Ubuntu :: No Boot Up - Screen Not Showing Solid Picture

Mar 17, 2010

I was trying to fix my audio driver so that my speakers would work after installing Linux Mint 8. I rebooted it to see if it worked but the computer won't boot up. It gets past the toshiba screen and the mint logo shows up like normal, but then I get what I think is an error message. I can't be sure though because the screen is not showing a solid picture. If I hit escape, I get another similar screen. If I hit escape again the screen goes blank and I can no longer get it to do anything. I'm new to Linux and not much of a computer wiz.

Ubuntu :: No Boot After Update \ Goes To A Black Screen With A Solid White Line In The Top Left Corner?

Mar 3, 2011

Today brought some new updates. I did the updates and while not required I did a restart. Then it goes to a black screen with a solid white line in the top left corner (flashing). It does not boot. I held down the power button to shutdown. When I press the power button, I get the Dell splash screen, then it goes to a black screen with a solid white line in the top left corner (flashing). Nothing like this has happened before

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Black Screen - No Sound - Solid HDD Light

Jun 29, 2011

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 last night, it worked fine, installed my graphics drivers, worked fine, and then I ran "sudo apt-get update" and then "sudo apt-get upgrade". There was about 240MB of packages to be downloaded, and since I was going to be on for a while, I did. I didn't restart after it finished, I just turned off my computer and went to bed.

Well now, when I turn on my computer and boot to Ubuntu, after the boot screen, my monitors stay on, but show a blank screen. There is no boot up sound, the HDD light is solid on, and I can't access terminal through Alt + Ctrl + F1.

Now I don't know how to revert back to windows because this does not have a "My Computer". My os is windows XP professional, by the way.

General :: Can't Boot OS From USB Drive / Showing Black Screen With Blinking Cursor

Mar 8, 2011

I have a problem with booting from a USB flash drive. I have Acer TimelineX 3820TG. I have Windows 7 Home from Acer and I installed Mandriva OS from USB(from USB because this Acer doen't have a DVD drive). It was OK, but I want reinstall Windows 7 and so I did. Now I have Windows 7 Professional and it wrote over Mandriva's GRUB. It wasn't a big problem. For a while I was just using Windows 7 but now I am thinking that I need some OS with Linux and I am thinking about Ubuntu. But when I tried to boot from USB with Ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor after the BIOS POST.

I was trying many applications to create a bootable USB drive and many versions of Ubuntu (and other Linux distributions), but nothing worked. I tried to Google for answers but I found many problems where all booting goes to black screen but in my problem Windows 7 boots fine from disc but from USB doesn't work.

General :: Screen Not Showing On Laptop But Showing On Projector When Connected

Apr 18, 2011

When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.

If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.

I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

Here is the output of xrandr when the laptop is connected:

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Change The Name Of The Login Screen Picture?

Oct 26, 2010

Today I decided to customise my Ubuntu by installing my own picture over the default picture used in the log-in screen. I did a search and found it (in /usr/share/backgrounds). I looked into it a bit and found that the image was a .jpg with the name changed to a .png extension. I though I copied the title of it but must have hit the wrong button.

I put my picture in the folder. I then copied the name of the file, then deleted it. I went to paste the name over my new picture, and then found that I had hit the wrong button to copy it. When I delete things I usually hold shift to perma-delete it, so it isn't in the bin. Oh btw, I did this before in 10.04 and it worked in case anyone wants to do the same. It just needs to be a .jpg file, renamed to end with .png

Jul 3, 2010

The laptop is a samsung X30 and i spent days trying to install ubuntu 10.04 unsuccesfully as there was no clear picture on the screen, just a black and purple splodge. I then saw a post on these forums discussing the default resolution of ubuntu and how it is incompatible with some machines so via VGA cable i connected it to my TV and sure enough i could see what was going on and finished the installation process. I assumed that once ubuntu was fully installed i would be able to change the resolution using the monitor preferences but none of them worked. I am now faced with the problem that unless plugged into the TV i have no picture on my laptop, does anyone know why my laptop screen wont work with ubuntu and how

Ubuntu :: Not Showing Up For Boot On Dual Boot System With XP Pro?

Sep 13, 2010

it was on instructions from "She-who-must-be-obeyed"'s orders. I had to install XP Pro onto an unused partition of my hd to dual boot with Ubuntu 9.10. It was an uneventful installation as those things go when dealing with a microshaft product, but after massaging out the bugs with XP, there was no option upon restart to boot to anything but XP. The machine just automatically booted to XP.

Now, here's where I feel even more the fool: during the XP install, a screen passed by saying something about changing the accessibility to the Ubuntu partitions, but that it could "easily" be changed somehow once XP was fully installed...I didn't write it down. I know, I know... I'm not worthy of it, but, please, if there's someone out there who knows what's going on with this, please pity this old fool and offer up any advice you may have.
