View 2 RepliesI am using evolution for my email client, and it shows me hidden files and folders in the folder tree. Basically, my email folder is in a unix folder on a system, and that system logs me into my folder when I try using evolution. The downside is that files like .bashrc, .bash_profile and other weird stuff end up in the foldertree view
See how the tree would show bashrc and .lynxrc? The folder "documents" shouldn't be showing either.Yeah, that's really annoying. It showing the contents of the $HOME folder that I login to.In thunderbird those things wouldn't show.It must be evolution specific.Anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?
just a general weirdness, but some folders that are in my /home folder don't show up. if i check "show hidden folders", they still don't show up. for all terms and purposes, they are simply not there. however, if i search for them through the search tool, or beagle, they show up as being in my /home folder. so, anyone have any idea how this happened, or how i can remedy this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a minor disaster and lost a lot of data. I used PhotoRec to see what it could recover, it saved them to my home directory. 488 folders I cant do anything with as I don't have permission?? I set up root and gave myself admin power but still cant delete them. If I log in as root, where can I find my home folder so I can delete the majority of these folders. Most unfortunately have nothing of value in them.
View 8 Replies View Relatedi have a problem with ps, and pgrep when used in a script. with the -A option it does not print all processes and pgrep on a known running process returns nothing. So I made a script with nothing but "ps -A" and the shebang and it does show all of them. Also, ps -A on the command line is showing all processes. I am running this script as root and it is owned by root.edit: I have ps -A in a function called in a case and if I put ps -A outside the function and case it shows all. how is where it's at changing it's output

View 3 Replies View RelatedActually, Nautilus allows two instances of the same folder, or two folders with the same name in the same directory, as long as one is hidden (with the .prefix) and the other is shown. It happens that, if during a download (through a download manager or a torrent client) the user adds the . prefix to the download folder, another will be automatically created by the application (let's say Transmission for example) and the download would continue to that new folder. If any renaming happens (or if the original folder is restored), the download will resume to the folder with whichever initial name. Eventually, the user will be left with an unusable/corrupt complete download.

View 8 Replies View RelatedIf someone manually partitions their home and root drives and overtime they end up with a lot of dot folders (.burgerspace for example) in their home directory. Is there a quick way to get rid of all the dot folders whose program is no longer installed? For example if I completely removed BurgerSpace in Synaptic, the .burgerspace folder would remain.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently moved to a new machine, and I copied my entire home folder across. This included lots of hidden (starting with '.') folders, and in many cases they are config folders for packages which I have not installed on the new machine. They are taking up space, so I would like to delete them, but to go through manually and figure out which ones I need would be very laborious. Is there a way to find, and perhaps delete, config folders for packages that are not installed?
View 2 Replies View RelatedNautilis is very good at hiding or showing 'hidden' files and folders (names starting with .) but using any other program to save or open a file, I have to scroll through reams of hidden to my storage folders. Is there a way to make the save and open dialogs 'hide' the 'hidden' files? Is it different for different programs?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've set up a ubuntu server at home with the intention of sharing files with windows clients, so I've installed samba. I have no security issues so I've allowed public access to the shares and I can access them fine from all windows machines. I also need to preserve the dos attributes for files and folders using 'map hidden', 'map system', 'map archive' which works great for files but not for folders. I've got a number of folders from my windows box which I would like to keep hidden (for tidiness more than anything) but when I transfer them to the samba share, they become visible again and I can seem to control their visibility at all from windows or from ubuntu. Do I take it from this that samba can only manage to maintain dos flags on files and not on directories?
This is the relevant part of the samba.conf file
Code:
[global]
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
passwd chat = *Entersnews*spassword:* %n
*Retypesnews*spassword:* %n
*passwordsupdatedssuccessfully* .
map hidden = yes .....

using ndiswrapper for a usbwlan device. Configured and modprobe ndiswrapper confirmed working. When I 'iwlist wlan0 scan'I get cell (wifi network) profiles including my own and several of the neighbours - all showing ssid name and whether key managed or not. When I 'wicd-client' this shows my network as hidden. What makes it even stranger is that wicd-client shows all the neighbours network ssid. Check to see if my router is broadcasting ssid and is without a doubt. I have tried to connect to my router via CLI commands (iwconfig) but unable to connect as is wicd-client - will update with log files on this soon.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI like the clock applet in my system tray. It's nice to pull it open and see the time in other locations.
However, because of bandwidth, I'd like for it to stop requesting weather updates.
Is there a way to prevent the weather from being requested while still showing the locations, and timezones on the clock map?
Trying the various settings (and noticing ubuntu gnome users recently had the same exact OPPOSITE problem -- they can't SHOW hidden files in dolphin) to hide my hidden files in dolphin is not working. The settings are saved OK, but those damn (ending in tilde, ie "~") files do NOT ever hide! I even see the correct little green recycling symbol on them, indicating they're identified as such, but no actual hiding goes on..
Nautilus, which I've used before (but have grown tired of, and was looking forward to dolphin), also has a weird issue that seems to have appeared with FC13 (I'd been using FC12 'til now mostly because of this) - there's no way (AFAIK) to tell it to show the location; to see it, you have to click Go->Location each time. Previously I could set it to print out the whole file or server path and it would stay that way when I opened new windows.. This is on fresh install & update.. kernel is 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64.
In Windows's CMD when you execute a command and then start writing the next one (while still executing the former one) the characters remain in the buffer and they all come up nicely to the new line once the previous command has been executed. In Ubuntu when I do this the newly typed characters annoyingly get in the beginning of the previous command's output lines. I don't really understand why isn't the default method as in Windows's CMD. I mean otherwise almost _everything_ sucks with it when compared to Unix/Linux shells/terminals (commands are longer, syntax is annoying, etc.) So I'd like to know how to do this in both Bash and Zsh.

I have just recently installed Fedora 14 Standard Edition. Upon after mounting another parition, I attpempt to find the new partition files in the directory I created for the mount point, but it is not showing. I know the mounted parition is there becuase upon "ls -l /iso", all the files show up.
I had previously tried out Fedora 14, XFE, and this problem did not occur. I also previously installed this same Standard Edition, and this problem did not occur. This is from the exact same download, however, the only difference is I installed Grub into a different partition. But now I am unable to find my new folders in Gnome.
Is it possible to prevent "unable to connect" messages from appearing instead of blocked web-content? I am using a huge hosts file to block unwanted web content from appearing. The attachment illustrates what I am referring to.

This is an extremely weird issue that I can't find any help with on Google. It is minor but extremely annoying.
When I type in a linux command in the terminal, (e.g. "ls -la"), and then press enter, the cursor goes to the next line and just sits there, as if its processing some long command.
If I press enter again, I see the ls output as well as my prompt twice. It's like the terminal window isn't auto-scrolling, but I've also seen this happen when there wasnt even enough text in the console screen to warrant a scrollbar. Has anyone seen this before and know what I need to do? I hope what I'm asking about makes sense.
I'm currently running Testing/Sid on my machine with Fluxbox as my window manager.Yesterday I noticed that I was not getting full output from commands using lxterminal.First off I tried another terminal, which was the xfce4-terminal.The result being exactly the same, missing output.I have also tried re-generating my xorg.conf, and yes you guessed it no change.Getting desperate I also tried dpkg-reconfigure console-setup,still missing output from lxterminal. So to sum up why do I get the full output with xterm but not lxterminal which I have been using previously for some time.
