View 7 RepliesI have a problem with booting from a USB flash drive. I have Acer TimelineX 3820TG. I have Windows 7 Home from Acer and I installed Mandriva OS from USB(from USB because this Acer doen't have a DVD drive). It was OK, but I want reinstall Windows 7 and so I did. Now I have Windows 7 Professional and it wrote over Mandriva's GRUB. It wasn't a big problem. For a while I was just using Windows 7 but now I am thinking that I need some OS with Linux and I am thinking about Ubuntu. But when I tried to boot from USB with Ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor after the BIOS POST.
I was trying many applications to create a bootable USB drive and many versions of Ubuntu (and other Linux distributions), but nothing worked. I tried to Google for answers but I found many problems where all booting goes to black screen but in my problem Windows 7 boots fine from disc but from USB doesn't work.
When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my computers which has an NVIDIA graphics card. The Ubuntu Boot Screen doesn't show up. I know this was a problem in 10.10 but I had found a script to fix it which had worked in that version but when I ran it in 11.04, it didn't do anything.

It didn't show up in the windows boot manager, so I manually went to startup options and changed the default os from windows to ubuntu, trough right clicking My Computer, and going into the "advanced" tab. Now I don't know how to revert back to windows because this does not have a "My Computer". My os is windows XP professional, by the way.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was trying to fix my audio driver so that my speakers would work after installing Linux Mint 8. I rebooted it to see if it worked but the computer won't boot up. It gets past the toshiba screen and the mint logo shows up like normal, but then I get what I think is an error message. I can't be sure though because the screen is not showing a solid picture. If I hit escape, I get another similar screen. If I hit escape again the screen goes blank and I can no longer get it to do anything. I'm new to Linux and not much of a computer wiz.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am an absolute beginner and have been trying to run Ubuntu 11.04 directly from a sandisk cruzerblade 8 gb. I followed instructions on the Ubuntu site and installed the 11.04 iso on the drive using Uiversal USB installer with Persistence.
PROBLEM-When i reboot, the options screen of UBUNTU shows up and when i choose the first option-"RUN UBUNTU FROM USB" dont remember exact wording. but the problem is nothing happens after that and i am back with the same screen no matter how many times i try.
I installed a few services using the dolphin tools menu (configure dolphin) but they're not showing up on right-click, how can I enable them.

My second problem is file search, the feature that comes with nautilus is way too slow, and catfish is lacking so many feature, I'm kind of a sucker for eye-candy, and when I tried beagle it stuck out like a sore thumb! Is there a good looking, well-developed file-search feature for the gnome desktop?
My third question is regarding the update in Lucid, it keeps telling me the following when I run: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

My last issue is with nautilus, I have many large directories with tons of subdirectories (especially my music folders), and nautilus can only view them as icons, list or columns, is there a way to install a script or plugin for nautilus to make it faster and/or include some form of miller columns like in dolphin (I believe it's the best way to view large folders).
Toshiba/Celeron/multibootI just installed Salix KDE. The install went well, afaIk...Salix does not appear on the grub, and I in fact have no way of knowing if it even exists on my machine. I have not checked anything via the console. I do not know how. All other OS's on the HDD are present on the grub, and are unaffected.I am running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS currently.

After selecting suse from GRUB it shows some code (too fast to be read) then black screen forever. I erased the VGA option before booting and now it gets stuck in

My mainboard is a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum. I have 4GB of OCZ memory installed. 2GB just recently installed. In the bios, I've enabled the memory hole remapping for both HW/SW. It is not a shared memory with the onboard video. I have the onboard video disabled. I have a dedicated Nvidia card. The Bios does show a full 4GB in the system information section.
I thought that 10.04, was supposed to have the pae kernel enabled by default. Is that not the case?

Yesterday after seeing OpenSUSE installed on my friends lappy, I decided it IS the time to bid goodbye to Windows. I don't play games, just internet browsing, listening to music, some letter writing and movies of course!
So today I removed Windows XP by formatting C: drive and installed OpenSUSE.
I am happy with OpenSUSE, but I still want to dual boot OpenSUSE with Ubuntu. But in the GRUB,only OpenSUSE entry is shown, Ubuntu is nowhere. It seems OpenSUSE has overwritten the Ubuntu GRUB during install and doesn't include Ubuntu in the boot list as Ubuntu does for other OS when we install Ubuntu.
How to create an entry in the GRUB so that I am able to boot into Ubuntu also.

I recently installed Mint 9 using/trying KDE, which I found very intuitive and feature-rich. However, a snag soon appeared. The screen started to blank every few seconds or minute. This is pretty annoying. I have so far tried every tried-and-tested means available, exhaustively, to no avail. Even their website has this as a known issue, yet the solution (i.e. configuring the screen resolution) doesn't seem to work for me.

View 8 Replies View Relatedit was on instructions from "She-who-must-be-obeyed"'s orders. I had to install XP Pro onto an unused partition of my hd to dual boot with Ubuntu 9.10. It was an uneventful installation as those things go when dealing with a microshaft product, but after massaging out the bugs with XP, there was no option upon restart to boot to anything but XP. The machine just automatically booted to XP.
Now, here's where I feel even more the fool: during the XP install, a screen passed by saying something about changing the accessibility to the Ubuntu partitions, but that it could "easily" be changed somehow once XP was fully installed...I didn't write it down. I know, I know... I'm not worthy of it, but, please, if there's someone out there who knows what's going on with this, please pity this old fool and offer up any advice you may have.
I installed Fedora13. But my Windows is Gone. I followed Next-->Next and completed installation after 1 hour. When i restarted the system, isaw blue screen something called grub and windows is not listed. I had important data in it where did it go?
View 14 Replies View Relatedi got this new computer with Windows 7 on it and promptly installed Ubuntu 10.10. it didn't recognize my graphics card or screen, and i was too lazy to figure it out. (xorg.conf was missing?) anyway, I went back to windows and deleted the partition that linux was on. When i reboot the computer, all it shows is "grub rescue>" and a command line. as you can probably tell by my writing, i am a teenager who lives under my parents' roof and they bought me this computer, and now it doesn't work...so i used my backup disk and i reinstalled windows back to factory settings, and it still shows up with a grub command line. so does this mean that my win os is misplaced or something.. I don't know if this matters, but i have a Gateway with Intel Pentium dual-core processor.
