This is an Xubuntu install on a memory stick. I had the video working perfectly after the initial installation of Xubuntu. After I ran the updates and rebooted the system I had no video. It says ,"Server is already active for display 0, if the server is no longer running remove /tmp/.XO-lock and startup again"I looked around for a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but it does not exist. What next?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi'm running fluxbox on my xubuntu 10.10. I'm just trying to set up the key file and the keys i enter will randomly not bind. Like for example:

terminal, fbrun and notepad works fine but not thunar. i've tried a million different combos of keys and modifiers and it seems totally random weather it works or not. sometimes what works one minute don't after next reconfigure.

I get similar outputs when i change the keys-file for other numbers too but it doesn't seem to happen for every key that doesn't work.

Does anyone know how I can get xubuntu to boot up using the glint video driver instead of vesa? I am trying to get it loaded on an older machine and a previous version of ubuntu worked using the glint driver but the latest version of xubuntu (10.04) is using the vesa driver. Which is not working for me. I have tried ubuntu, xubuntu and lubuntu all version 10.04 and neither of them has worked. They all boot up into a terminal window (no GUI).
I tried creating an xorg.conf file and added a line specifying the glint driver. After doing that and trying to startxfce4 I get an error saying that it cannot load the glint module. Unfortunately that machine has no internet connection either. I guess it hasn't recognized my wireless card either.
i am having trouble installing xubuntu 10.04 with my evga geforce 6200 video card. My motherboard has the onboard intel 845g? card. The computer will not read the live cd with the video card installed. it hangs on the splash screen right after choosing " try without installing" i have tried nomodeset but that dose not help. I have no problems installing with the video card removed. My computer i a hp pavilion a647c.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having strange problems with my server/media center setup lately: The movie just stops in XBMC, as if it had reached the end, randomly, some times only once in a movie, sometimes every 5 min. Then, I have to rewind all the way to where I was to resume the movie.
I'll explain my setup:
Server with Ubuntu Server 8.04 with samba/lighttpd/proftpd/etc. which contains all the media (192.168.0.104)
-10meters cable->
dlink di-634 router (192.168.0.1) -> internet
-30meters cable->
dlink di-624+ router (192.168.10.1)
-10meters cable->
Media PC which runs Xubuntu 8.10 (due to massive slowdown with the integrated intel gpu in 9.04) running XBMC 9.04. (192.168.10.102)
I use samba to serve the videos to the media center. I have considered putting them all into the hdd of the media center, but then I would have to put more HD's into it, and that would cause cooling issues due to the case being very small. Having a server has proven quite useful too. The movies I'm watching are in 480p or smaller resolution. First, my routers were in opposite positions. But the di-624+ couldn't take all the traffic going through it anymore after a couple of additional laptops were added to the network, and started rebooting frequently. I thought this was the reason for the stopping, so I decided to switch places (the DI-634 is more stable and also has much better wireless range, being newer and having dual antennas). After doing this, the same thing still happens, and looking at the routers' logs, they don't say anything about rebooting (also I was connected to IRC all the time, no disconnects there either).
Then, I figured my server was running out of RAM or something similiar, but I ruled that out after checking it (it only uses about 10% RAM, processor loads stay at about 1 all the time. I probably forgot to mention this, but this setup used to work 100% before. I haven't changed anything, besides updating both machines with apt-get update & upgrade.
I was following the link below on my Acer trying to get my FN brightness adjust keys to actually work, instead of just showing the dialog. [url].... After following the steps and restarting, i can hear ubuntu start and the login screen appear, but i cannot see anything. Brightness keys do not work. So i hold my left shift to get the boot menu. Neither the primary boot or it's recovery method work (Kernel 2.6.35-28-generic). However if i choose 2.6.35-27-generic it boots right up like nothing is wrong. So how do i get my primary kernel working right again?

Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

When they didn't work, I madly attempted to uninstall, reinstall, different drivers and configuration files following advice posted on forums. There were many, many installs and restarts during this process, causing a variety of problems and errors. Currently, I have purged all the nvidia drivers except the nvidia-current ones with the xorg.conf file generated by running nvidia-xconfig.
Current problems: Boot process gets to purple Ubuntu screen with 5 changing dots beneath, but hangs there forever. Pressing esc reveals that the boot process gets to "checking battery state [ok]", but fails to load the login screen. Pressing ctrl-alt F1 allows me to log-in and startx successfully starts Xorg with the proper Nvidia drivers.Question:How can I fix things so that the system does not hang at the Ubuntu loading screen? Or, how can I diagnose what is causing the error?I suspect there may be a problem with the xorg.conf file that's being generated by nvidia-xconfig. Please take a look:

It's seems not really a problem with firefox itself, because some other programs can't be started as well. Such as eclipse or Googles ChromeIt's appears only for few secounds the program in the task bar, and disappears then. Recently, after some updates were installed, the server hangs when trying to start the gui (its set to run level 5)to get into the login screen. I can boot into run level 3 but get the same issue when I startx. CTRL-ALT-BackSpace doesn't return me to the command prompt. I get a blank screen with two letters and a blinking cursor. Which direction or log files to look at to start the troubleshooting.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI once had rock solid systems running opensuse. The hardware hasn't changed, but the system certainly has. The last time I could describe my systems as rock solid, was before the more or less forced move to KDE4. They've been anything but solid since, and it seems the more updates, the more things that get broken. I have two systems involved (a third is my server, so far unaffected). I have a desktop system that I built (4 years ago) on an Asus motherboard using an Nvidia chipset. The second is a laptop, a Lenovo T500 with both ATI and Intel graphics.
First, the upgrade to 11.4 broke the ATI video on the laptop. Tried everything, the proprietary ATI driver as well as the radeon driver. Learned online about adding the 'nomodeset' option, which got the video to work...if I could put up with random freezes, jerky video, and a desktop that refreshed in waves. Broken. Period. Gave up, switched the system one last time to the Intel graphics and never looked back. The ATI graphics on that laptop is unusable. Fortunately, I had the option of Intel or the laptop would still be unusable to me.
On the other hand, the upgrade to 11.4 on my desktop system running nvidia graphics went without a hitch. I was even pondering the idea of seeing if I could swap out the ATI graphics on the laptop for an Nvidia board. Then came this weekend's updates, which broke the Nvidia drivers. Yes, it would still boot up to a desktop, but I had a black desktop background and all of the configuration windows I opened came up completely black. Spent a couple of hours removing/reinstalling drivers. Uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and reinstalled.
Switched to the open source drivers. After numerous attempts, with the system unable to boot to X at all at points, I finally achieved an apparently functioning system with the nouveau driver. If the objective of the developers involved is to drive people away from linux and/or render opensuse unusable, well, they are doing a wonderful job. If I were not the technically inclined individual I am, I would have had no choice with either of these cases but to abandon the operating system for something else. It's ridiculous and counterproductive.
In OpenSuSE 11.2 YaST -> Online Update Configuration I can configure how often the system should check for updates (i.e. daily, weekly). Does this operate independently from the Online Update Applet(kupdateapplet)? The reason I ask is that the Applet doesn't always seem to work correctly. However, if the system will check for online updates automatically regardless of the Applet, perhaps this isn't an issue. If I can avoid messing with the Applet, that would be great.

i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.

I have one laptop connected to my tv. It has all the videos on it. ther laptop(actually a netbook) that I have set up to do light browsing on. Both are running ubuntu 9.10. I would to be able to remotely control vlc running on the laptop connected to the tv from the netbook. I have been searching for a while and have found hints that this is possible, but everything either refers to streaming from one machine to another or doesn't give enough examples to figure it out. I have tried enabling the http interface, but I can't access this from another computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm seeing regular stuttering in PAL video when running at the default 1920x1080 50Hz but not apparent when I use nvidia-settings to switch output to 60Hz. It's most noticeable when the video pans and you can see the video stutter ever half second or so.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 running Windows 7 64bits and Ubuntu 10.04 64bits. My problem is that when I'm connected to my wireless router the connection crashes when I watch a live stream video such ..... or something else. It does not happen when I'm connected via cable to the router nor in Windows 7 when I'm connected via wifi.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 3000, with a Pentium 4 2.8GHz, currently 512mb ram(thinking of upgrading to 2gb), and integrated graphics.
