General :: SSH And Stop Password Being Shown In Clear Text?
Jan 6, 2011I have a headless server running Centos and I often login in remotely to administer it. I have passwordless login and sometimes run commands remotely via ssh from a client machine. I've tried to shut the server remotely but have come across a small problem. Here is the output of the command I use to shutdown :Code:unclec@linux-desktop $ ssh centos 'sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now 'PASSWORD : 123ABCAs passwordless login is set up I do not need to enter a password to ssh BUT as I am running sudo on the server I am asked to enter my centos unclec password and this is shown in clear text on my local machine terminal. Is there a way to prevent this or should I edit the sudoers file on centos so it does not ask me to enter the password when "sudoing" ?

Sep 15, 2010I have a problem with my web browsers showing only text on some web pages. In the Firefox error console, I see the following errors:
1. Error: The stylesheet was not loaded because its MIME type, "text/html", is not "text/css".
2. Bootloader is not defined
3. BigPipe is not defined.
Any browser I use has the same sort of results. If I use WindowsXP, however, everything seems to work fine.

Ubuntu :: Conky Only Showing Text Shading?
Apr 24, 2010I have my conky set up so it displays fortune, then I run a script to add enough spaces so that even if fortune is any amount of lines long, it will take up exactly 17 lines, and after that, it displays the time. The problem I have is that a lot of the time, the fortune will display fine, but the time will only display what default_shade_color is (black).

is there a built-in linux script that does what mine does? and why is conky only drawing the fortune in the right colors? PS the reason I want it all on one conky, is I'm running openbox and the right-click menu only works for stuff drawn to the root screen.
edit: When I don't use the script the colors work just fine, but the spacing's off, obviously. sceenshot-1 shows it.

Jan 27, 2015I just installed a fresh install of Debian Wheezy to an old Pentium 4 desktop computer I found on Craigslist. Everything is mostly up and running but I've been encountering an odd issue with Firefox. Whenever I type text into either a search or text dialog on Youtube, Facebook or on Duck Duck Go the text is invisible. I can highlight the text to see what I have written, but obviously this is quite annoying not to be able to view what I am typing in these places in real-time. The strange thing is that it is only these sites that I have found, everywhere else (reddit, google, Debian forums as well) can see what I am typing. I'm using Firefox 35.0 right now.

General :: Screen Not Showing On Laptop But Showing On Projector When Connected
Apr 18, 2011When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

Feb 3, 2010I've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly

Dec 15, 2010Until this morning, my Wireless had always been working fine. This morning I rebooted after an Ubuntu update and now:
- I am asked twice for "enter password for keyring 'default' to unlock" whereas before I was always just asked once.
- The connection seems to be established, with the icon showing good reception and the tooltip reads "Wireless network connection 'mywifi' active: mywifi (100%)
BUT I can not connect to any website or ping the machines of my network, even by IP address. All of the other computers around (Mac, Windows) can use the Wireless as usual. My Wireless is WPA-PSK TKIP hidden SSID. My Ubuntu is 10.10 Maverick.

Debian Configuration :: Cron Sending Emails With Plain Text Password?
Sep 5, 2011Since we switched our server to Squeeze, I'm receiving emails from the cron about a mysql error (...can't use locks with log tables). But this is not the issue I want to talk about here. The issue is that since the executed command is: /usr/bin/mysqlcheck -uroot -pmypassword --all-databases --check-only-changed --silent which is a command that was automatically added to the cron by the mysql package (I believe), the password is sent in clear text in the email's subject. In my sense, this is a serious security issue (sending root password in email subject...)
I don't know at what level it should be corrected, but it seems to me like it should be corrected in the Debian distrib, shouldn't it ?
And for now, how can I hide the password in the emails I receive ?

And I was about to install the last dependency: ATK (Accessability Toolkit).I opened the Archive Manager to extract the "atk-1.26.0.tar.gz" file (yes, I'm still switching from Windows so I'm fond of GUI), but I noticed all the text in that window was boxes, like the □ type box for every letter of text.So instead I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, because the terminal and regular windows weren't screwed up.I opened a text file in gedit (reference to commands in terminal, such as how to extract files via terminal), but yet again all of the text was □-like boxes.
