Ubuntu :: Shell Permanently Integrated On The Desktop?

Jun 4, 2010

permanently open BASH Shell open, on the side of the GUI. This would mean re-sizing the GUI... You would basically have a divider between the shell, and the GUI, so that you could resize either, depending on which you were working with more. For some programs, which open a new shell (aeroscript for example), that stays open behind the GUI, or has an ASCII "GUI", the program would simply open in a tab of the shell. The main shell would be dynamic; meaning that whenever you selected a new window in your GUI, the shell would automatically cd to that directory, in order to save some time. This would be especially useful when editing many files at once with a text editor such as Nano or VI. Alternatively, there could be a different shell tab open for each session of the file explorer. This however, could get quite cluttered. It's still a pretty raw idea. I did some Googling, and so far haven't come up with any similar ideas or actualities." This should also have options as to which shell you would like to install with it (BASH, KSH, ZSH, etc.)

Ubuntu :: Permanently Keep Colored Shell Prompt?

Nov 3, 2010

After I succesfully instaled ubuntu 10.04 server, I applied

export PC1="[e[36;1m]u@[e[31;1m]h:w$ [e[32m"

and my prompt was nice and colorfull. But, when I make logout and login, my prompt appears all green ([e[32m.) After restart, nevertheless, it looses color settings (of course) and appears plain white.

What should I do in order to keep my prompt color settings permanently?

Ubuntu :: Activate Desktop Effects With Integrated Intel Card

Apr 8, 2011

I have Ubuntu Natty installed on my computer, and I cannot activate the desktop effects and animations. I know that they can be activated, as I used them on Gutsy, but they have somehow been disabled during an update. I want to reactivate them, but every time I try I am told that they cannot be activated because the right graphic card drivers are missing. I have an integrated Intel card on my computer. Is there any way I can reactivate the visual effects? If not, how was I able to activate them in Gutsy?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Intel Integrated Video In Maverick - Can't Enable Desktop Effects

Oct 17, 2010

I am fairly new to Ubuntu, so I'm sorry if I don't include any necessary information. Installed 10.10 rc from CD about 3 days prior to official release and everything was working fine... went about installing software and setting up laptop for use. About one week later, got prompted for upgrade and went ahead through update manager. Now can't enable desktop effects. Right after upgrade had a period where title bars of windows would not display... menus were present, but no title bars, no maximize/minimize/close buttons and no dragging windows to new locations on screen That has since resolved itself. Spent quite awhile searching forums, created xorg.conf at one point, later deleted it.

compiz-check says this:
Code:
./compiz-check

Ubuntu :: Replace Desktop With A GUI Shell?

Aug 13, 2010

I would like to configure my Ubuntu as to start Gnome without a Desktop; instead, I would like to have a graphical shell taking the whole screen, but keeping all the other functionalities of the GUI.

It doesn't really have to be Gnome - I would gladly take any GUI with the above-mentioned description that would open Firefox, Amaya and Calibre.

I am trying to save some memory with a feeble Acer Aspire One that is solely used for browsing the web (Firefox), editing webpages (Amaya), and creating .mobi files.

how to replace the Desktop with a shell or taking a different approach?

P.S.: I looked at the Ubuntu Netbook Remix and the soon-to-be-released Gnome Shell, but they are not what I am looking for!

Ubuntu :: No Desktop - Drop Into Shell At Boot

Oct 23, 2010

I have a laptop IBM R50e. A clean install using 10.04.1 has been done, and all updates have been loaded. At boot, the system does not start the desktop. It tries and drops into the shell. I have started the recovery boot, and tried failsafeX start, but it only returns into the shell.

The boot parameter i915.modeset=1 has been set. There are a number of issues with the Intel graphics card and 10.04, I have been through those without success.

The modeset makes it possible to start some graphical environmrnt using xinit or startx. startx starts gnome, but lot of functionality is missing, like the network applet. Additionally I notice that there is no file /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket, which my other laptop has when in gnome.

Started gdm when being in the graphical shell through xinit, gives the error message that /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket is missing.

Ubuntu :: Integrated Into A CMS, But Would Like To Build It Into Some Web Pages?

Jan 17, 2010

I know this is off Ubuntu topic, but, imo, Ubuntu is the best forum for answers on the internet.Anyone using one of these online editors ?I use it as integrated into a CMS, but would like to build it into some web pages - with sole purpose of EDITING MY WEBPAGES ONLINE. Kompozer is great, but has a mack truck hole that may never get filled and I find the (usage) simplicity of ckedit attractive.Problem is I am not able to grasp how to do it.The examples are gobbledeegook to me. I mean i try them, they work, but do not address how to integrate (maybe just over my head).Installation and usage is trivial, I just cannot grasp how (if possible) to integratethe editor INTO a webpage - better yet, direct it to a webpage.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Integrated USB Ports Not Working

Mar 2, 2011

The two integrated USB ports on a laptop of mine running Ubuntu 10.10 mysteriously stopped working a while back after some random updates. They still have power, and they are still recognized by the system, as per lsusb:
Code:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

But although the ports still power up any connected appliances, they won't actually function. Any mouse I've tried so far won't work, nor will any external USB drive mount when connected. I don't even know where to begin to look. I believe the problem arose after an update to the xorg server, but I'm not sure. I just updated the kernel to 2.6.35-27, but that didn't solve the problem.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 9.04 Jaunty - Integrated ATI Graphics

May 22, 2010

I have a desktop computer with integrated ATI graphics. Specs below and lspci log attached. I was running 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope until 1 week ago. Everything worked fine from the day I installed it. It's default driver worked fine and graphics requiring applications like Google Earth and Secret Maryo Chronicles (game) ran smoothly. Then about a week or so ago I did a clean install of Lucid on this PC. And now Secret Maryo Chronicles runs choppy and Google Earth doesn't run and display images smoothly. I could understand having problems like this if I were switching to Fedora or something but I'm still using the same distro (and both are recent versions).

Computer Specs:
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 integrated graphics with 256 MB RAM
Intel Pentium 4 clocked at 3.00 Ghz
2 GB RAM (.25 being used for graphics card)
500 GB Hard drive (355 for Ubuntu)
