Ubuntu :: Prevent Display Of Mounted Home Folder On Desktop ?

Feb 9, 2010

I recently changed linux distros and switched to Karmic. In my earlier setup /home was on a separate partition.

After switching to karmic I added the following line to /etc/fstab to mount my /home partition which was on /dev/sda6 (ubuntu is on /dev/sda7) /dev/sda6 /home ext3 nodev, nosuid 0 2

After rebooting I saw that while earlier I had an empty desktop now my desktop shows the content of my home folder.

On googling I found out about how I could change the nautilus preferences.

I used gconf-editor to change: apps>nautlius>preferences>desktop_is_home_dir to false

I also changed: apps>nautlius>desktop>volumes_visible to false.

However on rebooting I still see all the contents of my home folder on the desktop.

What do I need to do to show the Desktop as blank (as in point to ~/Desktop rather than point to ~)?

Ubuntu :: How To Permanently Decrypt Home Folder

May 23, 2011

I chose the option to encrypt my home folder during installation, but I don't want it encrypted anymore since that makes it impossible to access any files in my home folder unless I'm logged in as that user.

I'm really hoping to avoid reinstalling from scratch just to fix this. Anyone know how to do it?

BTW, it's Ubuntu Server 11.04 32-bit.

Ubuntu :: Can't Permanently Mount A Windows Share Folder?

Jan 7, 2011

I'm successfully accessed a local Windows Share folder with the "Places --> Connect to Server" tool, but I can't figure out how to get it permanently mounted so that I don't have to keep logging in every time I boot up. I understand that the solution is supposed to involve adding a line to fstab, but I've tried a dozen variations on it based on various tutorials I've found online to no avail. Is there any way to check and see how the "Connect to Server" tool is doing its magic? Or to make that permanent?

Debian Multimedia :: Permanently Remove Gtk-3.0 Folder In Wheezy?

Sep 1, 2011

There is a folder in my home titled 'gtk-3.0,' which continues to reappear even after I have deleted it. The reappearance of the folder seems to occur after using lxappearance to change the themes. I will not be participating in the headaches of the switch from gtk2 to gtk3, just as I did not participate in the headaches of the switch from KDE 3 to 4. So the following are my questions;1. Is it possible to permanently delete the gtk-3.0 folder so that it can not ever reappear in my home? (And why is it appearing there anyway? Shouldn't it be hidden with a dot?)2. If I can not prevent this folder from appearing in my home, is there a setting I can use in Wheezy to block gtk3 libs and apps from installation? Presently, the only gtk3 lib or app shown by aptitude search is libcanberra-gtk3-0, but I can't remove it due to notification-daemon dependencies.3. If I switch from all gtk2 apps to all KDE apps will that solve the problem of gtk3 placing a completely unnecessary folder in my home?

Ubuntu :: Shell Permanently Integrated On The Desktop?

Jun 4, 2010

permanently open BASH Shell open, on the side of the GUI. This would mean re-sizing the GUI... You would basically have a divider between the shell, and the GUI, so that you could resize either, depending on which you were working with more. For some programs, which open a new shell (aeroscript for example), that stays open behind the GUI, or has an ASCII "GUI", the program would simply open in a tab of the shell. The main shell would be dynamic; meaning that whenever you selected a new window in your GUI, the shell would automatically cd to that directory, in order to save some time. This would be especially useful when editing many files at once with a text editor such as Nano or VI. Alternatively, there could be a different shell tab open for each session of the file explorer. This however, could get quite cluttered. It's still a pretty raw idea. I did some Googling, and so far haven't come up with any similar ideas or actualities." This should also have options as to which shell you would like to install with it (BASH, KSH, ZSH, etc.)

Ubuntu :: Don't Have A Desktop Anymore - Boot Into A Full-featured Desktop?

May 2, 2011

I guess I messed around with Unity on Ubuntu 11 a bit too much without knowing too much about it. Here's what's been happening: I chose the 'cube' setting in CCSM, but after switching to it, Unity crashed. So I rebooted and X11 started, but no Unity. Which means no window borders or anything.

how I could set it up again? I disabled the login-screen, as I'm the only user, so I guess I have no chance to simply choose Gnome for example to boot into a full-featured desktop.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Keeps Crashing When Renaming Folder Under Folder View Plasmoid?

Jun 17, 2011

Running kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ xrender and folder-view plasmoid:

I cannot view "open with" for directories on the desktop (but it is visible w/in dolphin file structure) and whenever I try to rename folders on the desktop it crashes and restarts (but the rename is successful and no open windows crash).

This glitch is reproducible under OpenGL and Xrender; had to switch over to xrender after a recent system update that seems to slow my computer to a crawl after a little time and kept it cause it seems much smoother and crisper.

Is there any way to fix these issues or is there an alternative to the folder-view plasmoid to view a folder content on the desktop that is more stable?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sony FP - No Display But Desktop Accessible Via Remote Desktop?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything. However nothing on the TV itself. How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

Ubuntu :: Add A Folder To A Hard Disk Which Was Full Of Symlinks To A CD Drive

Jun 22, 2011

if there was a way, to add a folder to a hard disk which was full of symlinks to a CD drive. This would primarily be a way to store offline media and a way to access it. I would still be able to browse the folder structure and see the files (but possibly not the sizes). I imagine something like this:

/archive/cd/cd1/photos/me.jpg > /mnt/cdrom/cd1/photos/me.jpg

Therefore I can see what files I have available, and I know which media to insert (in this case cd1) and I would then be able to view the files? Or if anyone has a better idea I'm open to it. Just to mention I don't have a GUI on this server, it is completely headless so any solution needs to be console based
