Ubuntu :: Nautilus-clamscan Doc Items Identified As Viruses
Jul 14, 2010
I found today that ClamTK identifies items in /usr/share/doc/nautilus-clamscan/examples folder as possible viruses. The four files in question, "clam.exe, clam.cab, clam.exe.bz2, and clam.zip" are all part of the standard file list in packages.ubuntu.com. None are marked as executable, but are identified as binary files by less. Any ideas why these files are here or what they do, besides generate false warnings?

I decided to check out nautilus-clamscan, in which all it does is add an option to scan the selected file or folder for viruses in the context menu, and while it works fine for some things highlighted, for some that I've randomly tried it freezes, and won't complete scanning. using the usual method of scanning for viruses through Clamtk, it scans those files and folders just fine, so it's not those themselves that's causing the freezing.

I've been using Ubuntu for quite some time now and my context menu has become cluttered with a lot of applications that I don't use or menu items that I have never used - and most likely won't use.
So I want to remove them, or at least disable them.
So, after searching Google (irrelevant or old results) so then I tried Google with [URL] but nobody has had their problem solved.
Edit: I've looked through GConf-Editor, found nothing, and have looked through the directories .Cache/.Config/.Local/.Nautilus in my home diretory and nothing came up of relevance in the first three and the .Nautilus directory was empty.

I uninstalled xmms player quite a long time ago. I think when I had hardy heron. Currently I'm on 10.04. When I right click a .mp3 file I still have the option to play with xmms player showing up. Even if I choose an "other application" the xmms player option remains stickied to the top.Does anyone know how I can remove this entry? I did a lot of searching but couldn't find a solution.

Is it possible to somehow open Nautilus file manager, or favorites, or places items using hotkey(s)? Simply going to the launcher just to open the file manager is annoying, and I'd really find it convenient to somehow launch the Nautilus using hotkey(s)

I have a "Storage" partition in my hard drive which I have labeled as such and added to fstab. This is my fstab file:
[Code]...
The problem is that when I open up nautilus and click the Computer icon in the toolbar (which gives the fake computer:/// address) I see two items referring to my Storage partition:
* Storage (which appears to be of "unknown type" in the properties).
* 500 GB Hard Disk: Storage (which is the one that works).

Why Ubuntu would not be able to read an ISO that windows xp is fine with? I find that it's usually the other way around. This has occurred with 3 different ISO's. Gmount and K3b don't like em at all.

During the installation of Ubuntu 10.04 the partitioner was wrongfully configured to see a functioning btrfs partition as ext4 (without reformatting it). Thus the installation process got stuck at 5%.Installer was run again ignoring the btrfs partition.btrfs-tools was added to the new 10.04, but the btrfs partition is now recognized ast4 with lost+found folder on it.Tried to add the btrfs to etc/fstab as btrfs but t won't mount. Can the partition/filesystem type be changed so that this is actually recognized and mounted as btrfs, hoping my data is still on it somehow?

I just found out that I did mistake.I transfer 1 file into the Ubuntu Linux, but that File has a strange character. Take a look at the picture screenshot taken.free image hostingExplanation: 1) The file name is unknown, take a look at the WinRAR Archive (left window)2) The file name recognized in Ubuntu without any name, thus it appeared as Empty (right window: putty program). And via Command Line Interface, it appeared as Question Marks.

I booted Debian in Live mode on a USB to try to see if the internet will work on my Linux machine before I actually install it (there is some tricky internet software where I live that I must overcome, but that will come in another thread).
Currently I have no WiFi whatsoever. When I go into the internet access menu I only get back the fact that there is a wired connection that's possible (theoretically, I should be able to also see networks to which I can connect to, but I don't). Also, it's impossible for me to actually get a wired connection going, unless I can somehow give it through my Windows laptop.
When I did some research, the people seem to say that I need to update the driver after enabling the use of non-free software; I can't do that since I have no connection in the first place.
The OS recognizes that the PCE exists (I am using asus pce-ac68), when I did "lspci" command it told me I have BCM4360 and BCM43225 chips.
I think I found the drivers here "[URL] ......" but I don't think my chip is listed there (there is no BCM4360 or BCM43225 on that list). What to do with those drivers, I mean how to compile them and install them on a Debian machine, and I'm not sure I can even install them on a live boot (but I want to make sure my internet works on the live boot before I actually install the OS).

I am running lenny on my PC ( amd 64 / nvidia graphic ) without any problems. Since last week I tried to change to squeeze - without success. First step - update from lenny to squeeze accordingly to the upgrade description from the Debian homepage. After nearly 2 hours without any error message - Result : System dosen't boot after upgrade.
So I went back to lenny and tried the second step to get Squeeze working. I got the DVD "Debian-6.0.0-amd" and started the installation. After the second screen the keyboard is no longer identified and I cannot go on with the installation.

Using Slackware 13.0. Have a Microdia web cam (60fc) and was (still am) looking for a simple free application to test it. Found a site which identified the drivers, modules, etc. needed so was checking my messages file and noticed that the Image Sensor HV7131R is not always identified as being detected when booting: kernel: usb 1-1.3: HV7131R image sensor detected Is this a problem or what?
I found modules videodev, V4L2, but could not find compat_ioctl32 and it is not listed in the modules loaded. Is this correct? Could not "find" it. I see usbcore listed during booting but does this mean it is a module? or a driver? or what? Also cannot find the an appropriate module that is for either ehci_hcd or uhci_hcd related as both of these appear in the messages. Also I see that the camera is for SN9C105 bridge and know that the "sn9c105" is supposed to be included in "sn9c102" module(?) but the SN9C105 camera notation does not always appear in messages. Is this correct? or (I think) I am confused by the numbering and cases used, i.e. what is a module (loadable?) a bridge and why change cases? Can someone straighten me out? Are all modules loaded listed by lsmod or just the loadable ones and usbcore etc. are "modules" loaded at another time?

I have been given an old Canon BJC-4310SP printer. Performing the "built-in" test print works perfectly. Using the standard CUPS installation procedure (in Debian Lenny) also worked without a hitch. The new printer was correctly identified, CUPS suggested the appropriate driver and then installed and configured the printer as directed. But asking CUPS to print its test page crashed with the following message:
"Unable to open parallel port device file: Permission denied".

On one of my machines the DVD/DVDRW/CDROM drive appears as /dev/hdc and is not identified as an optical drive by HAL. It is owned by root: disk and thus no users get permission to read/write in the device (not even those in the cdrom group). This stops playing DVDs, ripping CDs, no notifications appear when a disk is inserted, etc. etc. When I set the permissions for all to read/write from the device then users can access but still no notifications are shown.
On all my other machines the optical drive is identified as /dev/sr0 and is owned by root:cdrom . All have Slack 13.1 . Previously with Slack 12.2 this machine still had the drive in /dev/hdc but the permissions were right (I think because I added it to /etc/fstab with options for users to access it). I believe the problem is down to HAL not setting this drive to the correct group, but how do I fix it? I hate HAL, it has a mind of its own, just like in the scifi movie

I've recently bought a Samsung R580 laptop. It is now configured as a dual boot system with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 (64bit). The wireless network functions correctly under Win7, but I have encountered problems with Ubuntu. The native drivers do not function and having identified the driver used by Win7 (net819xp.inf) that works, I have tried to install it using ndisgtk, but get the message "incorrect hardware". I have followed the ndiswrapper howto carefully without being able to get the wireless network going.

I've prepared a Samba fileserver at work without much too problems and I've prepared a batch file to mount it as z: letter on windows machine at startup. As a sad result the share gets filled with many viruses and became a vehicle of infection.
folder1 ----> folder2 and many other files and folders
folder1 has a condivision access read and write for everyone so I get no problems with passwords for all those who have access but i use ntfs security to do it read only (viruses act like if a pendrive is connected and mainly put infected files just in the "root" of it, in my case in folder 1) and then give everyone full control in folder2. I've been trying to understand how to do this but I'm quite new to linux and smb.conf really scared me. I've tried samba graphical tool which was a lot easier but I'm not able to achieve this kind of result: no need of user password for users to mount the share and no write possibilities in folder 1 and full control in folder 2.

Since it makes Windows apps work there is a possibility that also its viruses will work. I searched and a few sites mentioned such things, but none confirmed this issue.
In Wikipedia, it said this: "Because of Wine's ability to run Windows binary code, concerns have been raised over native Windows viruses and malware affecting Unix-like operating systems. Wine can run much malware, but programs running in Wine are confined to the current user's privileges, restricting some undesirable consequences. This is one reason Wine should never be run as the superuser."
Here is the link.
As far as I know, I cannot install unless I'm a root user, and I keep my Terminal as a root user opened for hours. Also, if I were to install windows apps under Wine, I'll have to log in as a root!
So let me line the questions here:
1- Does Wine activate Windows viruses?
2- Can viruses run on their own while I log in as root in Terminal or while installing apps (whether under Wine or not)?

I know Slackware probably doesn't require too much protection from viruses or spyware, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to help protect it (other than Common Sense).
I ask this for 2 reasons:
1. I'm Paranoid
2. Every now and then I mistype a website I go to and it takes me to a completely different website which frightens me because of my paranoia.
So is there anything I can do to help protect Slackware, and in the rare case I get a virus is there a way to remove it directly?
Is it also possible to use Slackware (currently Master drive) to remove a virus on Windows (slave drive)?
