when i am booting my ubuntu 10.04 i boots into tty1. then i have to start gdm manually Sudo etc/init.d/gdm start. and then it works fine. how do i make my 64bit desktop edition boot into gdm automatically and permanently?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI downloaded and installed the Ubuntu desktop edition and when I boot up I have the options to boot either Windows 7, or Ubuntu (so far so good), however, when I select Ubuntu I get a message saying that the following file is corrupt:
File: ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr

Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
Any thoughts on this? Would just re-installing it fix the problem?

I am running a dual-boot with Ubuntu (10.10) and Windows 7. Recently I edited my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file to only show one version of Ubuntu (as opposed to several kernel versions) and Windows, simply by commenting out all other menu entries. My question is if I can edit GRUB to just boot a specific entry automatically.
I tried removing all other menu entries, but GRUB still showed the menu with only one entry. I've also considered just setting the timeout to either 0 or 1 second, as this would basically achieve the same thing.
How to make Windows Boot Manager automatically open GNU GRUB and then with GNU GRUB automatically boot Linux Ubuntu 11.04.

I have checked Yast2's runlevel services option and dansguardian is enabled to 'Yes'. But when i check with 'service dansguardian status' it reports 'unused'.If i start dansguardian by hand, things work perfectly fine.I am in a desperate situation since there are 4 other computers which are dependent on this setup to work correctly
View 2 Replies View RelatedIf a file gets created in the user's Desktop folder, or if a drive is added to the machine and a Desktop icon is correspondingly created, they will by default appear on the left side of the desktop (unless, in the case of the latter, the specific drive has been created before and dragged to the right side, in which case GNOME will remember to put it in the same place).
Because I have a terminal window embedded onto my Desktop in the top left corner and occupying most of the screen), I keep my icons on the right side of the Desktop instead of the left (Mac style) - Any time I add a new drive or a file is sent to the Desktop, however, I have to kill the terminal window to be able to click on the icon, then drag it back to the right side, then restart the terminal.
Is there any way to tweak GNOME so that these icons are added from the top right corner and down instead of from the top left, automatically?
I have Windows 7 and Fedora 14 both on my laptop in dual boot configuration. When my computer starts up it shows a screen that says press any button to select another operating system to start, then I can make Windows 7 start. But after 2 seconds, if I DON'T press any button then Fedora starts automatically. How can I change this so Windows starts automatically when I don't press any button?

Hey everyone I'm pretty new to ubuntu/linux so please bear with me . I recently installed 10.10 on my new htpc. The initial install went great, until I went to install the updated driver for my graphics card. What I did was I downloaded the driver off of nvidia. Then I did these steps:
1. ctrl-alt-f1
2. logged in
3. sudo services gdm stop
4. I then located the driver package that I downloaded and ran it, it seemed to install fine (except for an error about some install script? but it let me proceed)
5. sudo services gdm start
It went to the gdm/ubuntu desktop. However I then connected it via HDMI, and the resolution was way off (top bar was not even displayed on TV) and I tried many different settings but no luck in fixing it. Next after restarting it did not automatically boot to the gdm/desktop. Instead it stayed at the command line login (the ctrl-alt-f1 screen).
tl;dr : 1. How to make it automatically boot to the gdm/desktop after I updated my gpu driver
2. How to fix the resolution for HDMI from my gpu to my TV. (DVI works fine
Above adapter can be installed on v10.2 and 11.3 using ndiswrapper:-
1. Copy the 3 driver files from Windows:- like netwpn111.inf, WPN111.sys & ar5523.bin.
(Be carfeul about the exact names, because they have changed over time).
2. sudo ndiswrapper -i netwpn111.inf
3. sudo ndiswrapper -m
4. sudo modprobe ndiswrapper (the adapter should light up at this point and networks will be detected shortly after - see network manager). (Be careful of paths here - e.g. I had to use /sbin/modprobe - so 'whereis' may be necessary to find these commands).
2nd When I reboot, I need to run the modprobe command again. How do I make the module load automatically on boot? Also (and this is minor), can I bypass the KWallet, keyring thing? it seems silly to enter a password for the keyring and then click another password dialog, when I can just as easily enter the password for the network itself.
In order to get my PIC programmer to work through Piklab, I have to change the ownership of the /bus folder to myself;sudo chown MYUSERNAME -R /dev/bus.The ownership of the folder then reverts back to root after some time.Is there anyway to make it PERMANENTLY under MYUSERNAME ownership?

Anyone successfully installed AIR and iPlayer on F11?
I've switched to 32 bit Adobe flash, tried Autoten for AIR and Dangermouse's advice for iPlayer: url.html but it's not working, and trying to install AIR from url results in an endless busy downloading graphic .
I assume my problem is a lack of required packages, though I searched the repositories using YUM extender for the packages listed here: url.html and can't see them either as installed or available.

I always resume the compositing every restart.Also, I can't find all the effects in kwin. But most of them do not get deleted out of the Trash. I have had the same address since about 1997 and there are certain spams I know I will get every day no matter what and I would like them gone for good.
