Ubuntu :: Turn The Desktop Effects Permanently On?

Aug 7, 2010

I'm using Kwin desktop effects. I turn on some desktop effects and it worksbut after I reboot my PC, the desktop effects does not turn on automatically.I always need to turn it on again. I always resume the compositing every restart. Also, I can't find all the effects in kwin. I can only adjust the basic effects (the first tab) but when I tried to go to the all effects tab (the second tab) it is empty.

Software :: Desktop Effects Wont Turn Off?

Feb 16, 2010

I made the mistake of turning desktop effects on which slows down my computer. Now the problem is i cant turn it off.

I deselect "enable desktop effects," absolutely nothing happens as a result.

I tried tricking it by checking enable again than when it offers that 10 seconds to keep the settings, chosing not to, and desktop effects shut off finally but within 2-5 seconds reactivate.

It's as if posessed. Howcome it is unresponsive to turning off??? and turns on by itself??

OpenSUSE :: KDE 4.5 Desktop Effects - Turn Off The Jerky Dimming Effect

Jun 11, 2011

Just installed openSUSE 11.4 which comes with KDE 4.5. It has taken a while for me to find my way around and I am still trying to change settings so that VLC is default multimedia app rather than Amarok or similar. how to turn off the jerky dimming effect which was being applied when I close a window. Out of interest does anybody know what memory and cpu overhead these effect costs and how many lines of code? More to the point does anybody know who needs them?

When using Dolphin with column view does anybody know how to have the left margin shown rather than the right. As it is now, with long files names, the right hand end of the filename is shown and to see the directories I have to use a slider to scroll back to the left. I do not recall this being the case before. It used to be that the long file name was cut off unless one scrolled. In that way you could see all the directories and when moving files life was simple. Now this is not the case and actions take longer.

I was hoping someone could tell me how to turn off the basic windows effects in compiz but keep it turned on so I can use something like Docky.

The reason is because nautilus takes a few painful seconds to open up with the effects turned on and some times I end up clicking a folder etc a second time thinking it hasn't opened.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Turn On Visual Effects After Performing Update / Enable It?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm running Karmic on an Acer Aspire AO751h and very aware of the issues regarding the GMA500 ans psb drivers, and after reading all the forums I've finally accomplished to make it work just fine. Last week it performed an update via the update manager and since then I haven't been able to restore/run any of the compiz settings and found out that the problem is that it doesn't let me turn on my visual effects under the appearance settings. When I attempt to set them as normal or extra, it starts "searching for available drivers" then the screen blinks several times, goes black, hides every window and just shows me my desktop background and then come back again and displays "Desktop effects could not be enabled". As I mentioned before, Compiz was running fine and I had no issues with the visual effects prior to the last update perfomed a week ago. Can you help me please?? If you need further information I'll be more than glad to provide them tou you, this is driving me nuts!

Ubuntu :: Shell Permanently Integrated On The Desktop?

Jun 4, 2010

permanently open BASH Shell open, on the side of the GUI. This would mean re-sizing the GUI... You would basically have a divider between the shell, and the GUI, so that you could resize either, depending on which you were working with more. For some programs, which open a new shell (aeroscript for example), that stays open behind the GUI, or has an ASCII "GUI", the program would simply open in a tab of the shell. The main shell would be dynamic; meaning that whenever you selected a new window in your GUI, the shell would automatically cd to that directory, in order to save some time. This would be especially useful when editing many files at once with a text editor such as Nano or VI. Alternatively, there could be a different shell tab open for each session of the file explorer. This however, could get quite cluttered. It's still a pretty raw idea. I did some Googling, and so far haven't come up with any similar ideas or actualities." This should also have options as to which shell you would like to install with it (BASH, KSH, ZSH, etc.)

Ubuntu :: Desktop Effects Could Not Be Enabled

Apr 30, 2010

I've just completed a successful clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (32 bit).Out of the box, Desktop effects worked flawlessly. However, after installing the Ati driver from the Hardware Drivers utility, when I try to enable Normal desktop effects (Instead of None) I get a message saying "Desktop Effects Could Not Be Enabled". The Hardware Drivers utility says "Driver is installed and currently in use"

Installing and running glxgears from a terminal gives the error: "Segmentation Fault".The hardware in question is an Ati Radeon 4xxx series (I think it's a 4800 but can't remember exactly)

Ubuntu :: Desktop Effects Do Not Enable ?

Jul 24, 2010

I click 'Enable' on the dekstop effects. Usually, nothing will pop up at all. Sometimes, the 'Keep Settings' thing will turn on, upon seeing I click it to keep the new settings. I turn the appearance page back on, and it says there are no effects enabled. I want to enable normal effects.

I had an old version of Ubuntu for almost half a year before updating to Lucid Lynx. I recently wiped the new version of ubuntu accidentally (lucid lynx) while playing around with it, but before I wiped it I had graphics driver and effects enabled no problem. Emerald and transparency worked, etc. I did the exact same steps this time that I did on my last install of Ubuntu- and now it won't work.

I have compiz installed but it won't enable effects either. My graphics card is a Nvidia GE Force MX, i think.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Cannot Enable Desktop Effects

Oct 11, 2010

I have a Nvidia Geforce 8400GS card installed. I just reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 on my computer, everything works but I can't enable desktop effects. I tried using the generic drivers in synaptic nothing. Tired the restricted drivers, (both of them) the system runs smoother, but still can't enable desktop effects.

I tried upgrading to 10. And after the upgrade and restart I just got a black screen. I couldn't even access the terminal So I went back to 9.10. I ran the compiz-checker script. And it spit back:
"More than one graphics chip detected -- sorry, the script can not handle that. Aborting."
Which lead me to believe the onboard card was still enabled. Unfortunately I can't disable it in bios as my bios doesn't have that option.

Under System Settings -> Desktop Effects, I can only see grey'd out options, which won't let me enable desktop effects.

I saw a thread suggesting I run compiz from the command line and check the output. But when I do that it works fine and gives no errors.
