like it should be an easy task to perform.

If I change the keyboard shortcut for Open a Terminal in System > Preferences it will not stay in there if i log-out or reboot. When i log back in the shortcut is set to disabled, and I have tried different key combos and they give the same result. I am using Fedora 14 btw and hopefully you guys know of a solution. I tried making a custom command also using the gnome-terminal command but the terminal launches with a different directory other than my home directory when using that method.

I have tried using a drawer, but the workspace application is not loaded until the drawer is opened once. Also note I am not running compiz as the computer is a netbook.

I am curious about a particular matter. Recently I have purchased a small plug computer that I will use as a torrent server and networked file storage. The thing is I will attach an external HDD to this linux box. Now I am curious about something. The HDD is powered on while the box works, but once the work is done the disk seems to keep running and does not spin down automatically - even though there is no I/O happening.
My question is whether I should add a script that automatically powers down the HDD after a while of inactivity to save electricity or is it better to keep the disk spinning? How does spinning down a HDD affect its health?
