Oct 17, 2010i install ubuntu though wubi and it worked kind of. It asked me to restart at the end so i did and when it was startaing up it didnt show the option to boot into ubuntu.

Jun 26, 2010First: I have just recently upgraded to 10.04 and I just noticed that my network icon in the top right tool bar disappeared. The one that monitors your wireless signal for laptops. How do I make that appear again?
Second question: How do I change the time selection at the beginning when I first turn on my laptop to choose between Windows or Ubuntu? Better yet, is it possible to make it infinite?

Jun 18, 2010How can I change the behavior of the selection buffer or a program that uses it ( I have xclip) to not send me text until the mouse button is released while clicking and dragging? This causes havok in the software I'm developing that tries to make use of the selection buffer. I need the full selection, not bits more bits more bits and then the full selection.EDIT: I cannot listen for mouse events such as button release outside of the GUI of my program.

Ubuntu :: PC Reboots On OS Selection At Boot?
Dec 1, 2010Everything was going great earlier today when suddenly, my PC on a fresh boot, gave me a message that said something like "Ubuntu is running on low graphics mode ..". It was running a low res, i think it was 640x480, and gave me some repair options like a. Boot in low res mode for just one session b. Trouble shoot this error etc..There were 3 more options but i don't remember what they were.
i chose "boot in low res just for this one session", but it gave me the same error the next boot. Then i tried troubleshooting, which didn't work (restoring to a backup config was no use). Then finally i rebooted and started Ubuntu in Recovery mode, and i did something like "Fix broken packages" because , from the list of options it seemed like the only one which would help at that time.
But now, whenever i choose the Ubuntu option after starting my PC, it just restarts my computer. My other OS is Windows 7 which boots just fine. Hope someone can help me with this . In the meanwhile i'll try making a new MBR or something.
Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Selection Has Been Changed To CD Rom
Sep 11, 2010I have been trying for a couple days now to install 10.04 on a 250G hard drive that was a USB boot with 9.1. I want the hard drive in the case. The bios has been changed and does see the new drive. Boot selection has been changed to CD Rom. Everything starts out fine until step 4 of the install, Prepare partitions. There is no hard drive available on this step. The HDD is not seen by the disk utility either.

Jun 20, 2010I have a Ubuntu - windows 7 dual boot (in two partitions of the same HDD) desktop PC for a few months. I was learning terminal commands and, although I don't think I made such a big mistake, but the fact is that the a very strange thing happenned: "Preferences" and "Administration" from System disappeared as it did also "Applications". After rebooting the same it remained the same. No big deal, I thought, because I haven't yet saved any important work on Ubuntu. So I reinstalled Ubuntu. Done that everything was nice until I booted Windows... Since then I counldn't start windows after GRUB due to:

Windows Live DVD Repair is useless. I've tried CHKDSK utilities, no result. Windows partition in Ubuntu's Disk Utility is OK but I can't access the files (all "broken links"), just can explore a few directories after which I find myself entering the same folder endlessly. I wanted to repair windows boot or at least recover some important files in Documents and I thought I had backup (but turns out that, for some reason that I'm still trying to understand, they aren't...).

Jul 31, 2011I locked the screen, came back, typed the password, screen remained black, though cursor was visible and moving. Nothing I could do to rejuvenate the screen. Had to switch to tty6, sudo shutdown -r now. Then, on reboot obtained kernel selection, it proceeded to displaying kernel messages, but froze on sdb, after 3 secs. I figured it was the usb, so turned off, removed usb cables to external hard drives, but again it froze saying something about firewire mouse, the mouse is also usb. I tried several times, but no matter what kernel I chose, I couldn't get it to boot. So I loaded puppy live cd, but now it can't access some parts of the disk. I was running utorrent and the folder with partially downloaded files can be accessed but there's nothing there (there was), and some folders can't be accessed at all.

Feb 11, 2010I have several RHEL 5.0 servers in a secure network. We have identified around 200 rpms from 5.4 that we would like to upgrade. These servers have no connection to the internet, and very limited connection to the corporate network.
The application guys will not approve a full 5.4 upgrade as the app is reliant on certain rpms from 5.0.
So how can I create a boot disk that will install just the selected 200 rpm's. I have been trying to modify (remove rpms) from the downloaded 5.4 dvd, but with no luck. I have also had a look at anaconda, but seem to be going round in circles.

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot With Wubi?
Jan 7, 2010We have a computer lab at school that ITS is trying to get ready before the semester starts. ITS is willing to put a wubi install on all the windows 7 machines in the lab after some faculty asked for a linux option. However they don't really support linux and basically need our help if any problems arise. After getting one machine to boot up nicely they used symantec ghost to make an image and put it on all the machines (I don't know the details on this but this is what I gather). However, no machine will boot into Ubuntu 9.10 unless one edits the boot options upon choosing Ubuntu from the windows 7 bootloader. I suspect there is a subtle problem that lies from ghosting the one machine.

Ubuntu :: Could Not Boot Into Wubi
May 16, 2011Alright, I've had Wubi running on my Windows 7 PC for a few months now and it's great. I had given Wubi 5GB of space when I installed. After using it for some time, I decided I wanted some more space for my Wubi install. I looked up how to do it and came across a few options. The one I chose is this one: "Download wubi-add-virtual-disk, open a terminal and run: Code: sudo sh wubi-add-virtual-disk /home 15000
Where the first argument is the directory to move to a new dedicated disk, and the second argument is the size in MB. You should now reboot. If you are happy with the result, you can now remove /home.backup. To undo the changes remove /home, copy rename /home.backup to /home and remove the /home line in /etc/fstab."
The only problem - after I rebooted, I could not boot into Wubi. It has an error when I try, but it goes away too quickly for me to read, then it just restarts my computer. How can I fix this without having to reinstall Wubi completely? I'm willing to reinstall if it's the absolute only option, but I'm willing to try anything to get it working again. Oh, and I found another way to change the space, so no worries about that. I just have to get back into Wubi to do it...

Nov 27, 2010I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.

Jul 27, 2010I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with Windows XP, installed from the live CD via WUBI. I believe that GRUB is 1.97~.
Everyting was working just fine until after applying some of the upgrades in the upgrade manager; now Ubuntu will not boot. Instead, it starts up the GRUB console with an error message saying that it can't find the kernel.
If you type ls, you see the following:

(loop0) is the Ubuntu loopback drive, (hd0,1) is the Windows drive (the real hard drive) and they are intact. I am able to set the root to (loop0) and you can see the files. But the hard drive and the loopback drive do not appear in /dev, so you can't mount them. To be precise, there are no devices beginning with "sd" listed in /dev.
I am able to boot the computer from the live CD, which automatically mounts the hard drive; from the live CD, I can mount the loopback drive thus.

So they are not broken.
How can I make the drives appear in /dev when booting from GRUB?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot With CD Or Wubi
Sep 1, 2010I have recently discovered ubuntu and like it's elegance and simplicity and want to learn more about it "hands on". To this end I have tried to put it on one of my PC's running the Vista SP2 OS...When i try to install it with the CD the drive spins up then starts "hunting"..next the PC shuts down..black screen monitor.no KB or Mouse..the monitor flashes a box saying "power saving mode" then all is dead except for the power button being lit..I have to manually turn the PC off to recover...Next i did a D/L of wubi and rebooted as advised.Selected ubuntu on the BIOS and had the same final result as B4 with the CD. I have D/L and burned 2 CD's, one with my XP machine and the other with the Vista machine..Both CD's work as advertised on my XP machine (i did the "live" install) but not the Vista. The Vista machine is an HP with: AMD Athlon 64x2 3800+ CPU..3 GB of RAM..250 GB HDD. I do not like Vista ( i inherited the machine) it's a pain in the posterior. IMHO ubuntu and it's ilk are the way to go and i intend to do just that one way or the other.

Dec 5, 2010I have been running Ubuntu (Wubi) for about 2 - 3 months now and it has been flawless.
I start up the computer. I get the choice to book windows 7 or Ubuntu I choose Ubuntu and then I get the list of boot installers to choose from and it is play time.
Today when I went to get onto my Ubuntu install, I got the first window asking if I want Windows or Ubuntu and when I chose Ubuntu, rather than going to the Grub boot menu, the laptop would just restart and go back to the first window asking if I wanted windows 7 or Ubuntu.
It seems the Grub boot files are gone. Now I have read that the fix for this is to use a live disk of Ubuntu to reinstall Grub2 BUT it is my impression the Wubi does not install Ubuntu "normally"
Can I rescue Grub using a live disk as if ubuntu was installed directly yo a partition from a regular ISO or is there another way to do it if it was installed by Wubi?

May 23, 2011I'm a bit of an Ubuntu virgin. Well, I've had a dabble in Ubuntu before and it was enjoyable, though I panicked when I accidently deleted the bootloader for Windows so I decided to get rid of Ubuntu. Which comes to my next point. [EDIT] When I deleted the bootloader, I used a Windows 7 Recovery CD which got me back on to the OS - which I think messed up the Ubuntu part of the bootloader [/EDIT] I've currently tried to install Wubi 5 times now - I've created a dedicated partition of 20gb for it as well. Now it downloads Ubuntu and installs it correctly (from what I can see) but when I come to select Ubuntu on start up (the option IS there).. I get a this black screen:

I uninstalled through Windows and reinstalled Xubuntu 9.10 with Wubi with no apparent problems.When I look in C:ubuntudisks, root.disk, swap.disk, and the boot folder are both present. The C:ubuntudisksootgrub folder is empty; I don't know whether or not it should be that way.But when my computer starts, it just boots Windows Vista without displaying the menu asking me to select my OS.

Ubuntu :: Creating Dual Boot On 2nd Hdd No Wubi?
Jul 27, 2011I just reinstalled Ubuntu from the LiveCD onto my second HDD because that was my intent originally, and I very much disliked having to choose my OS a second time before finally booting into Ubuntu.
Is there any way for me to turn these separate installations (Win7 on my first HDD, Ubuntu on my second HDD) into a nice dual boot system without reinstalling Ubuntu or am I going to have to reinstall Ubuntu?
If I do have to reinstall Ubuntu, do I tell the partition manager to load the boot loaders from Ubuntu onto the Windows drive, or do I tell it to load them onto the 100MB windows system partition? I currently just put the entire installation onto my second HDD, and then lost my dual boot option. Now I have to switch first boot device in BIOS to switch between operating systems.
General :: Can't Boot Into Ubuntu After Installing Wubi
May 10, 2011I had Maverick installed and it was running nicely. I decided to upgrade to Natty Narwhal using the update manager. After doing that, Natty Narwhal wouldn't boot. I don't remember what the errors were. I decided to uninstall the wubi installation of Natty Narwhal and start over again. When I tried to install Natty Narwhal, I got the option to boot into Ubuntu, but when I did, I got the following errors:
Try (hd 0,0):NTFS5:no wubildr
Try (hd 0,1):NTFS5:no wubildr
Try (hd 0,2):NTFS5:no wubildr
Try (hd 0,3):invalid or null
Cannot Find GRLDR
Then it goes back to the boot screen. I'm trying to install with wubi on Windows 7. The upgrade must have messed something up, but you'd think it would be wiped out after uninstalling. Oh, yeah, I tried to install Linux Mint with mint4win and got similar errors. Anything I can do about this?
Ubuntu :: Not Showing Up For Boot On Dual Boot System With XP Pro?
Sep 13, 2010it was on instructions from "She-who-must-be-obeyed"'s orders. I had to install XP Pro onto an unused partition of my hd to dual boot with Ubuntu 9.10. It was an uneventful installation as those things go when dealing with a microshaft product, but after massaging out the bugs with XP, there was no option upon restart to boot to anything but XP. The machine just automatically booted to XP.
Now, here's where I feel even more the fool: during the XP install, a screen passed by saying something about changing the accessibility to the Ubuntu partitions, but that it could "easily" be changed somehow once XP was fully installed...I didn't write it down. I know, I know... I'm not worthy of it, but, please, if there's someone out there who knows what's going on with this, please pity this old fool and offer up any advice you may have.

Jan 14, 2010I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 approx 1 week ago and it's been fine. Last night, Ubuntu froze while I was running several programs. I wasn't sure how to pull up any type of 'task manager' and the mouse didn't move so after several minutes I was forced to hard reboot the computer. Grub starts and allows me to select Ubuntu but won't get past the log-in screen (allows me to log-in but freezes immediately after hitting enter). I started the recovery mode and the errors show what I believe to be sector errors (?)Do I need to run a 'chkdsk' from Windows or re-install Ubuntu? If deleting/un-installing Ubuntu (through Wubi) is necessary, is this a problem directly related to Wubi (i.e. is a clean install on a seperate partition better than installing through Wubi)?
